Finally!! A 582!!
4 Attachment(s)
Well, when I decided (about the time that I joined this forum) that I wanted to increase my cub cadet fleet, I wanted a 582. (Or an 1806) Couldn't seem to find one. Well, actually I've wanted one since I was younger. We had a 782 and a 71 growing up, and I always thought that the 582 (a mix of both tractors) would be cool. So, after buying all I have in the last few months, I splurged again. I paid a little more than I normally do, and it needs some work (surprise, surprise) but I think I can handle it. :biggrin2: Carb issues and some locked up steering components. Overall, I'd rate the tractor about a 6 maybe a 7, on a 1-10 scale. Missing the side panels and needs a seat, or I'd give it an 8. (I'll be needing a set of side panels. Can't stand it!) This is to be my work tractor. Current plans are, deck is coming off, AG's on the back, tri-ribs on the front. Sleeve hitch (for now, Cat 0 later). Fix the motor and run it. A 582 was my "holy grail" tractor because I wanted to build a gear drive "worker", and with that frame I can put ANY engine IH or CC ever used in that frame...... especially a D600/D640 Kubota! :biggrin2::biggrin2: (Just have to find one.) She's a dirty pig, and going to get a bath tomorrow. Shows about 200 hrs on the clock, but I'd say it's really about 800. Doesn't seem to have been well used, just not really well maintained. :bash2: Got a pretty decent 44" deck. That was a bonus! Needs some of the dents beat out of it. Honestly I don't understand what people run into with these things to beat the front edge of the deck in so much. :BangPC: It's an EARLY MTD tractor SN#708091, which makes it an '81. This brings the fleet to 10! :beerchug:
Without further ado, the obligatory pics: Attachment 49592Attachment 49593 Attachment 49594Attachment 49595 |
Very nice Jonathan.:beer2:
|
Cool! :beerchug:
|
I was wondering when we'd get to see pics, nice 582! :beerchug:
|
That is awesome! Glad you finally got your ideal gt. So along with the smoker and cat 0 up grade, would a hydraulic pump with multiple hydraulics be up for review? Looking forward to seeing what you add to the tractor :beer2:
|
Thanks guys!
Yes, hydraulics will be added if/when I get a diesel. I don't think my perfectionism will let me add hydraulics till I get a diesel for it. I don't want to go to the trouble of mounting a pump, just to have to change it when I find a diesel. That project is a future one. I have 4 other tractors to complete first. My 682 decided that it is time for a float last night. Found the motor full of gas and the tank empty!!! :bash2: 185 is in the works, and the 1250DS and 1000 are awaiting rebuilding. So, the smoker will have to wait. :BlahBlah: For what it's worth, the 154 is in the shop so I can get it running and sold, and grandad's 71 is waiting for me to blast and paint it. |
Good looking project tractor. I also wonder what people run into to make the bends and dents one usually finds when buying. Sorry I could not be of more help on the one we talked about. Still have not found a town by that name in PA.

Welcome to the 582 club!!!
Sorry no green jacket... |
Thanks Paul! I don't know where that tractor resides either. Oh well, it had some issues, but the price sure was good! I'm happy with this find. Pictures really don't do the tractor justice. The paint is really in good shape for the age. It's 33 years old!!
Thanks Lew! I don't even get a jacket if I have 2 red ones? :bigthink: |
Congrats on the 582, Jonathan!
|
OK you get a red one instead.
I called the guy who was selling the 582. SOLD IT To far for me... |
Thanks Allen! :beerchug:
Good deal Lew! You have my address, so just send the jacket. My name is spelled JONATHAN. LOL! :biggrin2::biggrin2: Yeah, at that price he should have been able to sell it quick! |
Nice find. One thing these tractors make me wonder: Who drops $3-4k on a tractor and lets it sit outside and rot? For as much as these cost when new, I don't get how they can be in such poor shape sometimes. I'm glad you recued it, it is in a better place now!

Nice, Jonathan!
|
Congrats on the nice 582 Jonathan!:beerchug:
|
Thanks Nitro, Frank and Mike! I been walking around it all day here at the shop. I didn't schedule much this week cause I have a lot of little jobs that have piled up here and I want them out. Before the end of the day, I ordered a carb and fuel pump kit and new governor springs for it. Pulled the deck and subframe. This deck (over than the front edge that they PO apparently thought was a bulldozer) is in pretty good shape. Isn't rusted out, and as of yet, no cracks. I'll feel better when when I get a compression check ran on it. I think it may have a leaking intake valve.

Ditch that briggs and get yourself a mag 18 and be done with it...
Your Jacket is on the way Jooonnathoon Did I spell it wrongly:biggrin2: |

Spelling sounds right. :bigthink: That will look good.... should be able to read it if I hold my arms out to the sides. :biggrin2::biggrin2: |
That looks to be in great shape. Congrats!:beerchug:
|
:beerchug: Nice there Jonathan. That would be cool to put a smoker in a 582!
|
Thanks Todd and Eric!
It is in really good shape. We decided today that it has either had a rough 200 hrs, or an easy 800. What it really lacked was general maintenance. I don't know that it has seen a grease gun..... ever. I agree, a 582D is the best idea for a build! It will be legend......... wait for it......... ARY!! |
Nice find Jonathan! Looks to be in pretty nice shape from the pictures.
|
Pretty soon you will have the full lineup of cubs. Sorry to hear about the 682 float.

I'm pretty close to a full line up! 71, 125, 1250X2 (one for parts), 1000, 582, 682, 1811, 154 & 185 Lo-Boys. I'm feeling pretty good! Yeah, the float sticking sucked..... I had just changed the oil and only put about 2 hrs on it. Oh well. It happens. I ordered a carb kit and a new fuel pump for it. Not going to take any chances that it was the FP that did the leaking. I don't want to go through that again! That's one good thing about the old singles. If the float sticks, it just makes a puddle! We'll have it back up and going in no time flat! Plus, I now have the choice to run a 44" or a 50" deck on it. :beerchug: Thanks Ryan! It is probably the nicest one I've bought outside of my 1811.... but I bought it almost 15 years ago! It was a little newer.... :biggrin2: |
Well boys....... the bad news verdict is in. Compression check revealed a dead cylinder, right side. That was the side I thought was the issue, and TBH, I can't believe it runs. Dropped exhaust seat on it. I'll call my engine machinist and see if he can cut in a new seat without disassembling.... but I'm not hlding my breath. Sooooo..... may get to look for a diesel after all. :BangPC:

Jonathan, I almost feel guilty for buying this tractor for you! Seems it has major issues. Kinda wish I had never called you from the auction. At least you have a solid foundation for a 582 smoker.

Sorry to hear about the engine, Jonathan.
|
Thanks guys!
Don't feel bad Tim, I'm not upset with the deal. It's still a really nice tractor and worth fixing. It may be a blessing....... found a D600 Kubota on C-list. Trying to buy it now.... :HeeHee: |
Hope you get it Jonathan!:beerchug:
