Break from the 'Little IH'
1 Attachment(s)
Uncle Jonathan took a break from the little IH Cubs today and moved to the big ones for a bit. Of course the little guys, Brody and Reese had to go for a ride. Since the family farm was sold before they were born it is not often at all they get to ride the big ones. They had a blast!!!

Looks like the crew had a fun time in the big machine for a man's day with the tractor. Thanks for sharing the pic. Cub Cadet 123 |
:beerchug: Nice.

3588?
Never got to run a 2+2, weren't very many around here. I'd like to try one though. |
Nice pics Phil!:beer2:

I'm not sure who was having more fun. The boys or me?!
It's nice to get back in a big tractor for a while. Yes, 3588. I'm driving for my buddy Chris, and they love their 2+2's! That one is one of three! They also have a 6588 and a 6788, and then too many other tractors to list. A couple years ago we (my shop) rebuilt the motor in the 6788. Well, think I'll find me a cup of coffee, and I'm headed back to get behind the wheel! Happy cubbin boys! |

The little IH tractors are fun but the big ones are fun too. I have a place in my heart for both of them. I've always thought the 2+2 tractor designs were neat.
|
That's awesome. The 3588 has always been my favorite. I've put a lot of hours on one as well and now my son is racking up the hours too, lol. Great job Jon and Phil, they will always remember that time, looks fun. Long live articulating tractors!

I've got that same 3588 toy....got it for Christmas about '79-80. Was an awesome find under the Christmas tree for a little guy! I still have it, but it should get restored.
I miss my old farm days. Used to work for my Uncles, between the 3 of them there's 3 806s, 1206, 1466, 1566, 1086, 5288 and a 7110 Magnum. They had a 1066, 1256, & Deere 8430 4x4. Spent a lot of hours in them. Back in '09 when everything was crashing my dealer was one of the stores Chrysler dropped. Fortunately an old friend from high school (who has a huge farm out here with his Dad) had a guy leave right when I needed work. Thankfully he put me on for a few months.....I got to drive some NICE green hardware- 9400, a couple 9420s, even a new 8345R. They had a couple year old, I think 525hp Cat Challenger burn up. There was a few fires out here that year. They were almost exclusively green until they tried the Challengers, and then had an issue with a couple 9860 combines and switched to Lexions. I haven't spoke to them in a while but drove by there the other night and saw a near new red Steiger in the shed. H@ll must have froze over 'cuz I never thought they'd have anything red. |

My bad:Forgot: I forgot about the 3rd one. I knew that. |
Neat pics Jonathan. I spent the last couple days drilling beans with my dad's 3650 MF. It's nice to get behind the wheel of a full-size tractor even if it's not an IH. He does have 2 IH tractors. A 1586 and 674 utility. I chisel plowed with the 1586 a couple weeks ago.

All these pics, are in different tractors! Busy weekend! :beerchug: Running the 3588 2+2 no till drilling in rye. Believe it or not, there is a marker track running right in front center of my hood. The rye was thick, and about 5' high! Attachment 52052 View out the front of a 7350 FWA CIH Magnum. Attachment 52053 Me and my girl. (7350 Magnum) Attachment 52054 Me and my kids! Jon
Looks like you had to go back to your day job to get a break. :biggrin2: I do have to admit that I do envy you getting to run the big stuff. I used to find operating my 980C's very relaxing. |

Back during my (somewhat) mis-spent youth and early adulthood, I ran 1066, 1466 and the Big Dog of the time, a 4166.
The 4166 was used to pull a HUGE sub-soiler. Sort of very vaguely remember that the 10 or 12 rippers made that thing about 3 feet high. I think it was a "Taylor-Way". I don't think IH made such a beast back then. My favorite combo was a 1066 with a 480 disk hooked on. Next favorite was the 1466 with the very large 45 Vibra-Shank field cultivator. Thanks for the pix and great memories, guys. P.S. Pretty lady and great looking children, Jonathan. |
I used to work for an IH dealer but switched to the green side just over a year ago. I really liked working on the equipment but just got tiered on the management. Now I am the main forage harvester technician. I must say it is fun working on them. The harvesters are real easy to work on once you get used to them. I don't get out to the field hardly at all anymore. So I work on all the fun stuff but don't get to run it.

I'm sorry to hear you now work for "the dark side". LOL! (No really, I'm sorry.) |
Great pictures Jonathan:beerchug: Kinda cushy operators station compared to what I used to have to work with:bigthink: 856 with ROPS for all of the tillage and a Farmall Super C for cultivating acres and acres of corn, two rows at a time:Snooze:
Gives one a lot of time to think:biggrin2: thing is it seemed like I just got done with the first round of cultivating and we took the shields off for round two:banned: |

Yeah, I put my time in on those tractors too. Growing up, we ran (all IH) a 340, 856 and a 1066. No cab on any. Granddad decided that he wanted to have an organic farm (no chemical) so we started rotary hoeing 3 days after we planted. Did that until it was too big to hoe, then started cultivating. 6 row equipment, 500 acres. (Small farm. Not all the ground was organic. Only about 250-300 acres) Cultivated till canopy. So, we set the shovels really close to the row. 2-3mph, 4"-6" apart on the row shovels. You got REALLY good at not taking out the crop. (It's hard BTW. No guidance system.) So, yeah. BTDT too. :High5: Our old 856 had about 11,000 hrs on it when we got rid of it. (It's actually in my shop now, because my friend Chris bought it.) Out of those hours, I estimate that I probably put 3,000 of them on. It only had about 3,000 hrs on it when I started helping. (It also had a lot of PTO time running things like a gen set, or a manure pump) |
