582 not so quick fix up

2 Attachment(s)
Fixing up a 582 for the older guy down the road from me. He is sort of a junk tractor collector. Only one that runs is this 582. He has a 44c for a deck and he has a snow plow for it but he didn't have a mule or the lift carriage for the deck. Shrewcub donated the mule and carriage, Big Thanks Buddy. Clutch and brake need some adjustment. Has a nice mouse nest on the top of the engine. Gotta give a good clean up, change the fluids all the standard stuff and get the deck on it for the guy. He's 83 and has been cutting his grass with an electric weed eater. Big thanks to Cub123 for helping me get it all loaded up yesterday after he stopped by to pick up some belt covers for his O deck.

Looks good Sam , can't wait to see your progress.:beerchug:

Looks to be well kept Sam, be prepared to see a few other issues with the clutch, though...

Looks like a nice early built CCC 582. Good job Sam on helping the man repair his tractor.:beerchug:

Clue me in Lew. I'm not looking to get into a serious rebuild.

Darrell 06-06-2014 09:11 AM

Sam , I think what Lew is talking about is that just about all Cubs with a clutch usually need to be taken apart and parts replaced or something fixed.

Maybe you will get lucky !!!

ACecil 06-06-2014 11:14 AM

That's awesome, Sam! When you're done, he'll be able to enjoy his 582!

Cubcrazy 06-06-2014 02:20 PM

Not a bad looking 582 Sam! You don't see the yellow/white ones very often.

You will have it in tip top shape in no time!

Well the disk has seen better days but I think it will last the summer. I showed the owner so he knows it's tired.

When I'm 83 I want Nick to fix my Cubs also. :biggrin2:

Just a random question; why does it only have one tire chain on it? :biggrin2:

Good looking machine, and double good on you for helping out a friend :beerchug:

Well this thing is rapidly turning into the Cub from hell. It has a dead hole in the engine. Gotta see what the owner wants to do with it. Looks like it has an issue with an intake valve. Will know more after I pull the head. Why do I get myself involved in these messes is beyond me. If I was even 1/2 way smart I would stay away. Cocktail hour so don't bother me, talk to you guys tomorrow. :bash2::bash2::bash2::bash2::bash2::bash2::bash2:

No idea why it only had 1 tire chain on it. Also found the kill wire had been eaten by the mice. Just shoot me now. If this was my tractor I'd have the cutting torch out and fired up.

darkminion_17 06-06-2014 09:32 PM

Sam,
Mice see the yellow and think "cheese"

sent you an email about the briggs manual

Lew you are the best, I don't care what Nick say's. :biggrin2:

Mice seem to like B&S stuff the most. Gotta post a pic of the wire I took out of this thing. The nest is in my shop vac. At least it was not in the blower shroud, pulled the tins and all good inside.

darkminion_17 06-06-2014 09:51 PM

I would have sent you the book, but a pdf will work.

I had one of those 16 briggs that the valve spring seat had eaten into the alum block. The lash was alright and still functioned. Mike

Got the old turd running. Bad head gasket, but the engine is pretty well used up as is the clutch. Had to re-build his "Good deck" Yeah love it when someone leaves the spacer between the spindle bearings out. Sharpened the blades put them back on and couldn't turn the spindle, seals were in upside down, idler pulley seized up solid and on and on and on. It runs, it cuts grass. I did what I told him I would do. Big thanks to all of you that have helped in this project. Give yourselves a pat on the back.

TIMCRUTCHER 06-07-2014 07:02 PM

I put the bottom spindle seal in backwards so that if it is over greased it does not blw the seal. Dealer told me to do that.

Yep, one of them needs to be in backwards to allow the old grease to be pushed out. This had both facing in. :bash2:

Some people should not be allowed to use tools. :biggrin2:

Forgot to post the pic of the wire the mice had eaten so here it is.
