Moles

OK guys what is the hot setup for getting rid of moles. :bigthink:

tservice 06-21-2014 08:55 AM

Either two shovels, one to trap then from running the other to pop them out of the ground and hit them with it. Or kill their food supply, grubs.

Shrewcub 06-21-2014 09:07 AM

I haven't tried it myself, but it sure looks fun! :biggrin2:

We have them also, Sam. He got the yard good this week.

Well that is entertaining but just a bit pricy

Local farm supply claims to have some kind of worm that they sell that is poisonous to moles, have any of you ever heard anything about this?

red56turbo 06-21-2014 12:24 PM

Call Bill Murray from Caddyshack. Oh wait, that was a funny looking groundhog. :bash2: :biggrin2:

You need to borrow my parent's dog, Sam. He's a Black Lab mix. He'll lay out by active mole runs and listen, for hours at a time. Next thing you know, he's digging a hole and pulling out a mole. He averages roughly 40-50 moles a year. Kinda slowing down in his old age, though.

I haven't heard about the worms. I am curious too :bigthink:

I have pondered making my own rodenator. I have O2, propane, and an old grill igniter. Just need a little spare time to fab something up.:biggrin2:

They are chasing after the grubs. Get rid of them, they'll leave. I've heard that Preen works, but any insecticide should get rid of them. I'm not sure who to recommend talking to. If I was looking for granular insecticide, I'd go to the local Farm Service, (FS, but I don't know if they are in your area). Local farmer, anyone who deals in agricultural chemicals. If your lucky, you won't need a chemical license to purchase. If you do, get a farmer to buy it for you. Or, maybe a local turf/lawn care specialist. Local golf coarse greens manager too. :bigthink:

used to have them all the time got some insecticide the killed the grubs and they left ... funny thing the neighbors yard got infested :ROTF2:

I have also heard that if you get rid of the grubs then the moles will leave.

I have also heard of dogs that will track them down and dig them up. I think if a fella had a dog that would do that, you could almost make a living with him.

Never heard of "poisonous worms" before...

Does anyone have a Product or Brand name for the insecticide that kills the grubs?

kostendorf 06-22-2014 09:23 AM

Problem with insecticides is they are not discriminate on what they kill. I like to see frogs, toads, lightning bugs and so on. Insecticides screw up the food chain that ultimately comes back to us.

Diazinon.

I was told years ago this would kill the grubs and the moles would go away. I've had a jug for years and never used it.

Oak 06-22-2014 08:45 PM

Use milky spore to kill the grubs. Google it. I think it gets kinda pricey for the coverage I need.:bash2:

nikster 06-26-2014 11:11 AM

Here's what I used 2 yrs. ago. Hose end sprayer & grubs gone.

I agree with this statement , i do not like using pesticides/insecticides/chemicals. We have enough chemicals in our enviroment already.

I had a mole problem also and when doing some research , i went with mole traps. I can't remember the name brand , but they are everywhere. You place them in the mole run and they are a spring loaded mole piercing death trap.

I put two traps out and caught six moles within a week !!

Preen is an herbicide. Just saying.

Shotgun Wedding 06-27-2014 04:05 PM

Insecticide use for grubs at this time of year is not particularly effective on grubs due to the fact they have left their active larval stage of their life cycle and are either pupated or already out of pupal stage and are full adults. Adults don't eat, so insecticides are not very effective.

You need to wait until late summer early fall for the eggs to hatch for them to be actively eating your grass roots, then an insecticide is quite effective as they consume it and die.

But I think any non chemical approach is best, especially mechanical traps etc.

My biggest problem with grubs are the skunks that come in the fall. With 2 dogs it seemed one or both would get nailed. Those skunks just root up the lawn getting those grubs. So for 2 years now I've been taking care of the grubs & they go else where to feed.:beerchug:

If you are talking about people who infiltrate intelligence, then there are certain methods that are used by our gov. or you can use the mafia. If you are talking about the rodents, then my dad used to place a chair in the yard and sit and wait with a spade shovel. Sometimes he would wait by the hour, but what the heck--he had nothing else to do. We called it the "mole patrol". It was a very effective technique because he got 100% of them, just not very efficient.

Went with the Spectracide Triazicide granules and then back bladed the area with the Kubota BX. If I get just a little more PO'd I'm gonna take the tiller to the area and grind up the boogers. :biggrin2:
