Would you pay $3,500 for a 100 hr 2182?

A friend called me about a 2182 (Kubota gas) tractor with 100 hours on it. Sounded questionable but ended up being true. Went over and looked at it, found that it has been sitting for close to 15 years in a garage. It has a 50" deck, two flat front tires, gas has turned to varnish, battery is junk and needs a good cleaning as it is covered with dust . Owner says he will get it cleaned up and running but wont take less than $3,500.00. He bought it new and paid over $7,000.00 for it.

:bigthink:

Question being, would you pay $3,500.00 for a true 100 hour 2182 w/ 50" deck that will be in excellent condition? There was a nicely restored one that sold for $2,600.00 recently listed here. I want it, but can't pull the trigger!

I have just added pictures!

No, I forsee leaky hydraulics if it sat long enough to varnish the gas. The rear is probably got a milkshake going on inside. A lot of damage can happen in 100 hours in the wrong hands. I would not go over $2k.

All depends on what condition it's in. If it had been properly stored maybe but if it was just parked to rot then no. My guess is it will be a leaker if he can even get it running. I'd be worried about the inside of the engine probably has a lot of condensation caused rust. Same issue in the trans. I'd expect any of the gears or bearings above the oil level are rusted. Seals dry rotted. Sad but it is what it is. Any chance of getting pics?

I will let the experts weigh in with the details, but my experience has been that equipment that just 'sits' for a long time is problematic. They need to be used at least some.

Friend of mine had a few old cars. He rotated running them, taking turns to be sure each one was driven at least semi-regularly. It was a lot of work, and there were always surprises on something needing fixed.

I think that is too much. I'd look for one that may have more hours on it but has been run and maintained mechanically for less money than he is asking. They can be found if you are patient. Like this one:

Cosmetic issues can be fixed for a lot less money than engine / hydro issues.

And hour meters can quit or be disconnected.

If you want one that's had all to need to do stuff already done you can have this one for $3000.00

I'd say that's a good deal! :biggrin2:

I agree with everyone else. When stuff sits and isn't "put to bed" correctly, things rust and dry out. The seals will dry out and could leak. Fuel system would need cleaned. If the front tires have been flat, they are prolly shot. Not saying these aren't easy fixes, except seals, but would make it not worth $3500, IMHO. Three point and rear PTO on the back? If not, sounds like more of a $2000 tractor??? Good luck and keep us posted if ya get it. :beerchug:

For every reason listed above (dry seals, rusty internals, gelled fluids, rusted/dried bearings, etc) I would pass. I'm sorry, but a plain jane Super (even in good condition) isn't worth $3,500 anymore, not without options like 3 point, rear PTO, blade, or blower, etc. That's just my opinion, I'm not trying to offend anyone. Supers are GREAT machines, and well worth investing in, I just don't think they are worth $3500 after sitting for 15 years. :beerchug:

Here are pictures of the 2182. He has now taken it in to a local dealer to get running so I went there and snapped these pictures.

Sam's would be a better buy. The other has sat too long.

Sam Mac 07-25-2014 08:46 PM

Wonder what happened to the exhaust tip on the muffler. Not sure I'd trust the hour meter on this one.

red56turbo 07-25-2014 09:30 PM

Boy,
Taking it to the dealer is gonna cost him some $$. I'm with Sam. Hard time believing the hours. I've seen quite a few hour meters not working. I hope for your sake the hours are correct. But I still feel $3500 is high. Good luck and keep us posted.

There's just to many thing that could go wrong on a tractor that been sitting that long, it just sounds like it will start nickel and diming you and pretty soon the $3500 tractor turns into a $4500 tractor

Shaner 07-25-2014 09:40 PM

My mothers 1440 the hour meter quit at 49 hours. That super looks in good shape...but I doubt it has 100 hours. More like 500-700

And I just bought this for $600; needs trunnion springs and washed up, that's about it. This just proves the point that prices are all over the place. OP; in all honesty, you could get luck, buy it, and have zero problems with it. But, and more likely, you could buy it and have seals start leaking, bearings go out, yada yada yada. For the price, it's not worth it. If it was cheaper, we'd all change out tune. But as things are, it'd be best to steer clear. :beerchug:

If that is an accurate assessment of the tractor, it would be worth it. Where else can you buy a like new $7000 tractor for half price. If you're fairly young, that tractor will still outlast you.

It's a shame you didn't get too it before the tractor got to the dealer. The dealer is probably going to hit him for a bundle to get it in shape.

ccpullin 07-26-2014 08:08 AM

Thanks Everyone!

I was hoping this was going to turn in to a "Barn Find" but I'm now thinking he just thinks it's worth half of new because of the 100 hours on it. I think the hour meter is right inspecting condition of the deck, tires, side panels and a few other things that typically show wear. I can see the consensus is, it's too high. Maybe he will get some astronomical quote for repair then call me and offer it for less, but he sounded pretty firm thinking it needed a splash of gas and a wash. He told them to fix the front tires and give him a repair estimate. We'll just have to wait this one out now and see where it goes.

hahaha nooo, this was found in Illinois, down in Peoria to be exact. I did almost pick up a 2072 (I think that's what it was) in Iowa for something like $300, but it was a 4 hour drive each way and that's a bit much. I've done a 3 hour drive before but I knew what I was getting into. The 2072 left me with a lot of questions. Heck, the Super I just got is a 2 hour drive each way for me so I worked that into my deal when getting it; I had the guy I got it from go get it for me :biggrin2:
