Awesome job! Plan to use it, show it, or just stare at it?

ford4150 08-19-2014 06:59 PM

Putting a snow blade on it. In west Kentucky we might get a few inches a couple times a year. So, yes, mostly stare at it.

kostendorf 08-19-2014 07:03 PM

That's better than AWSOME, I'd have that baby sitting in my living room with new bed sheets to cover it.

jimbob200521 08-19-2014 07:22 PM

That's one I'd count as too nice to use, good job!! :beerchug:

Cub Cadet 123 08-19-2014 09:26 PM

In my neck of the woods, that would make a great Prom Mobile!!!:biggrin2: You did a wonderful job on your restoration. It would have been fun to have lived in that era to see the IH cubs that we enjoy, cleaned up and new on the showroom floor. Job well done! :IH Trusted Hand:

Man this build helped you and us all at the same time! Grip shift and rear lights need to be ordered :) Thank you for the great build and sharing with us all!!

Can't stop checking these pics out and wanted to pass a question along to the folks here. I see in your gas line your only using that small mesh filter that comes with the shut off valve. Is that good enough or should an inline filter be used in addition?

ford4150 08-20-2014 05:56 PM

In my case, the gas tank has been cleaned (acid wash), the petcock filter is new and I filter my gas as I fill the tank. Use a funnel and paint filter, same type filter I use for filling the suction cup on my paint sprayer. As a youth, I watched my grandfather filter gasoline for his tractor using my grandmother's discarded nylon stockings. I don't have access to anyone's stockings, so I use the paint filter.

Excellent my friend :) Did you use one of those tank lining fluids to re-line the inside of the tank? When you said acid wash, do you mean the inside to or what that the method you used to clean the outside?

ford4150 08-20-2014 07:19 PM

Muriatic acid on the inside, (be careful with this !), rinse. No tank coating inside. 'Citristrip' stripping gel on the outside, followed by green scotchbrite pad, self etching primer, Majic IH White with reducer and hardner, sprayed on.

IHinIN 08-20-2014 08:48 PM

What do you think of the Majic brand paint? I used it on my red 129 and was not crazy about it. It seems to take a long time to dry even with hardener.

I was going to ask that as well. It seems most that have used the majic use the spray bomb including myself in the past with the same complaint. Also was going to ask that it looks like the new CC yellow rather than the school bus yellow offered, can you verify that? Did you mix it 4:1:1? Obviously a urethane paint is a better option but the O.P. makes that tsc paint look good on all of his right??

garnold 08-20-2014 10:08 PM

Front PTO removed?

ford4150 08-20-2014 10:20 PM

I used Majic B-2944 Cub Cadet Yellow. For my sprayer, a normal batch consisted of 12 oz. paint, 0.75 oz. hardener, 3 oz. reducer. That was double the recommended reducer on the label. On my system the air regulator was set @ 42 psi. I still use the old suction cup sprayer. I bought and tried one of these HVLP types and didn't like the result. Went back to what I was comfortable with.
Same proportions for the Majic IH white. Sorry, I don't have an empty quart to check the paint code. It's what's on the shelf at TSC.
As for drying time; It varies with humidity. I try to wait for 50% days for the large pieces. Smaller pieces I paint, then bring them in the house to dry and keep flying insects out of the wet paint. I don't have a wife that tells me I can't. Normally I don't even touch painted pieces for 24 hours.
As with all paint, surface prep is the main thing. High $$ paint won't cover up poor prep. I sandblasted all sheet metal and wheels. I used a needle gun on the hydro unit. Didn't want any sand near that. Used stripping gel and wire wheels on anything that wouldn't fit in my ultrasonic cleaner.

Alvy 08-20-2014 10:42 PM

Very cool, thank you for the details as it is very helpful. I have an old Binks gun that I spray with. I'm still rather new at the painting part but have had a few complete jobs under my belt; and you are so right, it's really like 90 percent prep and 10 percent paint it seems.

Billy-O 08-20-2014 10:50 PM

That 149....so purty!
