New Cub Cadet tractor.

Cub Cadet posted these pictures like this on facebook. They were basically teasers for their new tractor that they are unveiling tomorrow. Honestly I can't wait to see what they came up with.

How about you guys?

Show me a decent frame, trans housing and running gear. A fancy yellow hood doesn't make it run or last any better. Just more MTD marketing BS to me. I'll stick to 1996 or older thank you. :bash2:

HoundDog 09-14-2014 06:44 PM

I heard that

olds45512 09-14-2014 07:00 PM

From what I can see its ugly and its probably the Same China junk they all are.

You can have all that Sam. Should only cost between $8 & $10K just like our 72 & 82 series did back in the 80's & 90's but everybody is too cheap to buy good stuff now days. I would like to give more details but I gotta run to Harbor Freight to get some tools.:biggrin2:

My 125s are just fine and after 46 years, have a proven track record on longevity .

They had a pretty good $5,000.00 to $7,000.00 machine but not many sold so what do they do?

Send it over the pond and paint it a different color.

Here you have what a 3000 series looks in red.

johncub7172 09-14-2014 07:55 PM

I can't wait to see it! Why not? What's the big deal?

bocephus1991 09-14-2014 08:27 PM

I saw some pics on their Facebook page. Cheap cast aluminum steering gear, common lawn tractor rear end. Sure it looks nice mows decent and will windup in a scrap yard in 10 years. I still love my old 1200 and 1211. Now if I could sneak a 1806 or 1650 twin stick in my garage without wife knowing ,that would be awesome!

drglinski 09-14-2014 08:50 PM

I see plastic, plastic and more plastic. So far, not optimistic.

J-Mech 09-14-2014 09:57 PM

I have no interest either. Looks like all the other cheap mowers out there. If I were to buy a brand new mower, it definitely wouldn't be a Cub Cadet. Sorry boys, just not impressed with anything after they did away with the metal hood machines. Cyclops was still a great tractor. I just don't like all the plastic. If they had just done fiberglass it would have been fine. Even when they came back out with the metal hoods, the machine's base had taken such a drop in durability, that I have no interest. Nope, I'll keep my old machines, and I'll keep buying and fixing them up. I'll have a whole fleet (and do) for what one of those cheap Chinese pieces of crap go for.

Yes I'll take a look at it but no, I'll never buy one. I can say this without even seeing it.

The XT3 looks like the existing 2000 with a yellow hood. Some serious engineering had to go into that. Looked at the video the others look like the standard belt drive big box stuff they are already sell short of some cosmetic changes and the blue tooth deal. Yep just gotta have a tractor calling my cell phone telling me it needs an oil change. Give me a break. :biggrin2:

Agreed! Without more info or specs on the machines, it looks to be mostly cosmetic at best. New hood, no more white color (booo!!), and a sensor that transmits hours to your phone because that's really all it is, there is no "on board computer" telling your phone oil change intervals, air filter changes, etc. Now when it can tell me how many gallons of fuel I have left, lets me remote start in the winter, tells me my acre/hour rate, etc, then I'll be impressed :biggrin2:. Otherwise, it's a new design, new color scheme, and a fancy frame coating; that's about it. Gimmicks to sell machines. :BlahBlah:

rwairforce 09-15-2014 09:53 AM

I will continue to visit my garage to view real Cub Cadets. It's incredible the prices for these. I saw an orange Husky at Lowes yesterday for $2200 with a 54" deck, etc, etc that I would buy before any of these.
I'm just be happy that I have some of the old iron to look at and marvel at the materials used in those old IH made tractors. If I really would need just another grass cutter I think I would pay half and get the orange one. I have plenty of the real stuff.

cub123 09-15-2014 10:04 AM

Hmmm, looks like a classic case of form before function. Bold styling, not bold durability.:biggrin2: Not that I think it looks that great, lol. The last thing I need on a mower is another gimmick that connects to a phone:bash2:

olds45512 09-15-2014 10:11 AM

The only one that has any eye appeal at all is the xt3, the other 2 look like total garbage. I'd never buy any of them but I would take the xt3 if it were given to me.

cubs-n-bxrs 09-15-2014 10:14 AM

They all look like little transformers. Scrap iron and plastic at best.:bash2:

I know. No one is telling me I have to go out and buy one. I mean, what manufactured in this day of age that can't be made better? Not saying there are not better choices, but come on......

I'd take a new Cub Cadet lawn tractor in my line up any day! So would a lot of folks who would rather buy new every so many years too. I see many folks on the new Cub Cadets. I would with out doubt, find a more pleasurable operation in a new Cub Cadet than an old-ash big-dummy garden tractor.

I find it hard to swallow opinions when I have not had the chance to operate a new Cub Cadet.

I beg to differ, good sir! I hate how Cub nowadays has made it a point to streeettccchhh there grills around to the side panels and make everything so...so round  I actually think the looks of the XT1 and XT2 are growing on me (relatively speaking, of course). I like the flatter front end, looks stronger to me. Now the headlights, those are a mistake. They look like they're on the side panels!! :bash2:

No need to swallow or accept another opinion.
An opinion is not a conclusion, may not even be factual, it's only a view that another person has tossed in the arena of conversation. Many times a conversation is fueled by opinions but that's all it is.
In my opinion I could buy a very capable 20 year old Cub that could swing a 54" mower deck, provide power steering, hydro transmission and drag one of these new Cubs around like a lawn roller all the same time for half the money or less. :biggrin2::biggrin2: That's just my opinion and I may not even be able to do it but it sure adds to the conversation....:beerchug:

99% of the response on here are sooooo predictable.

It's Ok guys, everyone loves your old stuff, no one is putting that down. Why the "junk" comments? The box store machines are what they are, and are intended for that. But man, that XT3 aka GTX will run circles around most of yours! And that is the truth.

I guess everyone is driving 60's trucks everyday too. Technology is not stuck in the Cretaceous Period! Robotic welded GTX frame is very robust, it may not stand up if chained to a 982 but who does stupid stuff like that anyway?

Rant over, flame away.

rwairforce 09-15-2014 10:58 AM

I like new stuff. I'm sure most people on here would enjoy new stuff but not for the ridiculous price for said new stuff and for the lack of lasting quality of same new stuff. One probably doesn't need a lawn tractor made from quarter inch steel but you shouldn't have to pay these prices for the plastic and lack of steel you get. The new stuff may last for 20 years but for the price you pay just to mow grass it's makes it a difficult purchase in my mind.
I submit that we all not take this stuff too seriously. It's just a freaking lawn mower! LOL!:biggrin2::BlahBlah::beatdeadhorse:
After all it's your money, buy what you want.

Flame on! :biggrin2:

I doubt that XT3 could run circles around a solid, older machine. I'm not putting the new stuff down by any means, but the "junk" comments you are referring to about newer equipment are there for a reason; Cub HAS cheapened things up. It was really bad for a while, but it has gotten better. I still don't think the new machines are what the old ones were. The newer ones just feel...cheaper when compared. I'm not going to get into it because I don't want it to seem like I don't like the new ones at all. They are great at what they are designed to do; cut grass and pull a cart (and a tiller for some, snow blower, etc depending on model). But like so many older things, the older Cubs were overbuilt.

As for "it may not stand up if chained to a 982 but who does stupid stuff like that anyway?"; well, you're looking at one guy! Just for giggles one eve this summer, a friend and I chained two 1/2 Silverados together and hooked them to...you guessed it; my 2284. Pulled them without a hickup. Why? Just because we could. I don't know that I'd do that with a newer Cub, which I guess is my point; while they may be well build, robotically welded machines with shaft drive, etc., etc., they don't give a guy the confidence the classic Cub does. The confidence to do more than it was designed to do. But you're right, for 99% of the people, they will never do that kind of thing.

Ok, flame over :biggrin2:

Disclaimer: this was written in good spirits with no ill feelings towards anyone or any machine. There are personal opinions in there, but they are just that; personal OPINIONS. My opinions are based on seeing, sitting, and working on a couple newer machines, and those weren't very positive experiences, but I digress.

Cheers guys, love and peace and all that :beerchug:

j4c11 09-15-2014 12:49 PM

So what is this, a lawn tractor, a garden tractor? I see one of them has a snow plow, can you pull a Brinly plow with this thing? It seems to me the equivalent of an older Cub Cadet garden tractor, both price and quality wise, would be a sub-compact nowadays, not sure if we're comparing apples to apples. I would personally not buy one of these when I could get an IH built Cub for about what I would pay in taxes on the new one, but each to his own ultimately.

CAO65 09-15-2014 12:54 PM

I for one am glad Cub changed the lawn tractor look distinguishing it from the garden tractor. Some of the high end 1000 series looked liked the 2000 series giving people the perception they had a garden tractor when they did not.
Now, for "my opinion" on the old versus the new. It seems to me there are 4 major parts to a tractor: engine, transmission, deck, and frame.
Engine. I feel the Kohler Command engine is a better built engine compared to the single cylinder Kohler engines of yesteryear. I know many people with old Cubs with single cyclinder engines that have been rebuilt long before 500 hours was reached. I had a Command in a Sears Craftsman tractor with close to 700 hours that purred like a kitten and used NO oil. I would even say the Command is better than the Magnum. Command does not have the governor issue the Magnum has. Now, I love the sound of the old engines; I still feel Commands are better.
Transmissions. Old IH Cubs had cast iron and so do the new ones. I am not stupid, however, as I know IH Cubs had Sunstrand while the new ones have Hydrogear. I feel the old wins this one easily.
Decks. I have a fabricated 48" deck. I feel it tops anything of yesteryear hands down with the exception of the Haban decks. The fabricated deck is so thick and heavy I can't imagine the deck ever failing. Check them out for yourself.
Frames. I know frames of IH Cubs were likely built of heavier gauge material, but the new ones are designed and built with technological improvements--robotic welding and CAD. And, how well were the frames of IH Cubs in the Quietline series? Most of these tractors vibrated the operator and needed frame modifications to secure the engines. I'll give this a toss up, however.
That sort of leaves it up to plastic versus metal hoods, control panels and such. Metal scratches, but plastic doesn't. Plastic melts, but metal does not--I know it does in a blast furnace. Yet, I wonder how my plastic, less tough GT 2000 weighs ±1000 pounds when most IH Cubs made of manly steel and metal are around ±800 pounds?
This old versus new argument can be fun, but in the end, I would rather sit my a$$ on a Cub than anything else.
Hope, I didn't offend anyone in my writing. It really is all in fun. Have a good day.

.....

You make some interesting points, but reliability and quality are determined in the field not with Superman vs Spiderman type arguments. I know a gentleman who's been making a living for the past 25 years tilling and plowing people's gardens with a 1650. He has replaced the engine about 10 years ago, but he's still using the same tractor. The question is, would any garden tractor that Cub Cadet produces today withstand that kind of abuse not for 25 but even 10 years? Will we see today's tractors happily mowing 40 years in the future like my 1450 mows today? Time will tell , but I am skeptical.

CAO65 09-15-2014 02:35 PM

Jc411,
You know one man with a Quietline that has done well with it. Percentage wise that is a low number compared to the many that had their a$$ vibrated and needed frame modifications. Superman versus Spiderman comparisons? There are many on this site who can weigh in on the engine comparison, but I hardly doubt those ironhorse engines with no filter or pressurized system of yesteryear have the reliability of the modern Command engine. I imagined when the Cyclops tractors came out people of IH Cub fandom felt those tractors were plastic junk and would never hold up over time. Some on here feel those style tractors were the best built tractors Cub ever made. As I have stated numerous times on this forum, it is too early to tell if these modern tractors will hold up as well, but I am going to find out.

HoundDog 09-15-2014 02:37 PM

My 127 makes me wish the grass grew faster. I'm on the IH side of the thing. My only complaint with my old tractor is blade speed. But, on the other hand, mowing at a slower speed gives me more seat time!

I feel like these two are the more down to earth people here. And to side with Shotgun Wedding. My grandparents have a 2002 craftsman something rather. I have mowed with it and I can say that it is NOT crap. It will mow better and faster than ANY of my old Cubs. That IS A FACT. Technology grows people. It may not be as durable but it might do the job better. And I am seriously considering buying one of these new Cub Cadets. I don't care what anyone thinks. I want something that I know will start. Many of my IH Cubs I'm not sure will start without needing to be jumped or have starter fluid injected(That's mostly my fault for buying all the beat up old ones). You are all basically insulting your own tractors. The engineers over at Cub Cadet put a lot of time and the have pride in there work. Then this happens. Nonstop criticism. But as of now I'm using my 1650 for mowing and I can say my grandparents mower would get it done faster with just as good of a cut.

I just needed to get that out of my system. :beerchug:

I think the guys (I can speak for myself, at least) that are "insulting" the new Cubs are doing so mostly out of jest and frustration with the way things are today. I don't think anybody is saying the new Cubs can't cut grass quickly and well, we're all talking about longevity and getting the best bang for your buck. Maybe we're speaking on a commentary on society, that not everything has to be faster, more curvy, and linked to a phone. Your grandparents 2002 Craftsman may cut grass quick and well, and may do it quicker than your older Cubs, but put it against a good 82 series, or Cyclops, or Super, then compare aftermarket options and parts support down the road. Part of the problem with newer machines is who knows if parts (outside the engine) will be available for the deck, frame, body panels, etc 5, 10, 20 years down the line. The guys who are "knocking" the newer machines aren't necessarily doing so because they don't think they can cut grass well or push snow with a blade, or use a tiller, or a plow, etc, it's because they don't have confidence in them to be still working strong 20+ years from now. They don't know that parts will still be readily available for them 20+ years from now. Older Cubs (and other GT's) are proven over 20, 30+ years to be reliable, old iron that takes a lickin, keeps on tickin.

If I wasn't from a farm background, or didn't want to work on things like I do, yeah, I would be all over a newer machine because all I'd want to do is cut grass. But the more you know, the more you learn, the more you want to do, the older Cubs become more and more appealing. I have a neighbor who mows half the field between his place and mine. He uses a Craftsman from the early 2000's I'd guess. Still works, and it isn't falling apart, too much. He adds oil, starts it up, and cuts his yard, then goes inside. He zips around because he wants to get the job done and be off the thing. When I mow, I check the oil, start it up, let it warm up, then sit proudly atop 15+ year old machinery that will continue to run strong for years to come and enjoy every pass I make.

So for the old vs new: it's a pride thing. It's a long term build quality and parts thing. It's an aesthetic thing. It's an old iron vs new steel/plastic thing. It's a personal preference thing. But it is not a personal thing, making it my old vs your new. Don't take comments personally, they are opinions. The guys defending the new stuff are just as bad as the guys knocking it.

Now, let's get back to the new Cubs released today and wait and see what the build quality is like under the shiney new hood and paint :beerchug:

I agree in every way. I own mostly old but I still have some new things around here. I'm just sayin. I'm still loyal to Cub Cadet and I wouldn't mind owning one of them. I also feel that the ones insulting the new tractors shouldn't tell anyone that they are loyal to cub cadets. If you insult any Cub Cadet in anyway, you aren't loyal to your brand and you don't deserve to say that. It made me sad seeing all the people here just bashing it.

I agree. It upsets me to see MTD take the Cub Cadet name, once an icon of quality and reliability, and put it on some POS* machinery with 4 wheels that they call tractors.

Guys

We get the old compared new thing every couple months. Kind of like the Hy-Tran compared to every other oil under the Sun. It's all about what you like and what you want to do with your cash. Just my 2 cents but I don't give a crap what you want to buy, it's your money. I like old stuff, I'm old, my tractors are old and we get along. I guess new fancy looking stuff is what the world is all about today. Probably why there is some new wiz bang cell phone out every other day that you can't live without. OK Rant over. Do what ever you want. :beatdeadhorse: :biggrin2:

LOL Sam you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I would warp back to the 60's-70's in a heartbeat. Give me old school stuff any day. Life was the cats meow prior to cell phones and computers. :beerchug:

We get the old compared new thing every couple months. Kind of like the Hy-Tran compared to every other oil under the Sun. It's all about what you like and what you want to do with your cash. Just my 2 cents but I don't give a crap what you want to buy, it's your money. I like old stuff, I'm old, my tractors are old and we get along. I guess new fancy looking stuff is what the world is all about today. Probably why there is some new wiz bang cell phone out every other day that you can't live without. OK Rant over. Do what ever you want. :beatdeadhorse: :biggrin2:

I don't think you get it. It's not about fancy machines, although the Bluetooth idea is pretty dumb, buying a new GTX is about reliability. 95% of this forum is based on putting the old pieces back together, my spindle bearings seized and my trunion is screwed blah blah blah.

The new machines, the robust ones that we spend $6 grand on, which incidentally is same as what these 70s machines cost back then in comparable dollars are about performance. I pull a cultivator and box blade with mine all the time, would plow too if I had a need which I do not. My point is these new machines we spend our money on are more than fancy!

Lets ask one question. If any of us died and our spouses decided to stay in the house/farm they live, would you be comfortable leaving them to 30 year old machines to keep the grass cut and the garden planted?? I think not.

And I think this must be jest. As if things were better in the 60s 70s. My god, that's preposterous.
