Picked up a deck for my O

Took a ride to Welcome NC to and picked up a decent deck for my O thanks to the post in the c-List section by j4c11.

I bought the unrestored deck that he had listed. All I need is a good shell.

http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=34946

After that the wife and I stopped at Richard Childress racing, it was about 2 streets up the road and checked that out, then we stopped at the Can Am dealer on the way home and looked at Can Am Spyders. Playing with the idea of buying one.

If any of you get the chance to check out the Nascar shops it's worth the time. Incredible operations. Having 3 teams with 20 +- mil budgets each can pay for a lot of cool stuff. Being an ex racer I was like a druggie going through withdrawal.

I love how RCR is waaaay out in Welcome no where near the mecca of Nascar shops (Mooresville, etc). I visited it once a few years ago on a NC trip. It was crazy weird looking at all the iconic cars that big E drove that I've only seen in pictures/on tv. Crazy amount of history in those buildings. Of all the places I visited during my trip, (JR Motorsports, DEI, RCR) I think I enjoyed RCR the best.

PS Nice looking deck for the O.

Alvy 10-02-2014 09:07 PM

He bought the unrestored one not pictured. I actually was going to have a friend of mine in huntersville NC go get it tomorrow if it was still there. You beat me to it Sam

Berwil 10-02-2014 11:31 PM

Congrats on the deck Sam.

My wife and I love going to charlotte. We been to half a dozen race shops and mwr was by far the best. They have a cat walk that you can look down in all the rooms and see the guys building components and cars. You can even take a tour of the fab shop and see them laying out the cars in the jig. Doesn't have the history of rcr, but for a fabricator who would love to make a living building race cars, it's a cool tour.

I have already rebuilt the spindles and the other moving parts on my deck but the shell has been patched and it is a crappy job. Plan is to sand blast and paint the rusty looking one and transfer the good parts to it. 1st 2 pics are the deck that came with my O, 3rd pic is the one I picked up yesterday.

Shrewcub 10-03-2014 09:32 AM

Cool deal, Sam!:beerchug:

Is the O going to replace the 2182 or 1782?:biggrin2:

The O will just enjoy retirement. :biggrin2:

red56turbo 10-03-2014 09:48 AM

Good buy Sam. I think you should put that deck under one of the Supers. :biggrin2:

The Can Ams are pretty neat looking rides. I've seen some guys customize them to their needs/specs. I'm sure one would look good in your garage.

Tacosteelersman 10-03-2014 09:57 AM

That O deck fell into the right hands. A nice face Lift before retirement. Can't wait to see it all together.

Oak 10-03-2014 05:53 PM

Nice find on the deck same. It will look good on the O.

I'm about 10 miles from Awesome Bill's shop in Dawsonville (his old original shop) and about 8 miles from his mansion. Now I find myself cheering for Chase.:beerchug:

So who got the restored one? :-)

Not me. I was not overly impressed with the resto job. End plate had been replaced and the welding looked like bird poop. The spindles seemed very tight, it was painted the wrong colors, the covers were painted black and it looked like it was painted with a brush. Up side, the pulleys looked like new and from what I could see it looked like it has new bearings in it.

I disassembled the deck yesterday. Now I need to sand blast it, fill the rust pits (luckily it's not rotted through) paint it and transfer my rebuilt spindles and drive to this shell. Not sure what I'll do with the remains. Pretty sure I could make a decent worker out of the leftover parts. :beerchug:

Sam Mac 10-09-2014 07:34 PM

Latest on the "O deck" sandblasted it and I have been doing patch up work on it for a couple days. Replaced some of the runners and doing some bondo work on the rust pits in the shell. It's coming along nicely. Sorry no pics at the moment. Just a FYI I ordered a case of Valspar IH White from Lowes today. I had some from TSC before they started selling that Majic crap that I used on the rest of my O so I wanted to match the rest of the white when I paint the deck.

Got the shell painted today. Now I need to strip the other parts off the other deck and put them on this shell. :beerchug:

bolivier 10-17-2014 05:50 PM

PaulS 10-17-2014 07:00 PM

now that the weather is warming up I got back to this project. Stripped the other deck, cleaned and painted some parts and started put it together. When it's done it will be the combined parts from 3 decks to make one decent deck. Ran out of yellow paint so off to the parts store tomorrow.

jbrewer 04-01-2015 06:07 PM

Oh man, that's really looking good Sam! You've done a fine job getting that to where it is now.

Thanks for the comments guys. Kind of fun to work on what started this whole Cub thing. My guess is if they had to reproduce the O today we would be looking at $4000.00 to $5000.00. Pretty good design considering we are talking about early 1960's technology. Best part is this will still be going when the current big box store crap has been sent to the scrap yard.

mrmiller 04-01-2015 07:07 PM

The deck is looking good so far Sam!! :beerchug:

There are more existing O's left from 196X, than "box store" mowers built in 199X.

Nice work. :beerchug:

jbrewer 04-01-2015 07:43 PM

My scrappy O pulled my 782 (which had a major fuel leak) out of the shed and up the hill with no complaints. It also started without any drama after 4 months of lying fallow over the winter (hey, it's NC...winter is short!).

I'll keep it as long as I'm around they're darned fine machines. Sam, yours is going to a trailer queen if you're not careful!

Alvy 04-01-2015 07:49 PM

Sam do you have a parts list of what you're replacing? I can get numbers just curious of what's getting pitched. My deck is in need and after I'm done with the tractor resto I'm on to the deck. Looks like I got some welding to do at the hangers. Did yours have cracks too? How are you're cogged pulleys? The teeth on mine are pretty worn.

This shell didn't need much in the way of welding. I have some left over parts that may be of some use to you, I'll get some pics of what I have.

Sam Mac 04-02-2015 03:57 PM

It will be mounted. Doubt that I'll use it but I could. :beerchug:

Thanks guys for the comments. Only reason for me having an "O" is that my late uncle got me started with Cubs when he bought a brand new "O" around 62 or 63. As far as cutting grass goes I'll leave that to the Big Dog. :beerchug:

May be calling you when I get that far for some assistance....but as you can see in my Original's progress that'll be awhile:biggrin2:
