Bought a plow

Scored a plow today 4 miles from home. Seems pretty big. Saw it in front of a local feed store and called about it Friday, he told me $40 so I beat feet down there.

bocephus1991 12-13-2014 10:35 PM

Good score! I had one bought for $50 ,but couldn't get there for a few days and the guy sold it, can't blame him. Will keep my eye out for one that's resonable in price. There's a guy here in town has one for $155 , but feel that kinda high and he would only come down to $150.

Great score!!!!

J-Mech 12-14-2014 12:19 AM

What size is it? :bigthink:

64fleetside 12-14-2014 08:26 AM

I dunno Jon, first plow I've ever had-guy told me it was a 14"=when I measure the top curved plow part it is 10", but the bottom adds over 3 1/2 ".
I can tell its a Brinly, the decal can be made out still.

cubs-n-bxrs 12-14-2014 08:50 AM

Looks like a 10" plow to me. I had a 12" Brinly and it had a brace from the landslide to the back of the moldboard. :beerchug:

Nice plow, great price, when you gonna use it?

drglinski 12-14-2014 08:22 PM

Awesome price. Did it come with a coulter?

here it is with a yardstick, no coulter but you can tell it had one at one time this is how the guy said you measured a plow. I couldn't find that post by merk before I went to buy it.

Your doing it wrong......

Post number 8 has the link in it to show you how to measure a plow......

64fleetside 12-14-2014 09:56 PM

Just walked out and measured using merk's method and it is 11". No pic cause it's dark out.

:Forgot: LOL, No..... they didn't make plows in odd numbers. It's either a 10" or a 12". 12" is the biggest.

64fleetside 12-14-2014 10:12 PM

Gotta be 10" then-its dark chilly and I ran out there in my houseshoes and tossed a tape measure across quickly, sorry man...

J-Mech 12-14-2014 10:20 PM

Either way, congrats. Garden use? Or planning for a plow day?

64fleetside 12-14-2014 10:33 PM

Garden. Don't know of any plow days around here. I don't have much ground so a small tractor seems to be what I need.

drglinski 12-15-2014 06:01 PM

Yup, gotta measure from the point to the top of the share.

Either way, nice plow.

Alvy 12-15-2014 08:52 PM

Yes nice plow. There was a guy at my last show that was selling them for $125 and up. Nice score. So should they come with the coulter? Is it missing one or were they an option?

64fleetside 12-15-2014 09:00 PM

I dunno if it was a Lew price, but I thought I couldn't go wrong. I can tell this one had a coulter at one time by the marks around the bolt holes. I'll keep an eye on ePay for one, I guess.

64fleetside 12-21-2014 10:02 PM

Today scored a sleeve hitch, Bolens 50lb wheel weights, and a carb from a guy 49 miles away. Got one side of the weights painted(they were orange) and will score some bolts tomorrow at work.

IHCadetCollector 12-22-2014 11:11 AM

Yes, they should have a coulter. As for the rust, take a wire wheel to the plowface till it shines otherwise you won't be doing any plowing with that. When your done wire wheeling it grease it up to keep it from rusting do this after every time you use it too.

Wire wheel won't shine that thing up. Grinder with a flap disk, or even a grinding wheel (don't get carried away if you use a actual grinding disk). Then, use it, USE IT, USE IT!! Best way to shine a plow..... USE! See if you can find a farmer that will let you go run it in his field. Take a scraper and don't let dirt build up on the moldboard. Scrape it off as often as possible and eventually, it will shine. Then like the IHCadetCollector said, keep it oiled so it doesn't rust up again. :beerchug:

IHCadetCollector 12-22-2014 11:39 AM

Couldn't hurt to at least knock the rust off it with a wheel or grinder but as you pointed out it will never get as good as it would if you use it in the field. If used enough it should look like a mirror.

64fleetside 12-22-2014 11:39 AM

Flap disc seems to be doing the best, with brown Roloc's coming in second. I really want to clean it up some first then plow. Guy had maybe 10 plows, and only one with a coulter. There's 40+acres next to me with a hole in the fence so yeah I'll be plowing.

Steve149 12-22-2014 01:02 PM

near as I can tell with a bit of photoshop trickery it looks to measure 12"

64fleetside 01-16-2015 09:16 AM

If anyone heard a Tim "The Toolman" Taylor style 'ARRR ARR ARRR' last nite about dark it was me turning dirt in the garden. The 129 pulled it fine, I got a lot of learnin and adjusting to do.
It is a 10" plow, I marked the shop floor on the sides of the plow and measured the distance between. Plowing does polish it more than anything.

Bought a cutivator also. Was pretty rough. Made three new standards from 3/4" round rod(practiced some blacksmithing, heating to red hot and pounding the ends flat and then adding a curve) bought 6 new tines and welded up a couple cracks in the frames. Made wheel stands also(but not in the pic) by welding 1/2" clevis pins to 3/4" round rod-I had part of one wheel stand to copy.
