CC Storage Building Started
I framed most of the storage shed I am building to store my tractors and implements. I am trying to do it as inexpensively as I can. I have a friend who drives a cement truck that got me some leftover mud for next to nothing. This morning I got some distressed lumber that is more than what I need to get this shed and another I need to build done.
This is the slab I poured: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps67870986.jpg I had a put it in between the backyard fence, a hillside and a redwood tree. I used the biggest area I could. I got most of the walls framed this afternoon: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pse18f757b.jpg It's small, 11' x 14' with a 4' x 8' area in the back. It should be plenty big enough to store my 1000, 1450, #2 tiller, box scraper and off-topic log splitter. Tomorrow I'll work a short day and get the door opening framed and the front wall completed. I am planning on making a roll-up door and getting some garage door tracks and hardware. I'll probably make the door 8' wide. I was out there in jeans and a t-shirt. I probably could have worn shorts it was a beautiful day and a relief from all the rain we have had this month. Bob |
Bob, looks like you are off to a very rapid start. I didn't know if you used treated lumbar for your sill plate or put a moisture barrier on it. Whatever dimensions you decided on, double them for future plans.:biggrin2: My collection has grown more rapidly than my storage will allow, so I am entertaining the idea of putting up an 18' x 21' steel storage building to catch the overflow.
Keep up the good work and keep posting those pics! Cub Cadet 123 |
Looks good Bob95065

I'm in California where Cub Cadets are almost non-existent. I don't think I'll fill the shed anytime soon.
They delivered the lumber at 12 noon and I had what you see done by 4. Today will be a short day because it is Christmas Eve. I will drill holes in the slab and sill and bolt it down with Red Heads. If I can get the outside sheeted with T1-11 plywood I'll call it a day. Next I need to stack the roof and finish it. I am planning on framing a gable roof. I have to join two roofs because of the section in the back. I have never done that before and I am looking forward to the challenge. |

Looks like a nice little shed, as long as you have a couple "cubby" holes:ROTF2:
In the rafters to shove up the usual shop " junk" your destined to accumulate you'll be good to go. |
Looks good!
|
You'll have that thing filled up in no time. Looks great.
|
This is where I left it today:
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psa0559583.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps0486af52.jpg I am having a great time stacking the roof. I haven't joined two gable roofs with unequal spans before. It's fun figuring out the angles and cuts. I plan on putting my 1000, 1450, mower deck, tiller and BB-360 scraper in there. I also have an old Lickety Log Splitter and a bunch of smaller items that will end up in there too. I tried to use as much available space as possible. I hope it doesn't take long to fill it up. Tomorrow I have to finish the jack rafters, collar ties and I hope to get the fascia on. After that sheeting and roofing. We have a break in the rain right now and I want to take advantage of the weather. |
good job bob...it is fun, i miss that too.. used to do rough in/stick framing, in my younger days...are those red woods in your yard??? that is cool

We are on 2 acres in Felton, CA which is about 7 miles north of Monterrey Bay. I can walk to Henry Cowell Redwood Park from our house. It is a beautiful place and we are grateful to live here. The house was neglected for many years and I work hard every weekend on it. Once this shed is done I can get my garage cleared out and start making cabinets for the kitchen remodel. |
it looks like an amazing place, good job!!..i have always liked redwood trees, crazy the size of them in person....just the other day i was trying to buy a stick of redwood, for a christmas gift i was building, and cant even get it anymore!!! well, not without finger joints and paying through the nose...sad when man has to say that its been "depleted"....
|
That's crazy. There's redwood dimensional lumber all around here, but it is expensive. I grew up in Illinois and never saw redwood until I moved here. It is the preferred material for decks.
|
I said I would take pictures but I didn't. Sorry. I was busy today.
I got the jack rafters done on the short span side, finished all the gable plywood, cut the tails and put the fascia on the front, put in the suports for the flying rafter in the yard side and got that rafter up and the fascia on the yard side done. Tomorrow I hope to complete the gables and fascia then I can sheet the roof and start putting shingles on it. |
Nice work on the shed Bob!
Hope you can add a lean to if needed:) The Cub thing can get out of hand! Freezing in PA. Regards, Chris |
Nice project, but we need more pics. :beerchug:

I got the roof sheeted today. I bought the T1-11 plywood to finish the front but my priority is to get the roof on it. We have a dry spell but it will rain again soon. I can work on the siding in the rain.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps72aefe9a.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps8eea6aae.jpg Tomorrow I'll start roofing. I hope it goes fast. I have to go back to work Monday and I want to get it done before the end of the weekend. I am really happy with how this project is turning out. A friend was trying to talk me into putting a flat roof on the shed. The gable roof looks so much better. |

I think it looks great. I have one question, why didn't you just go with a little less slope for the section that sticks out further in the back?
|
Love it!!! Sheds just for cubs!! My wife would kill me if I told her that is why I want to move!!:biggrin2: Very nice work man.. Are you gonna put in windows??

1. I always wanted to join two gable roofs of unequal span at 90°. This gave me an opportunity to practice framing. 2. The way I did it looks better. Had I put a flat roof on the back it would have looked like a giant ramp. I thought it would have looked funny. The two gable approach looks right. 3. This gave me more storage space in the rafters. Today I bought shingles and underlayment. I went with "synthetic" underlayment by GAF. It was a lot easier than working with 30## felt. I hope it works as well as it is to work with. I put drip edge on all the exposed plywood and put the underlayment down. I got the front shingled and about 1/2 of the back. I will finish the roof tomorrow. I gotta see if they stock ridge shingles for the style I chose. I'm getting sick of cutting shingles and don't want to do any more. |
looks very nice Bob..i like the gable, i like the valleys...flat roofs are (in my opinion) one of the stupidest things one can do to a structure...never re-roofed a single one that didnt have some sort of rot....also, im a big fan of large eaves...the bigger the overhang, the farther the water is from the foundation and building....good job!!

I would like to put windows in the building but not right now. It will be easy to frame them in later. |
It looks good. Always nice to practice new skills.:beerchug:

I got as far as I am going to until next weekend. I have to go back to work. I left on 12/22 and started the shed on 12/23.
This is what I have left:
I have a slab I need to pour next to the garage which is the building across from the shed. I'm going to build a lean-to shed there that will house my air compressor and tank. I put conduit in the ground between that slab and the shed in these pictures. I plan on puling power and running compressed air to the shed through these pipes. That's not a necessity at this point. This is where I left it yesterday: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps839f22ef.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps623de8e1.jpg I tried to get some pictures of the redwoods: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps8c0b6962.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps8066d765.jpg It's hard to get a sense of how tall the trees are because the sun washed out the picture. Not only that these trees have vines on them that hide the trunks. I spent some time yesterday cutting the vines close to the ground. They are embedded in the bark and I don't want them to damage the trees. Today I finished the siding and cleaned up a little: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps8ac5587f.jpg I put my box scraper and log splitter in the shed this afternoon. I have some space back in the garage. I'll put the rest of my yard equipment in it once I get the door on it. Bob |
Wow, looks great Bob! :beerchug:
Bill |
that is just awesome!!! thanks....and i thought my backyard was cool
|
If you get in trouble you can live in that ! Well done. :beerchug:
|
Looking good! Not much longer you'll be done! What did you use for siding?
|
Nice work Bob - love the details! And the Redwoods....WOW! Majestic!

Looks great Bob,putting any windows in it later on?
|
I used T1-11 plywood with 8" centered grooves for siding. It went up fast and easy.
I want to put some windows in but I'll do it later. My objective was to get the building up by the end of Christmas break. I made it. I have a friend who is building a house the next town over. The city is making him put in opening windows on a wall that overlooks a valley. He wanted picture windows. The city's building code requires an opening window in every room. It's a great room so there really is no fire danger. Anyway, the short story is opening windows will go on the house then after the final inspection they will be replaced with a large picture window. I may wind up with those windows. Next weekend I'll take some pictures of the yard looking the other way at my derelict firewood pile. I built a woodshed last fall but we didn't get the wood stacked in time for the winter rains. There's some beautiful redwoods there. |
Paint and trim today.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps4c438443.jpg You can see the 1000 reflectors inside http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psa69a43c2.jpg Redwoods just outside http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psaf88ff09.jpg I have some more to do tomorrow. I split some firewood while I was waiting for paint to dry so I didn't work as hard as I usually do on the shed. |
That'll make a great toy box:beerchug:
What are you using for a door? |
One-car roll-up door will eventually be installed
|
A super duper job,
:beerchug: Nik, |
Looks great Bob!! :beerchug:
I want one... Ok maybe 3, one for each pair of Cubs.:biggrin2: |
Really nice job on the shed, Bob. Any idea just how tall those trees are next to the shed? They are awesome!
|
I realized I didn't post the end of the story.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psuw1wflu3.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psfgnadmdf.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps5ajj4qui.jpg I got a used but great condition roll-up door. I have to put gutters on it and I'll call it complete. Jim, I used a theodolite and measured the tree next to the shed. After a little trigonometry I got 145'. Tall, but only 1/2 the height of some of the biog old-growth redwoods around here. You are looking at California Sequoia Sepervirens or Coastal Redwoods. It is blessing to live here with them. |
Looks great Bob, you did a nice job. They make you get a permit for that sized shed? Over here anything up to 200 sq ft, no permit.
|
Great end result Bob. Definately shows off your talent, wow. Also kudos to you for keeping it going with also having the k series on the wood splitter! Well done. One day I need to get out there and see those trees too, amazing.
