Cyclops front bumper

while surfing e pay i came across a front bumper for a cyclops it was at like 150 bucks. wow they are cool but 150 bucks? does anyone have one they could take a few pics and measurements off of for me i have a tube bender and wanna give one a try. would have to find the end caps but should be able to find something. as per the pics on e pay it looks like it mounts to the front of the tractor so you can still have the mule drive on is this correct. i have dies to bend 1 5/8 and 1 1/8 inch tube not sure if thats the same size but that wouldnt matter much to me if its only gonna cost me 50 bucks to make

BassBlaster 02-09-2015 04:07 PM

I saw it as well and thought the same thing. I can make that myself for a whole lot less. I don't own a bender but the muffler shop up the street has bent steel pipe for me before and they never charge me more than about 10 bucks. Ill be curious to see dimensions too as I definitely plan to weld something up soon.

Shrewcub 02-09-2015 04:52 PM

The big tube is 1.5", the small one is .75". I measured the front and back side length. Around the front it was 32" and 28" around the back. So the tube should probably be 30" long. Heres a few pics.

shrew how does it attach to the tractor it bolts on i assume? when you get some free time post a pic of what that area looks like. looks to me as if it bolts onto the two front holes in the frame and the top of the bracket looks to bend and go out horizontal to the ground? does the bracket cover the front of frame at all looks as tho it might be really close to hydro outlets? tube size isnt too far off 1 5/8 and 1 1/8 would look fine i think. oh and thanks

Shrewcub 02-09-2015 05:07 PM

Yep just bolts on. Does this pic help?

Just one bolt each side. The angle of the bend would stop vertical movement. The bumper is very sturdy.
Drill 1/2" clearance holes? Don't know if the frame has the holes in it, bumper was on the CC when purchased.

After looking at the one on my new CCC 1641 I too would make one. Made to accommodate weights or a carrier if required.

Frame has the holes. These are the same threaded holes you would use to bolt on your snowblower. Obviously the bumper comes off when the blower is on but can stay on with the deck and mule

have the tubes bent up need to go to town to grab some flatstock to make brackets with. got 2 inches of snow so thats it for today i get a little seat time

Tankman 02-10-2015 06:19 PM

Looks great! Don't forget show 'n tell when you're done!

I was thinking of making one this spring. My '95 CC 1641 has the standard bumper but, I think a carry-all of some sort is needed.

Hey! Grandsons need their chow while drivin' 'round the property! I'm thinking large enough for a cooler for the little guys and me too!

PS. Just removed my bumper for a repaint 'n clean up. Cleaned and painted the yellow frame part also.
The 1/2-13 bolts did threaded into PEM nuts (pressed in). Cleaned the threads with a tap, new bolts and lock washers, always Never-Seez on the threads during reassembly.

Any updates? I don't own a bender so Ill have to go to the muffler shop and get them to bend my stock and I can weld it up myself. Looking forward to your final results.

gt383mag 02-16-2015 03:42 PM

been cold here and dont wanna heat up the garage and i still need to pick up some flat stock for the mounts

Diesel Krazy 02-17-2015 07:52 PM

Looks good so far. I can't wait to see the finished product. Someone needs to start making and selling more of these bumpers to help protect these plastic front ends. I could use one for my 2182.

gt383mag 02-17-2015 09:55 PM

let me get this one finished ... wonder what people would pay for one

Extreme Motorworks already sells a wide frame bumper for $84.00. It can hold up to 300 pounds of weights.

Diesel Krazy 02-18-2015 08:17 AM

Yes Extreme does sell a bumper, I could be wrong but from what I can tell it can only be used if you have your mule drive taken off, so It cannot be used while mowing and that's the most important time to have a front "bumper" in my opinion. Extreme's setup is a great looking weight bracket and I like it but does not serve as a bumper when needed most.

Tankman 02-18-2015 08:51 AM

Great point Diesel. Didn't think of it myself.

With the stock bumper, mow away. Yes, most important.

well it only needs paint now not to bad of a build. wouldnt be against making some more if there was interest and i wasnt doin it for free

BassBlaster 02-22-2015 06:13 PM

That turned out great!!

If your price is reasonable, Id be interested. Planning to make one myself but it will take a lot of running around on my part to get the tubing bent. Whatcha thinkin? You can PM me if you prefer.

Agreed; what kind of price point would you be at? :bigthink:

gt383mag 02-22-2015 06:36 PM

i dunno guys what do you all think is reasonable 75 plus shipping? i dont have plugs for ends and im not gonna paint... however i think it would fit in our small oven for powder coat i would have to look into that. but then were getting as high in price for a real cub one and then why? other than they are scarce. i dunno what you guys think the tube sizes are not same a factory they are a little bigger. 1 5/8 and 1 1/8 instead of 1 1/4 and 3/4 but looks ok i think i have enuff material for a maybe 5 or 6 of them

BassBlaster 02-22-2015 06:41 PM

I think that sounds fair. Im not concerned about paint. Ill shoot some rattle can primer on it to keep it from rusting until I get around to painting the whole tractor.

Could this be left on with a snow blade? not a big deal if it has to come off. Just curious.

Shrewcub 02-22-2015 06:43 PM

That did turn out nice!! Great job! :beerchug:

I think that's a fair price, I'd be in for one as long as I can keep it on with my deck. And as for paint, I'm not the least bit concerned about that. I have paint so that's not a big deal :beerchug:

Tankman 02-22-2015 07:00 PM

Great job and sooooo safe too!

Very nice!

Painted like a candy cane sounds good. :bigthink:

It looks like it'd clear to me as well. Let us know what you decide to do :beerchug:

BassBlaster 02-22-2015 07:08 PM

I never even thought about the mule drive. I guess if it works with the mule drive, it would work with a snow blade huh? I too would want to make sure it will work with the mule drive. Mowing is the main reason want a bumper. Not that I would intentionally ram my tractor into anything but I have bumped a post or two before.

Keep us posted. If it fits, I want one.

gt383mag 02-22-2015 07:09 PM
