1772 Wont Now Start!
 

I'm hoping some one can offer me advice.

I've recently refurbished my 1772 and in the process changed all the fluids and filters. However, it simply wont start now despite me bleeding the fuel lines at all points so I know there's no air in the system.

Prior to doing the service the Tractor started easily on one battery but it now takes a couple to simply turn-over the engine and then it is sluggish.

I'm at a loss as to the problem so suggestions most welcome please.

You have to bleed the high pressure lines while cranking.


Did you do any rewiring?
Did you disassemble anything on the engine?
How old is the battery?
How long since it last ran?

is that at the injectors?

as I followed the procedure in the manual.

Glow plugs working?
Does it smoke?

its giving off a slight puff of white smoke but obviously not igniting the fuel, unsure about the glow plus, how should I check them?

Can you first tell me a little more about what all you did? It would really help the diagnosis...... as is I'm stabbing in the dark.

Did you do any rewiring? A = No

How old is the battery? A = New, and both fully charged
How long since it last ran? A = A couple of months, with fresh fuel now.

I changed the oil filter and oil, hydraulic filter and fluid, fuel filters and replaced the fuel with new. Bleed the fuel lines as already mentioned and installed a new battery. I've doubled up the battery to increase the AMPs as it was struggling on a single battery,

When you bleed the lines, did you crack the lines at the injectors and did you get fuel there?

Yes, I did that. It bubbled air initially then ran with clear fuel.

OK. You didn't do any rewiring, but did you unhook anything? Really odd that it did crank fine before, but not now.

What about the hydrostat. Did you do anything to it, or the driveline? How about PTO? Belts, water pump..... anything that the engine runs that could cause drag on the starter?

no, nothing mechanical apart from fitting the axle brace kit. that all.

Good connections at battery and starter?

Do you have a DVOM?

yes, I think so. I'll check the earth and glow plugs tomorrow and let you know.
Its really odd.

Last year my 1572 would not start after it overheated. Water pump belt broke. I think I noticed pretty quick. Ended up that it needed a valve job. after valve job it starts and has more power than ever. From what I understand valve adjustment is very important for these engines to start and run.

I would double and triple check your battery cables, and grounds. It sounds like a crappy battery connection to me. If it won't spin over fast, its not going build the heat to start.

I've checked the battery connections today and all showing strong on the meter. I've also pulled the plugs and tested them and all good. So, I'm at a loss and running out of ideas.

Any further suggestions most welcome.

Take a video of it cranking and post it to Youtube (or another hosting site). Then post the link here. I wanna see this thing cranking. :bigthink:

Dear helpers,

Guess what? I cleaned the glow plugs, cleaned the earth, recharged the battery, gave it 45 seconds on the glow plugs, fired it up and it started with a big puff of black smoke then cleared within a few seconds. I've taken it out in to my field and it is running sweetly and pulling like a train!

Its a mystery, but there you go, I'm now looking forward to using it during the coming season!

Glad to hear that you got it running. Just my 2 cents but I would run a BIG cable straight from the battery to the engine block for a ground/earth. Cubs are notorious for crappy grounds or earth as you guys on the other side of the pond call them.

Don't know if you did a glow plug upgrade or not but you may want to contact Oak, he has a bunch of diesels and can give you some tips. Not sure but I think he is trying to corner the market on them. :biggrin2:

Take a look at this thread. Like I said Oak knows a lot more about these things than I do. I never got into any of this stuff. My Cubs burn gas. :biggrin2:
