K301 Tach

I wasn't sure if this needed to be in the 'General' talk or the 'Engine' forum. So, feel free to move this post where you feel it should be. But I was surfing through Ebay last night and came across a 1250 that had a tach in place of what was the hourmeter. I thought that was pretty cool. So I emailed the seller and asked him if he put that tach in and where he got it. He said he got it from Kirkengines.com. I have heard about this guy a time or two on this forum. But his site is currently down for maintenance. So, my question is this....does anyone know where he gets those tachs from? I don't see him making them....but then again he could be.

David Kirk use to sell a Analog Tach that would nicely fit into the Dash Panel of a Cub Cadet. He had these specially made up for him. Due to the "lack of enthusiasm, and poor sales, he discontinued offering that product. I have looked and looked myself, and can't find a good analog tach that was comparable. Now there are several "digital tachs" (ie: Sentac, Tiny Tach, etc) that can be used.

Well, that sucks. I found this pic while surfing the web. I'd love to get ahold of one.

Same here.

Ash_129 04-23-2015 01:46 PM

I'd buy one also.

I wish I'd have bought one back when he was still selling/had them. It was a 'future plan' item.

OldCubby 04-23-2015 02:51 PM

Maybe we can try and get one of our sponsors to contact Kirkengines.com with hopes that they'd buy a contract of 100 from his supplier. There's already four of us just today that would pick one up. :beer2::beerchug:

R Bedell 04-23-2015 04:54 PM

I already tried to get David to give up his source. He aint saying...:Sad:

captaindemo17 04-23-2015 05:53 PM

Put me in line for at least one !!

twoton 04-23-2015 05:58 PM

Me six, x 3.

OldCubby 04-24-2015 07:56 AM

Sorry guys. We'd have to get David Kirk to order more....I'd imagine we'd need atleast 50 guys to get David to make it happen.

R Bedell 04-24-2015 08:25 AM

IIRC, David said his source required a 100 minimum unit order.

Shrewcub 04-24-2015 11:09 AM

I'll take 4.We are getting closer :bigthink:

cubby102 04-24-2015 02:03 PM

I know I'd be up for one maybe three

OldCubby 04-24-2015 02:31 PM

I think I remember reading somewhere they he was charging $80 shipped for on tach....its alittle pricey. You might change your mind on quanity if the price really was $80 shipped. IF we could get him to order them.

64fleetside 04-24-2015 02:44 PM

Shoot man, what doesn't cost a Benjamin these days....

I guess your right. When it comes to my Cub I tend to spend more. But I really want this tach!

That is what I thought.

cubby102 04-24-2015 03:49 PM

Id still be in it for at least one at that price. Maybe two

olds45512 04-24-2015 03:55 PM

When i was a kid I ran Jr dragster and they all had single cylinder engines and they all had tachs, there readily available if you look up Jr dragster tach.

R Bedell 04-24-2015 07:31 PM

The problem is, the last time I searched, was coming up with theses specs:

* Single cylinder application
* 2" hole Diameter mounting
* 0-4000 RPM Range
* Analog type
* 12VDC

I could not find anything that met all those specs.

:angry:

This is the closest I found,

darryljs 04-24-2015 10:58 PM

I saw these on ebay.

You notice that in Dave Kirk’s,” Building a Hot-Rod Kohler K301”;

http://www.kirkengines.com/downloads...ohlerPartI.pdf

On the bottom of page 11, “This shows the right side of the engine where the Mercury outboard voltage regulator replaces the stock item. This contains the tach driver circuitry for the instrument panelmounted Datcon tachometer.”

I believe that different tachs are triggered by different means. Some like a timing light, “inductive tachs” may be listed as being for 2,4,6 or 8 cylinder engines but may, ( Please correct me if I'm wrong here) be used in other cylinder configurations, like single cylinder, as long as it is being triggered from the proper source.

There’s this one,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VDO-Cockpit-...-/251504700247

don’t know how these are triggered.

And from Datcon;

http://www.datcon.com/en-US/Products...chometers.aspx

part way down on the page, P/N 106461.

I'm going to look into this Mercury outboard voltage regulator with the built in tach circuitry.

OldCubby 04-27-2015 07:57 AM

Does anyone know of someone on this site that has a Dave Kirk Tach? Was there any part numbers on the tach and voltage regulator? I found a marine tach that looks just like Dave Kirks.....just unsure of the voltage regulator and any other parts he added. anyone?

When a Vendor makes a part (or product) for a "Private Label" it is not uncommon to use a Part Number designated by the Private Label or use none at all. This may not bare any fruit.

yea, makes sense. maybe even some close up pics of the front/back of both Tach and regulator to assist in the search.

So, Mr. Bedell. You wouldn't happen to know how many pulses per revolution the stator on a Quietline puts out would you? Possibly how many Hertz?

After some studying.....I think may have found a Tach that'll work with the Quietline series of tractors and newer due to the Stator aka alternator. A few things I need to iron out yet, though.

Another quick question....the K301aqs engine use's points as the firing system to the spark plug. But those points are fired off the timing of the cam. So, it doesn't have a wasted spark? Am I accurate to assume this?

R Bedell 04-27-2015 05:02 PM

The "firing" for the ignition is the same on ALL the K series engines.

jimbob200521 04-27-2015 05:24 PM

Couldn't a guy wire up a generic tach that would register on our Cubs and then take the face off and print/install a new label so it "reads" correctly? For example (accurate numbers are not about to be recited), a tach for a V6 would read 1/3 of what our engines are actually at. So, take the face off, print a new label that's adjusted for the 1/3 difference, and violla; a single cylinder tach. K.I.S.S., right? :bigthink:

Yea, it's an option that I've thought about. I know there are others on this site that would love to find a tach that was plug and plug. Just tying to help others out and contribute the best I can. I think I may have found one. I'm going to buy it and see what I can do with it.

This one is supposed to work for a 1 to 10 cylinder, it's 2 1/16" and $56.99 with free shipping.
Attachment 64704
I ordered this one to see if it works on our cubs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/291162356660...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I also ordered a couple of really inexpensive tachs that I am going to see if I can modify them to work on a one cylinder engine with a coil, like on a Kohler. All that's needed, is to change a resister value for the pulse signal. Might take a while, but I'll let you all know how it works out. If it does work, it would be only $25 or $30 for a tach. I had gotten one of those digitals, like the Tiny Tach, but I don't like it. Just seems to lag behind the RPM's.

It looks promising....I wish they had one like that down to 4,000rpm. Let me know how it works for you.

darryljs 04-28-2015 09:16 PM

I would have liked if it was 4000 too, but sometimes you have to take what you can get. I should be getting it soon, then I'll post if it works as soon as I get to try it. I'm still searching for others.:biggrin2:

It's backward, I think. I used a diagnostic tach when I tuned up my 321, lowest scale was 4 cyl and I had to multiply the reading times four to get the right number. So when setting high rpm 34-3600 (I forget which) I was reading 850-900 rpm. Idle speed I didn't bother with, played it by ear, too hard to read. I have something similar to this, without the cyl number switch. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/2614942...lpid=82&chn=ps

Nitro 04-29-2015 03:30 AM

According to the internet, where All Things Are True, you need a universal Diesel marine tachometer, as do I. Found this: http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic...r-onan-kohler/

I dont know if this may be of some use but I've wondered about tring it on my offroaf mower toy. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000EVYHKY?vs=1 along with this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001QU...XRX2HTBE87TAKZ
Sorry if the links didn't come up click able I'm posting from my phone and it won't let me insert them correctly

cubby102 04-29-2015 05:37 AM

http://equus.com/Product/Detail/7988...7-7B0DD14DBE08 this may work also. Tring to locate one in 4000 rpm with a small enough diameter
