Trans mount bolt length
2 Attachment(s)
I started the "Standard Maintenance" on the 1864 I picked up on Saturday. It is a low hour machine (514 hr) but hasn't been cared for very well in the past and has most of the issues of a neglected Cyclops., bad plastic, lack of grease, bad spindle bearings, play in the steering and broken mount bolts on the trans. Of the 4 bolts 3 are missing and the 4th is broken at the threads. I can't seem to find a parts blow up that shows those bolts, anybody know off the top of their head know the length , they appear to be 3/8" coarse thread but I don't know if they are a standard length.

You never know what you'll run into till you get inside it. One 3/8" hole is enough. You may want to stick a set of braces on it while you're at it. 1864 would use the GT set. 3" bolts probably are OK, pull the rear cover and you can double check.

Is the carrier different on an 1864? On my 1872, the boss on the top two bolts is longer and takes a 3/8-16 X 3.0 Lg GR8. Something else to consider checking is the cone bearings on the differential. One of mine was chewed up pretty bad.

and about 2" of the bolt that I took out of the hole. |
I just did this repair about a month ago, so it's still fresh in my mind. Just make sure you make a note of the orientation of the ring gear (left or right side of the case) and keep left and right shims separated.

The rear is out of the tractor and apart, I found very little water in the oil, maybe a teaspoon in the whole thing, most was in the axle tubes. Other than the broken bolts it is in good shape. No cracks on the case or axle carriers, bearings are good, no metal in the sump. Three mount bolts are broken off flush with the case hopefully with a little heat to release the threadlocker they will come out.

I have had good luck welding a washer to the broken blot and then welding a nut to the washer.
