1864 Resto-Fication

4 Attachment(s)
After many threats, the 1864 is finally getting re done. Nightow1 got the basics torn down and cleaned with my Hotsy. To start, we are going to pull the axle tubes and drill the drain holes and replace the seals and gaskets.

I have been buying parts for the last couple years in anticipation of this. Tonight i purchased the 3point plate from xmw. Kinda excited!

Got a decent little list started.... should be interesting

J-Mech 06-29-2015 03:27 AM

I can't wait!!!!

Welp i just spent some more money...
I ordered the paint, new hydro springs, spacers, and rear end gaskets from r.f. houtz.

At this point i need to get the frame prepped for paint, do the rear end drain mod, install new gaskets in the rear end, and replace the hydro springs. Once the paint shows up i can begin painting the frame and rear end.

Once this part is completed i get to start on the threepoint and hydraulics!

I did measure the 3pt arms on my 982 and found they are only 2" longer than the gt ones. I don't like how the gt arms can rub on the tires if they are set in the lowest forward most hole. (Keeping the very end of the arms closesed to the tractor as possible) Dont like stabilizer chaines either. SO my plan is to build duplicate sgt arms that are shorter in length, then build the sway blocks that mount to the actual plate.

This will keep the arms close to the plate, away from the tires while allowing me to have the 20" spread that is the industry standard!

No pix but hopefully soon

Grampie 07-01-2015 06:10 AM

Do you have any plans of putting hydraulic front ports on your tractor while it apart? They're pretty nice to have just in case you ever need them. Being as your spending more $$$$$$!!! Sorry! lol :biggrin2: :bigthink:
Looks like your going to have yourself a real workhorse of a machine when your finished with this project.

Yes sir! One set on the front and two sets on the back. Will have 3 valves on the dash. Havent yet decided about putting a fourth in... would be a tight fit!

Plan to build a hydraulic top link like the new magnums come out with, then build a quick-tach.

Getting ahead of myself lol it should b fun

Well my order from xmw arrived today... not gunna lie, i was excited! Waiting on my other order to show up from another place that lost my list...:bigthink:

Anyway, im kinda at a stand still until the paint shows up, but it gives me more time to think about other things i might do to it. I have been looking for a hydraulic cylinder for the rear end.

Keith and I now have the rear end cleaned, drain holes drilled, new gaskets and seals installed, new filter installed, new hydro springs and spacers installed, and a fresh coat of black paint on it

Keith painted the gt axle braces and installed them.

I re c ieved my rf houtz order last week, included is the paint. Going to do a little research on prepping the frame for paint so we can get to my favorite part... hydraulics :beerchug:

Heres pix of the rear end during the drain mod. It was very clean when we pulled it apart!

--Anyone kno where to get a new or reproduction wiring harness for an 1864?

Sam Mac 07-21-2015 08:23 AM

You guys are having way too much fun. Nice work on the axle drains. :beerchug:

Rescue11 06-06-2016 11:40 PM

Finally starting work on this thing again. Got a guy that has it in his shop prepping it for paint. Hopefully the yellow stuff will be out from paint n a few weeks or so.

Still have to visit O'Reillys to get my paint matched for the plastic.

Took a few pix of decals Maple Hunter doesnt have for the 1864, so hopefully they turn out good enough that they can recreate them to offer the public.

I plan to start building my Unlimited cat 0 3pt after the frame is assembled on the rear end.

Sam Mac 06-07-2016 08:54 AM

Looking forward to seeing the Ultra Hitch!:popcorn:

The new yellow looks great!

Workinprogress 07-13-2016 02:09 PM

Any more specifics on the paint?

What type of paint is it?

Did you use hardener?

Spray?

Dirty Steve 07-13-2016 04:30 PM

Gonna be a sweet tractor when you are done. Keep at it!

Haven't got the plastic paint matched yet, with everything else that needs done on the tractor, im not n a huge hurry yet.

What type of paint is it?

Cub cadet yellow from RF Houtz. For your information, to get really good coverage you want to buy two quarts

Did you use hardener?

Yes

Spray?

Dug out my palletized 1864 parts & pieces last weekend. Getting closer to putting it back together.

Also received one of the two 2.5" bore hydraulic cylinders that will provide lift power for my Ultra-cat. Should have unrealistic lifting capacity and travel. Hope I hope, I hope!

J-Mech 12-20-2016 11:28 PM

I'm excited about this! Been hearing about it too much!

Your like me though.... good planning takes time. Time to plan, and time to purchase the parts needed. We'd go broke trying to do it all at once!

Just ordered a set of rear tires tonight. They are identical to the ones Nightow1 has on his 782. These particular tires are labled 26x12-12 manufactured by Duro. However, they are much smaller than the Carlisle true powers and similar, name brand ag lug tires. I have been very impressed by their performance on the 782. They also look more proportional vs the dinky 23" tires, and huge 26" tires respectively. In all reality they measure closer to a 24.5 x 10.5-12...

Nightow1and I took one of his over and stuck it on dads 1864. With nothing more than 1/4" between the tread and fuel tank, the whole shebang (fenders, foot rests, fuel tank etc...) will need to be raised about 1 1/4" to give a reasonable gap. We also talked about putting a "skid plate" under the tank for a little more protection.

Im going to Lincoln Tuesday with the wife to get a bunch of rockshaft and hydraulic stuff from Surplus Center. If it works out, I am going to bring the 1864 pallet into the shop and get the frame bolted to the rearend.

Then I can finally get to work on this thing!

Dirty Steve 02-06-2017 08:40 AM

Surplus Center..... oh this is going to be good!!!

Good looking tires too.

I'll come back when we plan it out better. This was a spur of the moment thing.
My buddy said"Want to ride along and pick up some stuff in NE?" By the list of items I knew I was headed your way. :biggrin2:

No doubt! Looking forward to it!

Went to the surplus center today and got more than i planned... but still managed to be short on a few things.

At anyrate, I decided that its nice having two sets of outlets on the front and back. But if you need to use all 4 alternately with something on the front and back its impossible if they are teed together. So the 18 will have 3 12v selector valves to remedy this "problem" along with the already proven independent deck lift/3pt.

Also decided to install flange bearings for the top rockshaft to help with friction and binding while lifting heavy loads.

I ordered 36 flare nuts and sleeves from Mc Master and it looks like im going to be a couple short. Going to order 100' of 3/8" brake tubing tomorrow.

Heres a picture of todays haul.

Having done all types of hydraulic work on aerial lift trucks for the last 30 years, I'm anxious to see this build! Sounds great!

farmall fred 02-08-2017 10:43 AM

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Just wondering how you make up new lines with the o-ring boss to fit the hyd valves on the cyclops series? In the back of my mind I have been hashing out some ideas for my 1872 project using a triple stack of hyd valves. Problem is making up all of the new lines that I will need. If I do this I can make the tilt steering from the 1864 work. Going to be a great tractor when you are done.

Thank you! Im not a hydraulics expert, but do understand the basics. That along with my plumbing & refrigeration experience, plumbing and bending all the steel lines up does not scare me. Just hope it all works the way I want it to!

My plans are to use the extra cyclops hydraulic lift lines i have purchased to go into the valves and cut the 1/4" rubber hose off so the full i.d of the 3/8" tubing is available for maximum hydraulic flow. My concern is all the straight couplings fitting nicely in that small of an area since I will have 6 of them to contend with.

They do make a tool that makes the orb fledge in steel line, but they are very expensive and I cannot replicate that tight of a bend right passed the connection.

I have used silver solder and a sleeve made from tubing that will slip fit the lines to extend some steel hydraulic lines on several of my antique farm tractors when I could not buy replacements or make replacements due to tight bends. might be an option for you. The sleeves could also be brazed to the tubing.

J-Mech 02-08-2017 10:57 PM

Have you considered tapping the valve block? I've looked at them and I think the hole is deep enough.....

 omg, i totally forgot silver solder!! Probably cuz i only use it for joining copper to steel, not steel to steel. Wow, that will make life so much easier. Thanks! :beerchug:

I have heard of guys doing this... in all reality would probably be the best route to take considering it would eliminate what i consider to be a poor excuse for a hydraulic connection. However, without putting a howlonger on the tractor, idk if it would fit? :bigthink: ... like be able to get the side cover on. Hell, ill do some checking on the tap size & if i have the right tap ill try it out on a crappier valve & then test it with 1200 psi of nitrogen
