Scrap metal prices
 

today i took a load of tractor and mower remains to the scrap yard for recycling,the price is now 3 cents a pound here for light iron. if it gets any lower i will have to pay them to get rid of it. i know its not just here in the northeast where prices dropped alot. you know its bad when the guy who would ride his bike snipping electrical cables off junk for the copper quit.......

Last pile I took to the scrap yard didn't even cover my gas. Don't even ask me about my oil stock. :bash2:

Scrap prices are really low here in Mid Michigan too. Been that way since the fall of 2014. They seem to think it will be this way for a time.

apparently china isnt buying our scrap,i am lucky the scrapyard is close.

Scrap isn't any good here either, I've been setting on a little over 800 lbs of copper wire (extension cords, Christmas lights and the like) and a couple hundred or so pounds of #1 and #2 wire for awhile now.

Building another shed to keep it in will eat into the profit that I would have made from it.

Maybe the low prices for scrap is in our favor as collectors. More people may not be scrapping but choosing to sell their cubs and if they are not running, then those prices will be lower--toward scrap prices, which equates to lower prices for us and others like us. Well, that is my take on the optimistic old adage, "the glass is half full".

800 lbs. of copper, Yosemite Sam....:bigthink:, that is quite a collection and I cannot imagine all of the Christmas lights it took to add up to that.:biggrin2:....and a lot of old penny slugs (reminds me of the song, "Nuttin' for Christmas").

unfortunately the public has no idea scrap is this low,i still see ads for scrap metal either for free or sometimes they want money like they are doing people a favor. i will agree there are less vultures out there looking to make beer money with every piece of metal that can be scrapped. it was bad here years ago,they where stealing guard railing and street signs

The last load of scrap A/C units (metal only) I took back in May was paying .05/LB. Not worth the time pulling them apart anymore. :angry:

What do you get for a coil and compressor? Ive never pulled them apart to junkem... just threw'm in with the water heaters and furnaces:bigthink:

FWIW I just got $32.00 for 160 lbs of battery's. So .20 a lb

I just sold some yesterday. Noticed it was very low also, I needed it out of my way though. The pile was getting too big and weeds were growing in it.

IIRC they told me motors are bringing 0.10/LB & compressors are bringing 0.12/LB. I'll find out soon what coils are bringing when I take a load in.

I always yank the compressors out and separate the coils. There is a different scale for both in my area. The actual sheet metal goes with the other scrap metal.

It's definitely down. Just called 2 places for price on aluminum cans. Place owned by the county is $.30/lb. Private place is $.35/lb. I think last year when I took a load over to the county place it was $.60/lb.:bigeyes:

i had a good laugh this morning,someone posted a ad on cl. for free scrap metal. come to find out the steel pole needs to be dug from the ground,and the cast iron tub removed properly......totally worth 3 cents a pound:GoodLuck:

i dont know if there is a advance auto parts near you but here they were paying $4.00 each and giving store credit. not sure if that changed since the scrap metal collapse,but it might be worth a phone call
