K301...
I am just wondering if all K301 engines are the same. I have an old Jacobson Chief garden tractor that i bought a couple months ago and its got a good running K301, good S/G, looks like same voltage regulator thats on my cub. Basically I picked it up thinking all the parts would work on my 104. And thinking about building back blade. Any input is appreciated and welcomed. What every ones thoughts on back blade vs front blade?

If the crank is right, you could swap oil pans to mount it. Just a thought. :bigthink: Do you have the original engine?
What are your plans for the blade? Dirt or snow? |

There were other small differences, like position of dipsticks, heatshields, etc.....but nothing that could not be changed.

Not 100% sure but I believe Jacobsen used wide base Kohler engines in their machines.

Thanks every one. Maybe ill get the old jacobsen runnin this weekend and try to sell it to someone for plow tractor this fall. And just look around for a back up engine for my 104. The k241 came to me with a knock and as my luck would have it i started it up to move it around back side of my house and when i shut it off, the rod broke. Maybe i will rebuild that one this winter. So the 104 will be all original again.

Here is a link to a good comparison of the Kohler K Series blocks and oil pans , if you do not mind going to a " RED FORUM "
http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic...-block-styles/ You can use a certain wide base block in a Cub , but it takes some work. You can use both wide base blocks , but one is easier to modify than the other. If you have a block with no cut outs cast into the base part , just cut the wide base cast parts off and bolt your Cub pan to it. A JD 300 actually has a wide base block with a small base pan on it , they use the wide base parts to bolt the engine down. You can use the wide base block with the cut outs in them , but you have to cut off the wide base parts and have the remainder of the cut outs filled in with epoxy or welded , if you know someone that can weld cast. I think i would skip this style and look for another engine. !! If you find yourself needing to swap a shallow oil pan to an engine that has a deep pan and a long dipper rod , cut just enough of the dipper off to clear the shallow pan and round off the dipper. I know some people will say i will just wait and find a Cub specific block/engine , nothing wrong with that. But pullers around my area buy up everything that says CUB CADET on it and supply is short. Or , you find the person that has a tree growing their Cub and still says , " I am going to fix it up , don't want to sell it " Or you have a wide base engine that runs absolutely perfect and your Cub's engine is wore out and your eight kids all need new school shoes .. I have a k301 in my 1211 that was from a john Deere. Only difference is the crank diameter and length. The crank has a bronze bushing so that the pto will work with it. The bronze sleeve I bought from McMaster Carr and had a machinist at work cut the slot for the keyway and I bought oversize key stock to use on it. I shimmed the end of the crank with washers and shims. All works fine! I also have a k321 that is john Deere spec that I ground the pto side smooth so that the pto would mount flush and I drilled and tapped the block for mounting the pto. I did this against the advice of others, but ran it all summer last year and it worked perfectly! I keep it as a spare engine, not bad for $50!!

"Necessity is the mother of invention "[/QUOTE] I actually have 7- 4girls three teenage, one thats 9 that thinks she is 19 and 3 boys. So yes i pinch pennys so tight you need a can opener to get them apart! I really appreciate the helpful tips! I am not a virgin with these engines but havent had to frankenstine anything yet and pretty decent at fab work, if you check out "my own sleeve hitch" under implements and attachments, I put the k301 and hydro lift on the 104 because liks i said the 241 has broken crank and i havent had time to rebuild so wasnt quite sure what i would find. And was hoping i could get lucky as i picked up the jacobsen cheap! |
Just so long as you understand that the wide base blocks don't work in Cubs....
I have 5 kids. 2 of my own, and 3 that I "inherited". Ages 10, 8, 7, 6, and 4.... wham, wham, wham..... not gonna be fun in the "teen" years. 2 girls and 3 boys. I hear you on money being tight. |

Thanks Jon, yeah i see i am gonna be rebuilding my k241 to keep around for a spare engine. My k301 runs great, is more than enough power to do what we ask of her! But she does smoke a little puff when first started and uses a little oil. Thats why i had asked someone if it would be a good idea to run a little lucas in it for hard workin hot summer days that we might get a hand full of here in upstate N.Y Someone told me once that boys were cheaper to raise than girls, they Lied!!! They just want differant stuff. Girls want clothes, new dress for every school dance and shoes, and make up... that list dont end. The boys think they need just as many toys as dad! But they dont want old tired toys to show alittle love and make new again, they expect top of the line toys that when they get broke they want dad to fix and dont understand that most sh/# built today is built and forgotten- throw away! My boys are 5,10 and 12 so they are old enough to start earning them toys and actually starting to take interest in helping work on,fix stuff and build things... for a couple more years til they take interest in girls... |
