Just In Case

7 Attachment(s)
Anyone cares what my latest project is. It's this J.I. Case 120.
Picked this up awhile ago with the intentions of just keeping it around to add to the collection. But after I found out it's a one year only tractor, I figured another "face lift" was in order.
Not going to keep posting, cause I think it's frowned on, being we are a Only Cub Cadet website, and I'm cool with that. Just wanted to show you all the latest project, and will report back when it's complete. "IF" it takes as long as the Original, it may take some time.:biggrin2:

darkminion_17 07-01-2016 08:16 PM

I will keep my eye out for that just in Case.....

olds45512 07-01-2016 08:35 PM

I don't think anybody would mind you posting progress on this project, its not green so its ok with me.:biggrin2:

Sam Mac 07-01-2016 08:37 PM

Todd

Feel free to post about the Case. I want to see another Zippy restore project. Got your back on this one. :beerchug:

bocephus1991 07-01-2016 08:56 PM

Post away! Those old cases have character! That's when they still built machines to last!

Shotgun Wedding 07-01-2016 09:16 PM

Yes to all the above! That is a great tractor, it will be good to witness what a true artist can do to it. Cant wait for the pics!

olds45512 07-01-2016 09:41 PM

WE WANT PICS,WE WANT PICS,WE WANT PICS,WE WANT PICS.:biggrin2:

Terry C 07-01-2016 10:11 PM

Post away Todd! Good luck with that hood :biggrin2:
That thing has character. It's going to be cool :beerchug:

Lanceskene 07-01-2016 10:52 PM

Ya Ditto what those guys said.... I'ld like to see the progress too;)

Lanceskene 07-01-2016 10:55 PM

You even got the Old Sam eagle, those are often missing... but new ones are avail.

ACecil 07-02-2016 12:08 AM

Nice Case, Todd! I guess, I won't post since I'm going green. :biggrin2:

jaynjeep 07-02-2016 12:59 AM

Please keep posting

Todd,

Your projects are interesting to follow no matter what they are. Please keep posting. I'd love to follow just like I did your O facelift!:beerchug::beerchug:

I have a friend that has one... It's an interesting machine.. looks to be well built and simple. I'm pretty sure its a 120 also. He got it from a guy that had the Case dealership here in the late 50's thru the late 60's.

WE LIKE PICTURES... I don't think anybody will run you off unless you start with the green machines!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Really I like them all... just don't tell my green buddies that I admitted to it! :biggrin2::biggrin2:

Allen,

we are all good even though you went the other way!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

I think I see Red, yellow and white in your future.!:beerchug::beerchug:

zippy1 07-02-2016 01:05 AM

Thanks for allowing it guys, just didn't want to pee in anyone's Cheerios.
I know we all like the old iron GT's, and I enjoy (crave) the comments you all leave, and to be truthful, I was really going to miss that by doing this 120.
So as long as it's cool with everyone, I'll take you all along on the journey.:beerchug:
I can say, they are pretty crude, plain Jane tractors. It was missing the two front side panels, belt guard, grill and seat pan and upholstery. Got hooked up with a Classic Tractor Fever regular, who knows everything there is to know about the Colt/Case tractors, and has them all in his collection.
After talking with him, he reproduces all the aforementioned parts I was missing, well now I've got that covered.:beerchug:
Transmission is a four speed. Neutral is up/down, instead of side to side like a normal tractor:biggrin2:. And the 1st, 2nd is together on the forward left, reverse is straight across to the right, 3rd is rearward left with 4th rearward right.
Yes it's got the Ole Abe medallion. The crudest draglink and tie rod configuration I've seen... The old Kohler K241A runs great, and the trans seemed to work well, so...
Again, I'm glad I get to share this "facelift" with the family.:biggrin2::bigeyes::bigthink::beerchug:
Oh, almost forgot, no specific hardware this time... Just go down to the bolts bin to get new hardware.

Dirty Steve 07-02-2016 06:02 AM

I too would like to see your progress on this one.

Billy-O 07-02-2016 06:38 AM

Zip.......I followed your restoration of the O with great interest. You did a beautiful job. And I will be very interested in following your restoration of the Case because I'm sure you'll do just as beautiful job with the Case!

I see you place a carboard under the Case because it peed on the floor.......it is yellow!:biggrin2:

cubcadet 07-02-2016 06:49 AM

Very nice case Todd, looking forward to the facelift.

Oak 07-02-2016 08:57 AM

Well the way I see it, Case owns IH so it's still related to the Cubbies. Keep posting with lots of pics.:beerchug:

Todd,

I like crude and plain... because it usually works well and if you have a problem you can often make the parts to fix it!!:beerchug::beerchug:

I can't wait to see the Case facelift!!

Good point Todd (Oak) brought up... Case and IH are family now so you pretty much have to share this with us!!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Did a little to the J.I. the last few days. Holy smoke, this is the dirtiest differential fluid I've ever drained out. Chunks.:bigthink: You can see the gunk that's leaking out the shifter.
Got the frame and diff separated to begin sandblasting of the frame and other parts. Fun,fun.:beerchug:

IHinIN 07-03-2016 08:35 PM

Looking forward to seeing the end result. I've always liked the looks of the old Case tractors.

J-Mech 07-03-2016 08:39 PM

:popcorn::WWP::WWP:

I'll be following!

jaynjeep 07-03-2016 09:59 PM

Looking good Todd!:beerchug::beerchug:

I love all the tear down and reassembly!.... It's all the prep, cleaning and blasting that is NO FUN! :bash2::bash2:

Rear end looks kind of like an old Peerless unit... Did Case build these tractors and drive components or were they built by someone else and sold as Case?:bigthink:

zippy1 07-03-2016 11:37 PM

I've not done a bunch of research on them. I do know Case bought out the Colt corporation and basically used the same tractor for sometime, and just painted them their color.
I must say, even if I wasn't a diehard Cub Cadet enthusiast, they aren't built as well as our tractors. I don't mean they are junk, just not as clean, heavy duty:bigthink:
The looks of the tractor is what drew me to it in the beginning. I didn't know it was a "rare" bird, being a one year only tractor. But there is a Colt that from what I understand is basically the same.
I've already got Jeff in PA making parts for it.
Again, thanks for letting me in the door with it to share the progress. :beerchug:

ACecil 07-04-2016 12:02 PM

Looking forward to your updates, Todd!

That DOES look like the rear end from a Deere 110 or an old Craftsman. We actually put one from a Craftsman in a Deere, only had to change the shifter. I kind of figured those Case machines had something a LOT beefier, guess I was wrong.

John,

I knew I had seen that rear somewhere before! Now that you jogged my memory I had an old craftsman that had one of those transaxles!:beerchug:

It received alot of abuse and never tore it up so they must be pretty tough:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Todd,

Do you have a deck or any other attachments for Old Abe?:bigthink: :biggrin2:

Yeah there is a deck Jay, but I don't think I'll be doing anything with it. It would be "weird" cutting with it as the discharge chute is on the left side.:bigthink: Plus the front clutch for the deck isn't in the best of condition, so I'll keep it for parts for the drive clutch on the back of the engine as they are the same. Just In Case.:biggrin2:

No I don't know him. The only guy I ever talked with that knows a bunch about them was Steve Guidner. He has them all, Colt and Case.

Worked on the hood and grill shell today. Got my parts from Jeff in PA, fit like a glove. The original "hood studs" were worn out, so sent Jeff a picture of what I needed, and a couple days later here they are:beerchug:
Also the hood just rested on these studs and wore out the sheet metal, so I welded washers on the inside of the hood to sturdy things up a little.:bigthink: Little at a time, don't want to rush it.:biggrin2:

cubcadet 07-10-2016 08:16 PM

Very nice work Jeff and Todd as always, I see an IH bolt.:biggrin2::beerchug:

"Dizzy"? Oh, busy. Either one I will answer too.:biggrin2: It should for awhile. Just wait to see what I'm dragging home next... You will think I fell out of a stupid tree and hit every branch twice.

Keep up the good work, Todd!

jaynjeep 07-11-2016 10:40 PM

Looking great as always and keep them posts and pictures coming!!:beerchug:
