Newbie and a 782D
5 Attachment(s)
Having found a diesel Cub and then finding this forum, I jumped in the deep end and started a total restoration. I've done several farm tractors and a couple of antique tractor trailer rigs, but this is my first Cub. I plan on doing the gear reduction starter and the glow plug relay updates as well as a steering column rebuild. Everything else will get cleaned inspected and painted with repairs as needed. I've seen some mighty purty tractors on here, I hope I can keep up my end! Here's where I'm at so far ----

Let the fun begin!!
|
Nice 782D! Good luck with your restoration.
|
Looks like you have started out good. Looking forward to your progress pic's. Welcome to Only Cub Cadets.

Well- a little progress has been made. The fuel tank and radiator have been cleaned and all the black color parts have been bead blasted and repainted. One color down and three to go, Kubota blue, and IH red and white. My wife has been "impressed" that either UPS or FedEx has been to the house every day last week delivering restoration parts. The fun continues!

Next up will be to pull the rear axle from the frame and perform the clean, service and repaint sequence. Yes it's black, and the gun has been cleaned and put away too. Am I the only one that always forgets at least one part that needed to be painted a certain color when you thought you were done?

You've been busy! Thanks for the update and pics.

Saturday seems to be the day I get the most time in my shop and today's project was to get the engine back in the sub-frame and hang all the rebuilt accessories. Valves have been adjusted and new glow plugs installed. It got a couple of coats of genuine Kubota blue paint to freshen the look. All new hoses for coolant and fuel. Still looking for a 7/8 " heater hose for the lower radiator hose. PTO and fan shaft have new bearings and a gear reduction starter installed. Radiator has been boiled and pressure tested. No turbo ---- YET! Can't wait to get this thing back together and make some smoke! Here's a couple shots of the "power pod"
|
wow , looks awesome ..I`m not familiar with diesels so looking forward to seeing the smoke :beerchug:
... and cant wait for the red paint also.. :biggrin2: |

Looks great! Keep the pictures coming. Where did you find the radiator hoses?
|
Frank, I'm thinking some people are using a Kubota RTV(Utility Vehicle)hose and cutting it but I can't remember where I saw that.:bash2:
|
Here's what I used after finding this information in the engine section of this forum.
Upper radiator hose, Cub part# IH-1286631-C1 / 735-3020 suitable replacement: Kubota part# K7311-85150, made for the Kubota RTV utility vehicles. The 7311-85150 hose has a 3" long "bell" section at the radiator end of the hose to accommodate a bigger radiator outlet. You just cut this bigger end off and the remaining piece is a perfect fit. I bought mine from Kubota Parts Depot for $22.55 plus shipping. As for the lower hose, so far discussion has been to use 7/8" heater hose, but it is hard to locate. I am toying with the idea of having heavy wall tubing bent and use straight rubber hose to couple at each end. I may also try to find pre-bent shapes and weld them together. I've built headers for performance cars and this would be a similar process. If I do, I'll post pictures and list the components. Stan |
what kind of prep for paint did you do on the engine?
I will be pulling mine soon and I may paint it,not sure... |
Looking good!

DarkMinion - after removing the D600 from the tractor and sub-frame, I sealed all the openings and thoroughly hot water pressure washed the entire motor. Next step was to use a small wire brush in a drill to knock off any peeling paint and loose scale that I could reach without tear-down. After another quick rinse and blow dry, I painted the engine using genuine Kubota paint purchased on E-bay. $11.99 a can, and didn't use half the can. The paint covers exceptionally well and drys quickly with a nice shine.

Great job on the engine, looks great in fresh paint!
What are your plans for the wiring harness? I'm working on an 882D now and the wires are brittle and cracked. My thought was to replace each one with an identical new wire of the same gage and color. Its going to be a long haul! I'll enjoy seeing your new updates as you progress. |
Your doing a great job, that's a cool tractor! FYI I just finished up a D650 in a kubota tractor and got parts from kumar bros, great customer service. Looking forward to seeing it all wrapped up!

Here are a few options.
I would check with Mike first. His stuff is top notch. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=34457 More options. http://www.porchelectric.com/ihcub.html http://www.cngcoinc.com/pages/custom.../Product/51439 |

There was some discussion earlier in this thread about the substitute upper radiator hose, Kubota part# K7311-85150, that needs to be modified. I took my hose back off and snapped a couple of pics so everyone can understand what needs to be done.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the tractor. This place is age eat source of information and everyone is eager to help! Good luck.

After stripping the frame to bare bones, I found I have an issue with the implement lift. In the picture you see the cross shaft in the frame and two arms, one offset and the other J shaped. This is the attachment point for the rod end of the lift cylinder. My question is the the arm that is J shaped appears to have a place where it can be bolted to the other arm, and there also is a roll pin hole in the J arm but it is seized to the shaft. Should it be free to rotate on the shaft, be bolted together or pinned? I've applied a little heat and have managed to move the J arm a little, but it will need to be pressed apart to get it to move freely if it is supposed to.

OK - now what!
|
Yes, it should rotate independent. It is the "float". A bolt can be installed to give it down pressure, although, I'm not sure why anyone would want to, and the rarely do, as you find that the cylinder is strong enough to tear things up or bend them. They are no fun to free when they are stuck.
Go buy some Kroil and let it do it's thing. Still may not be able to free it up. Good luck. |
BugJunkie - my wiring harness is in exceptionally good shape except for a hacked area bypassing the safety circuits of the PTO switch. Using a wiring diagram I found on-line, I cut out the cobbed up sections, and soldered in new wires of the proper gauge and color. It's a straight forward repair and pretty simple circuits. I think I would repair your harness if it isn't totally destroyed.

That 782D is gonna be SWEET!!

Thanks for the suggestions on dealing with the implement shaft. I am a believer in the magic powers of both Kroil and PB Blaster, but I am not always a patient man. When it comes to cautiously heating, tapping, apply oil and repeating the process until the part is free again, I usually get carried away with the tapping part. So knowing my limits, I took the whole frame to work and used the hydraulic press and some very good blocking to support everything while I applied some pressure on the shaft. A little heat and 11 TONS of pressure and it finally came free. After cleaning all the pieces, they slip fit within each other again. Given that there already were two holes in the bushing section of the J arm, I tapped one to 1/8" NPT and installed a grease fitting. It won't seize again!
Onward to sanding the frame and some high build primer! I need to see RED! |
You can't use that spring pin you installed. A spring pin is not the same as a spirol pin. The spirol pins will handle more load. You will just break the spring pin in short order.

Thanks- I'll change them out to spirol-loc pins. These were the pins that were in it when I tore it down.

Made some more progress. Frame has been sanded to remove all rust, scale and most of the old paint. Today it got two coats of high build epoxy primer, I'm pleased with the results as even the pitted sections are smooth. After some cure time, I'll wet sand it to break the surface and shoot it IH Red. The frame was in great shape, no cracks and all threaded holes had good threads. The only problem so far has been the implement shaft arm and that's been addressed. These little guys are tough. No significant issues after 32 years!
|
Hats off! You are doing it right. Keep up.the good work!
|
Wow! Impressive work! The 782D may be my favorite Cub of all. So hard to choose. Lol
Thanks for sharing...looking forward to seeing the progress. |
Looking good! Thanks for the pic and update.
