So it looks like I'm getting an Olds

My former neighbor and good friend just offered me a fantastic deal on a very rare Olds engine. It was made by the Olds Gasoline Engine Works and according to Roger, it was made about 1907. It's a 5 - 7 hp hit and miss engine and it's all there. Fuel pump, original muffler, carb and all the little bits and pieces. There is even some original paint and pin striping left.

Here's a couple pictures.

Thanks Sam. I'll have a lot of help on this one from Roger and my friends out at Rough & Tumble.

That's nice, Jeff! Congrats on your find.

Sweet addition Jeff. Congrats.:beerchug:
When you get it going, we want a video of it. Pop, Pop, Pop, or something like that.:biggrin2:

VERY NICE!
I owned one a little larger than that for about 6 hours. Long story short a collector down in Georgia was selling a bunch of 1 1/2 hp Deeres at the Denton, NC show. We were talking and he told me he collected rarer engines, the Deeres were just trading stock. I told him I knew where one was, in rough shape. He told me if I would take him to it and he bought it, that he'd give me a Deere for a finders fee. Long story short I picked it up, he came through town that evening and we made the switch. Best I can remember it was 12 or 15p, model A I think, fully enclosed crankcase, headless, with heavier flywheels--think it was for generator service. Anyway, wish I had it now but that was 30 years ago and I had no means of finding/affording the missing parts--he wound up with a carb for it out of Canada. Anyway, got a little long winded, just triggered a story I hadn't thought about for a long time.

Looks great, Jeff! Does this have anything to do with the Blue Mountain show this weekend?

Shotgun Wedding 07-17-2016 10:44 AM

That is pretty cool. What are your plans? Static display?

Berwil 07-17-2016 11:34 AM

That's cool Jeff! It looks like it was in good company. Can't wait to see it running! :beerchug:

Strictly coincidence. This has been in the works for months

It will be at it's new home at http://www.roughandtumble.org/ It will be disassembled enough to check the bearings and to make sure the oil passages are working correctly. Clean up will only remove dirt and grime taking extra care to leave what is left of the original paint and striping.

Since it's all there, it will be running again for the folks who visit R&T plus I will put up YouTube videos as Olds videos are extremely scarce.

You have to be careful since there is plenty of "pinch points". One nice thing on the Olds is that it has a fold away handle on the flywheel for starting. That way if it starts before you're ready, the handle simply folds back into the recess.

Thanks everyone :beerchug:

Thanks Lew. I'm pretty excited about this one, it's a rare engine.

Very neat Jeff, at some point I will make the R&T show just to see your stuff.

I picked up the Olds today. :biggrin2:

It still has the original Olds decal on the back of the rear casting and some of the pin striping left.

Sam Mac 11-26-2016 08:03 AM

Nice rigging job my friend. :beerchug:

ol'George 11-26-2016 08:54 AM

Jeff,
My "little Jumbo" has that same fold away handle.
I wonder about that, as they were made not far from Lansing, in Saginaw area.:bigthink:

cubcadet 11-26-2016 09:48 AM

Nice engine Jeff, congrats!:beerchug:

Cool engine.
I'm a little disappointed, when I read the title of this thread I thought you got a Tim. :biggrin2:

thanks, they did a nice job rigging the engine when they lifted it off the trailer today with a 8000 lb lift forktruck. Paul set it down and put the forks under the original skids to bring it in the building.

Once we set it in place, I removed the head ( I knew it needed a head gasket ) and then oiled and greased it up. I pulled the connecting rod cap to make sure the babbitt bearings were in good shape. The bore looks great and everything moves easily.

I pulled the water jacket to clean that. I used water to remove the bird droppings and the 111 year old paint still looks great. Here's where it sits at the back wall of the Willock Building at Rough and Tumble.

Great find Jeff! Congratulations. Several hobbies ago I was into the hit and miss engines. I had a few small ones but none as nice as yours. :beerchug:
