Sediment Bowl

What's the proper way to tighten the sediment bowl on the gas tank? When I screw it in, it's not tight, but you can't go another complete turn. It is leaking because of this. I just noticed this yesterday, when I saw gas on my new paint. The paint wasn't hard enough, and it just rubbed off. I know there's a way, but I can't figure it out. :bash2: BTW, this is on my O.

There should be flats next to the threads to put a wrench on. The threads are aluminum and you should be able to get another turn on it with a wrench. Make sure to thread tape it as well and wrap the tape in the direction of the threads otherwise it will just unwind the tape.:beerchug:

Yes, I can get a wrench on it. What kind of tape do you use?

Teflon thread tape . Any hardware store will have it. It's about a buck a roll. About two full wraps with the tape and you should be good to go.

Thank you very much. Can't ruin anymore of my new paint.:biggrin2: When tightening the bowl, there's not a chance of messing the gas tank up are there?

The only way you'll hurt the tank is if you over tighten it.

ambrola 09-24-2016 10:32 AM

I think the tape will help a little. I will just have to drain the tank, and take the bowl off and try again.

When you wrap the teflon tape make sure you wrap it tight and wrap it in the direction the threads are going.:beerchug:

Also make sure the tape doesn't cover the bottom of the hole where the gas comes out.

Or..when looking at the end of "pipe" put tape on clockwise.

While the paint is off the outlet hole of tank, examine it very closely with a magnifying glass, etc. for a crack radiating from the threads.
Or the steel plate solder-to-tank being the culprit.

Thanks, I will do that. I am sure the leak is coming from the bowl. It's very loose. You can move it with your fingers. Does anyone make the brass fuel line? Mine has a rubber hose on it now. Since I will be taking the fuel out, it would be the perfect time to fix that?

just keep the rubber line, the hard line is more trouble than its worth.

Unless your going for a show quality resto as others have said keep the rubber. This is what I have on my O. I like the clear stuff, you can see if the fuel is flowing.

Mine is black and cracking. Now I will go with the clear. Thanks for that.

I got the fuel line at O'Rielly's off the lawn mower parts rack if that helps. The brass fittings came from Lowes if memory serves.

ambrola 09-25-2016 07:12 PM

I have the fittings on the tractor. I can just reuse them?

Sam Mac 09-25-2016 07:49 PM

You should be able to reuse them, just posted the info if you needed it.

darkminion_17 09-25-2016 07:53 PM

Sam the man,is the plastic line happy with gas? I ask as I have seen some that yellow and crack over time, especially where it has a bend in it.

cubcadet 09-25-2016 07:58 PM

I have remade the metal fuel lines out of brake line and some Ferrells with good luck.

Lew so far it's doing just fine. It is fuel line. It is or was sold at O'Rielly's in the lawn mower parts section.

I hear that copper can become fatigued and crack over time. From my understanding steel or brake line would be best.
