As if I didn't have enough to do

Saw a CL add for a 124 Cadet for $200. No pics in the ad. Sent a reply to get a couple pics and to see if it ran. Yep, it ran, didn't have a deck but did have a homemade belly mount blade and hydraulic lift. Hmmm, my curiosity was up. Tried to get up with the guy, no response. Finally called me at 3 on Sat afternoon. I was right in the middle of sharpening the blades on my 982. Talked a bit but I wasn't too interested being that late in the day. Guy said he worked out of town and was leaving on Sun. Just before hanging up the phone he said he had other Cadets---I really wish he wouldn't have said that. I couldn't help myself but I asked what else. All I remember hearing was a 782 with a blown out muffler. Next thing I know I'm hooking up a trailer and grabbing some loading boards. Only had to go about 5-6 miles. First thing I did was to check out the 782. Cranks and runs good but the carb has issues. Hydro seems to work OK. Its an IH built machine that the original owner decided would look better painted yellow. On to the 124, runs pretty good (needs carb work), tranny shifts fine although the clutch is out of adjustment or screwed up---lets just say it works but needs help. Anyway, those 2 Cadets were begging me to take them home (paid less than double the price of the 124) Paid the guy and my kid promptly hoped on the 124--he seems to think the blade will be great fun:biggrin2:
I've got a 682 with 2 well ventilated engines, decent seat, replacement mowing deck so I can probably put the 782 back to mowing grass with minimal effort. Need to get a donor muffler quick--that 782 makes more noise than a half dozen Harleys.

Maybe these will go, ,maybe they will stay. Pops was a little enthused about them so that's good enough reason to bring them home and play with them.

Congrats on the tractors John!

The serial number on that 782 says it was made in the second to last month of machines produced by IH. It is very possible that it was repainted yellow and white before it was ever sold.

Sounds like you had a great day. Congrads.

Great finds and steals!

I don't think so,looks repainted by an unprofessional. Why would CCC repaint it as they sold red ones also.

Nice score Mr. hall.I like how you only went 5 miles to get them.

Nice score, congrats.:beerchug:

Seller said it was a PO repaint, said the guy like the yellow scheme better.
This fellow also had a nice 126 with a deck in his building. Had a rather nice repaint and ags. If I would have had more cash on me I may could have talked him in to selling that one as well. This guy had all sorts of old stuff, he was a collector. Based on his prices he buys cheaper than me.

Could have been sold by an outdoor power dealer. Weren't all the red ones sold through IH, and the yellow through the outdoor power dealers?

Not saying it was..... but could have been. I see paint chips on the hood that don't appear to have red under them. :bigthink:

Dealers don't usually have pro paint guys. When I worked for IH sometimes we had to paint tractor hoods or other "cosmetic" parts. You'd be surprised what some people would accept as a "good job".

I think the dealer dad worked for had yellow and red ones at the same time. They lost their tractor and equipment sales contract but retained a parts contract, I think this happened prior to the 82 series but am not sure. I do remember plenty of red 82 series Cadets that they sold.

Congrats on some fine aquisitions!:beerchug:

J-Mech 09-25-2016 09:37 PM

John, you posted that it was a PO repaint while I was typing.

It is a late SN machine though, and a good score!

jaynjeep 09-25-2016 10:01 PM

John,

I have the same problem with Cub Cadets following me home! I see the ad, try to resist and then feel like I need to give them a good home!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Congrats on the new machines, John!

Tom4981 09-26-2016 07:42 AM

I'd consider it a steal for $200....you did well.

mortten 09-26-2016 08:10 AM

A good deal on a hydro lift and a free tractor to go with it.

john hall 09-26-2016 04:45 PM

So without turning this into a what its worth thread, just how hard to come by is the hydraulic lift for a narrow frame? I kind of figured with the ags on back a collector would pay $3-500 for the whole tractor assuming it runs OK. Still have no idea what I'm going to do with it, the 782 however is probably going to get set back up to mow grass.

darkminion_17 09-26-2016 05:19 PM

Pump is worth $ 450 with the rockshaft.
Just my 45,000 cents.....

:RollEyes2::RollEyes2:

Man those things are really going up in price.... Getting a little ridiculous I think.
Wish I had a few to sell.....

jaynjeep 09-26-2016 07:12 PM

John,

From my very limited experience with the narrow frame hydraulic lift... it is likely worth as much or more removed from the tractor and sold separately... You can probably get 350 to 450 easily for the pump and rockshaft mainly because it can be shipped in a box to someone who is looking for one...
Attached to the tractor it will limit your market to a much smaller radius.

The same applies to most of the other sought after accessories for our cubs... (fenders, lights, weights, creepers three points etc)... they always cost more separately yet you can buy them on a tractor for little to no more.

Just my thoughts... which may not be worth much!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Agreed! That's why eBay is so brutal on prices. Obviously it's convenient, and a worldwide marketplace.

Ebay isn't brutal on prices because it's a worldwide market, or convenient.... it's brutal on prices because there are no rules. Anyone can sell anything for any price they want, and anyone can buy. Just compare prices.... a Cub 1000 for sale in Pennsylvania for $450... and one for sale in Maryland for $1500. Identical looking machines and both run. Ebay is a sellers market. BUYERS BEWARE!!!

so there should be rules that dictate the price i ask for an item i own?

RedHawCadet 09-26-2016 10:09 PM

How is it not brutal because of convenience? I wonder how many people have never been to a swap meet or tractor or engine show and can see how much things go for. Guess I'll wait till you have hard to find parts for sale for nothing.

john hall 09-26-2016 10:14 PM

Ok, so the hydraulic setup is a tad bit pricey it appears--probably driven by the "cool" factor. But how rare/odd is it? I've only seen a couple older Cadets with one, and only one with electric lift, so I could say around here its unusual. I'm guessing these were more popular in snowy areas, and maybe areas where rear-mount tillers were common?

J-Mech 09-26-2016 10:21 PM

They aren't rare at all.... they show up everywhere. But, it seems more and more are getting pulled and put up for sale for the "value" not any other reason. Price is driven by ebay sellers claiming how "rare" they are. There is almost never a time when you can't find one for sale.

John,

They are unusual around here also... I have only ever seen two in person... both those tractors came from up north.. I suspect both had snow blowers or blades on them at one time... I'm sure they were an expensive option even 45 years ago when these tractors were new. I would consider them to be rare... but maybe not so for other regions of the country?:bigthink:

zippy1 09-26-2016 10:41 PM

Well they are "rare" in these parts, OR those that have them aren't putting them up for sale.
I personally don't give a hoot for the "cool" factor as much as the convenience of having it as a tool to make life on the seat easier with implements that are heavy. Makes life much easier lifting a tiller out of the ground.:beerchug:

RedHawCadet 09-26-2016 10:54 PM

I have only ever seen two, one at at a show and the one I got for my 73. I wanted it for ease of implement use and the fact it was an accessory.:beer2:

I didn't really explain what I meant... so I'll try.

To answer your question: No... but yes.

In the "market" there is suggested retail value. In the car market we have KBB and NADA. But for used stuff it's whatever...

My frustration is you can literally go to Wal-Mart, buy a T shirt for $8 and put it up on ebay for $15 and some idiot will come along and buy it. Suggested retail price does not apply to Ebay. I have seen $15 items for sale for $30 and everything in between. The frustration I have with Cub parts in particular is that the price is dictated by what people will pay on ebay.

Example: I have seen Cub Cadet transaxles for sale for $1000 on ebay with the seller claiming how "rare" they are. Come on. We all know that a 3 speed rear end is not uncommon. We all know that they aren't worth $1000.... but then they sell it because someone didn't research. Suddenly the rear ends are starting to sell for more and more because people will buy them for the absurd price. My point is, just because one sells on ebay for high $$ does not mean that it is worth that price. I swear to God, I could put a gallon of gas on ebay for $5, claim that gas prices are going up and some idiot would pay it.

Just to prove my point here is a check valve for a hydro that we all know can be bought new for about $80:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cub-Cadet-Tr...r7iILRexmgIxNQ

As a note: The seller "quietline" has a hydro pump for sale for $450. I have at least 3 or 4 sitting around. I'll sell any of them for that price if anyone wants one.
Same with the relief valves. I'll gladly sell mine for the mere price of $750. I mean, according to ebay, that's a steal!!!

All the swap meets I've been to had items for sale for MUCH less than I was finding online. I'm more of a buyer, not a seller. I've been happy with all the prices I've paid, but I was patient, and didn't just buy the first one that came along.

john hall 09-26-2016 11:01 PM

Thanks for confirming they are kind of odd, yet not impossible to find. No intention of splitting up the machine and pump, at least not now and knowing me, probably never unless the rest of the machine turns out to be JUNK. Just wanted to know what I had.
