Another 169 redo

I got this 169 in the summer of 2015 not running. Owner said he went to start it, it popped off, backed fired, and died. It would not restart. He said it was seized.
So I finally did some investigating, I got the motor out. I removed the pan and checked the balance gears all were good. Then removed the flywheel checked for a mouse nest, no issue found there either. Then I removed the head and found that the PO had left the the spark plug off and put side at that. Now the piston is seized. I sprayed some blaster around the piston, loosened it up and remove it.
Though did be able to save it but, after bonding it out and still being able to catch my finger nail on it, is not going to work. Looks like an over haul to the engine is required.
Pics to come

You should proofread......

Wow that's terrible, auto correct on my phone is to blame and me for not proof reading.

"The previous owner left the spark plug out and water had gotten in."
"Thought I would be able to save it. After honing it out found was not going to be able too. Had to much rust where the rings contacted the cylinder."

Thanks for pointing that out

While I was tearing this engine down I found out it was a kohler short block with only 12 fine.
Oh well.

Another issue I had with this thing was marking its territory all over my shop, so I drained the hytrans and remove the assembly from the tractor. Then removed the hydro from the diff found the for my seal all wet and a bolt missing from the hydro case.
I'm going to remove the trans assembly from a parts 149 and I think I'm going to use that hydro but the diff from the 169, then I'll transfer over hydralic lift too. :biggrin2::biggrin2:

While I had the rear end out I figure it would be a good idea to change the leaking axle seals and axle tube gaskets.

I think so, but don't hold me to it. Had a couple out myself, but in most cases just never paid attention. Just looked up the part numbers and called Gene to order them...
"Are we having any fun yet?":beerchug:

Remember this guy Todd?
Pulled it out of the back of my shed, man was it buried. But I got it out. Time for it to donate again!

I got it out in about 30 minutes. My best time ever.
This one was filled with atf, I had a Deere 316 that had atf which was an acceptable to Deere. Any ways when I pulled it out the cork gasket came off in one piece and probably would have sealed for another 10 years. Of course the ones that won't get used again have the good parts.
Also ordered gaskets and seals today, profit be a couple weeks cause I'm cheap and didn't want to pay for shipping. My dealer has to have a certain amount on order to get free shipping.

Yeah I remember that 149. Dragged it home the same time as the 107. Both sat out in a pine plantation for who knows how many years.
Glad it's of some use for a parts tractor.
Keep up the good work.:beerchug:

Oh this 149 is a life saver (a 169 life saver). I've used a few parts off of it already.:beerchug:

Hey, got my phone call today. Parts are in, so now I can start putting the 782 back together.:beerchug: May be calling for a hand putting the rear back in, we'll try it alone first. You know how I at least want to give it a shot.:bigthink:

I've been working on the 169 every now and then during the summer. I got the rear end sealed up and installed. Got the motor bored to .030. Also got the hydralic lift installed. Then I put a set of tri rib skinnys up front.
Now that the weather has cooled off I should have some more time to get this thing going.

zippy1 11-01-2017 10:18 PM

Little work here and there, is better than none at all.:beer2: Ask me how I know...:biggrin2:
