Chainsaw pics and some custom items

Hey I don't know if any of you guys work with, (I'm sure you do) chainsaws or on chainsaws, but here's some things I just thought I would share. I've been a Stihl fan for along time and know my way through a lot of their stuff(10 yrs). I also make some custom parts for mid range to bigger pro saws. I don't have any pics of my custom mufflers but i will post some in the next couple days, as I cleaned everything up and started putting some away for now. I take trees down in my spare time, usually by myself, mostly climbing and directional falling. So anyways, heres some pics. I also work on the 4mix engines, (this one ate a valve and keeper) as well as trimmers and brush cutters. I have some old American saws as well, and enjoy working on them, but nothing like porting a piston ported big boy Stihl.

leipsig saw works..

The dawgs are .125" stainless and come with all necessary hardware-$40. When I get the muffler up I'll put a price, there will be a core also. If anyone is close and just needs some help getting something to run, as it should, or how to bypass the newer epa super restrictive crap. I can make your saw/trimmer really run+proper tune, or extra parts, all the way to a good woods porting. Just send me a PM.

I have a stihl 024 av with a 16" bar, and a little cs 300 like yours with a 12" bar.

mjsoldcub 12-16-2016 05:10 PM

Oh yes I also work on huskys and dolmars and jonsereds and macs.....let me know if you need any extra parts for that echo....I have a whole other case, handles, crank bearings, carb etc....mine wears an Oregon bar now as the echo one delaminated 40' in a tree and pissed me off, chewed up the drivers on a brand new chain too....its a good climbing saw...love a 200t or even a 201 or 192/3 but just can't afford it!!!!

Sam Mac 12-16-2016 05:55 PM

I'm all Stihl when it comes to my 2 stroke stuff. I still have an 015 that I've owned since around 1975.

We've got a 051 Stihl with only about a 20" or so bar. It was completely rebuilt by a Stihl dealer with OEM parts and hasn't had but a few tanks of gas through it since--and that has been 20 years. I rebuilt my 041 AV last fall with parts from a place called Little Red Barn or something like that. Crank seal failed and all sorts of crap went inside. Every body needs to overhaul a chainsaw once--I don't think there was anything left assembled besides the carburetor! Than goodness a friend loaned me a service manual.

Here are some of my collector saws.

I'm an 18" Stihl 028 Wood Boss owner. Had it since about 1985. I've taken down many trees with it...some of them 32" diameter. It is tired but still chugging along. Time for a rebuild......oh, yes....it's a keeper!

I have a few saws.... but my favorite is the one my granddad gave me. I have no idea how old it is, but I'm sure it's easy to find out. I don't use it unless I need to because it's just so dang big. I do have a 60" bar, but I've never tried it. I don't know it it would pull it. That bar came off a 1150 Homelite center drive. I have it too, but it's locker up.

Homelite 1050 Automatic, 30" bar. At 100cc's, it's a man eater.

Why in the heck did he have a 60" bar? I've never even ran across a 2 man saw with one that long. That's a west coast item for sure.

J-Mech 12-16-2016 09:22 PM

Sorry. I wasn't clear. Grandad gave me the 1050 with the 30" bar. I bought the 1150 with the 60" bar as a package deal on other items. I did check to see if the 60" fits the 1050 and it seemed to. Chain was shot on the 60" but is ed the same chain as the 30". I don't know if the clutch on the 1050 would run it though. The 1150 was direct drive I do believe.

Either way, that blade seems a bit out of place for your neck of the woods! There are a handful of modern Stihls running around here with bars close to that size. I will admit the largest sawmill I ever saw in person was a double blade set-up at Mt. Pleasant Iowa(threshers reunion). Darn thing was actually setup portable! We just never saw any trees near that big, but the corn was really tall.:biggrin2:

I was talking to a chainsaw collector on the West Coast once and he informed me that all the trees back east were "twigs".

:beerchug: Great thread, I have an old O15 that my dad bought for me back in the early 80's but him and I own jonsered and can't complain!!!!

SS5150 12-16-2016 10:53 PM

I just got a Stihl MS 271 Farm Boss a few weeks back. Awesome saw. I went with an 18" bar.

Mr Hall, nice collection!!!! I have a Clinton d65 pro but that's about as old as I go, and that's the only saw I don't use..I like those old double handles... I think henry disston invented a saw that took an 84" bar twin cylinder, (2 man with the 84") at some point early on, but not sure details.... Good posts guys keep em coming....I have a friend who has some old David Bradleys....but I like my 2 old homies....they were free and that little xl2 is a beast of a climbing saw...although not the safest with no brake...but like I said...a 200t is waaaaaay out of my $ league...

028s were good saws, built like a pro saw....

Here's the mufflers I sell for 046,066, 460mags and 660s

I also just built a fried 290 into an insane ported 390, but I'm having impulse line problems...should be interesting for a clamshell saw....
Nice saws guys...
Like the old homies....any old macs??

john hall 12-17-2016 10:39 AM

We've got couple of old McCullough saws. One is a 2 man. Homelite is actually more common here than macs. My favorites were always the 2 man saws. Mercury and Disston (essentially the same), Poulan and Mall are the most common here. I have managed to acquire 3 Titans. No mosquitos with those--1 pt of 50W oil to the gallon of gas. The pics I posted were from last year. That was the first time we had ran any of the old ones in about 10 years. I've got some that haven't seen daylight in 15. I'm thinking part of my hearing trouble is running those old 1 man saws--got a Clinton with a exhaust trumpet for a muffler! Believe it or not, those 2 man Mercury's are quieter than a 12hp Kohler, can't say that about the others. If I run across any more pics I'll post them. Really need to post a pic of my Strunk--1 man saw made in Coatsville, Pa--it mixes its own oil and gas.

mjsoldcub 12-17-2016 11:24 AM

I've seen a few malls...what Clinton do you have???? Mine has that same sheep horn exhaust...nice collection....and you use em!!! I still wouldn't trade my "worked" 460mag for anything.....

Any body do tree work?? Climbing, bucket work, precision falling, forestry work, getting paid????

Some pics....there's that crazy 290 (64.5cc now) she runs but needs an impulse line before I break it in..those homeowner/farm/ranch saws are not fun to tear down....

Always have like 4-5 trimmer heads..the one is a OHV 4 stroke, (for sale)...and then my baby...shes the only saw that comes in the house :biggrin2:

There's that Clinton with 32" beavertail

I have an 029 that gets some use... I got it in 1994 brand new. I'll be getting my dads 61 Husky. I've cut way more trees with dads than my own. The only thing I don't like about the husky is that when it's above 60, she don't run the greatest. Stalls at idle. She screams though when you need her! :beerchug:

I bought a brand new echo cs-620p last year never let me down yet, then I have my dads old saw its a husky 268xp and my grandpa's old jonsered it's around 80cc.

Here's my "collection"...

Sam Mac 12-19-2016 08:02 PM

mjsoldcub, if any of my stuff needs help I know who I'm going to be talking to. :beerchug:

mjsoldcub 12-19-2016 08:58 PM

Why thank you Sam, I would be honored....I warranty all my service work for as long as I know the person if its a saw (or trimmer) I built...other than scored cylinders, because after break in that's on them.....parts, well they're iffy, but 99% of the time never have problems.... may be a fuel line or carb here and there...bigger ones get a kit smaller carbs aren't even worth the time to rebuild, especially if the owner used ethanol...Stihl is just a good company therefore my favorite and easiest to warranty labor, etc, (plus I have a great dealer)....although I do work on other brands quite a bit too though...

Quite a nice collection mark usa- for a husky guy:beerchug:

That 029/290, which was in a garbage pile and made out of spare parts and other saws is now a 64.5cc (390) saw thatll hold 14k all day in the wood ...craziest port job I've done so far...wanted to "test" the limits of a clamshell motor first...my 460 is just a monster...can't imagine those guys out west climbing 150' reds with 880s!!!!

Nice saws guys, keep em coming!!! Anybody made a back rack for their pickup that can hold a few saws??? If so I would like to see it as that's my next project for my work truck....

Here's a 372xp woods ported with a 42" bar and crazy exhaust I did a. Couple years ago...still falling trees for a guy who is not exactly nice to it

Ethanol is one of my favorite beverages, but I don't let any of my small engines or my MC drink it. :beer2: :beerchug:

mjsoldcub 12-19-2016 09:48 PM

I completely agree....although i no longer drink it either :biggrin2:....some people say it has no I'll effects but I have seen a mikuni carb completely eaten through the float bowl from a guy who ran 10% in It its whole short life...not too mention a host of other fuel related problems..in fact, I would say that's 90% of the stuff I have to fix is fuel related...good things for modern cars maybe, but not high compression 2 strokes...shit Stihl even recommends that you dont use it....

Me personally, I buy only premium non ethanol 91 Oct and treat it with stabil and some mmo whether I'm gonna use it right away or not, for all my small engines, even the kohlers...I also run my mixes a tad rich especially the newer the motor...everyone HAD to meet 50/1 by the epa....I do about 45 or so to 1....pulling a muffler off every now and then and cleaning the ridge of carbon, or port matching it is a good idea in 2 stroke longevity by the way....
