My "New" Mower Deck
4 Attachment(s)
I found this mower deck while trying to find my cat and take him inside and found it. The deck was right across the street, in the dirt, neglected, But FREE. The lot is about 1/10 mile from the house (long driveway) and across a street. The story goes that he was a baseball coach and the school bought a cub for maintaining the field. They didn't want the deck so he took it to his lot and set it there. The deck is actally pretty cleanish and has a few pitts on the underside, the deck hangers have very little wear and the spindles are stiff but are loose, I want to put in some grease before I try more. I have started to remove covers and the lift, also clean it up.

If it's free, it's for me! :beerchug:

why cant I find those kind of deals? My most recent deck was an EPay find for $50 ("only") and I'm trying to figure out how to get it to IL without having to make a road trip to southern KY...EPay priced $100 less than any other complete deck I saw on there.... heck there are idiots on there wanting $249 for 3 used spindles and used blades with no shell....
I could use a triangle deck like that I have one here that I think has good spindles and such but the shell is SHOT. I also have a nice 50A bare shell but no reinforcement plate or spindles or pulleys to assemble it with.... I see 2 44a/44c's on CL right now, one $75 and another $100, one a 300 mile round trip away, the other 300 miles each way. |
Here is a free deck for you. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=47899

I am dissasembling it to clean it completely, sandblast it, assemble it, paint it. I have another parts deck to fix some parts on it. |
How do you break a grease gun?

Your free mower deck matches JayNJeep's free tractor! Neglected but worthy of being saved. Nice find!

Got out in the shop, primed the thing, and put some grease in the spindles and turned the blades. They turn really nice, but still a little stiff, there is one that has a bent pully and seems the worst shape. I will swap that spindle from a different parts deck that I have. I took some pics, the front "nose" is cracked so I will have somebody who can weld cast things or swap the part. The blades still have some yellow on them too! |

What a lucky find Clay!! Give that cat some treats for helping you locate that deck. Another great story behind a find. Wish it still had the wooden roller on it. Did you ever find out what model cub it came off of? My guess is a 12x, probably a 125, but it is only a guess. I think the schools wanted enough hp to get the job done, but didn't splurge on anything too extravagant, like a 147. I picked up my 126 from on old school surplus, along with some nice goodies to boot.

Thanks for all of your nice responses, I appreciate it!

found out earlier today from a friend of a friend that builds these tractors up for pulling competition, I was looking for some usable stockish drive clutch pieces for my 1200 since its hub is about broken out, just need something that I can test with at the moment, since I got the machine non running and with the governor gear screw laying alongside the engine on the frame.... if it runs and doesnt knock or smoke then I'll buy new stuff...
anyhow, I mentioned that I was looking for a couple decks and he says "I wish you'd have asked like a month ago, I just scrapped one that I was tired of tripping on, nice shape too"..... I had asked him last Fall and he was supposed to keep an eye out for one for me, figures..... |

After working on it more and spinning the blades more, I have determined that the spindles are still good. Also after some hard work removing the blades, I removed the spindles. I also removed the back hangers, straightened the shell the best I could. I also noticed a crack, so I welded it, I think I did good for a 13 year old, ground it flush.
Everytbing is off except fot the idler assembly, which is rusted too much for a socket wrench. As you may see the underside is pitted but not so much. |

You can see how deep in the dirt the deck wheels were.

Not a bad looking weld there! I hate welding mower decks--in thin areas that are highly corroded, well it often times just doesn't weld at all.:bash2:
|
At least the old decks were made of steel, the newer stuff is like a beer can. I had to put a patch on a GT46 the other day and had the Miller turned down about as low as it would go and it blew through. Had to play the tack, tack, tack game. :bash2:
What is the frame for in the back ground Clay? :bigthink: |
Clay - you're doing a great job and your weld looks very good. It's great to see a young man like yourself take interest in this old iron we all love so much. Keep up the good work and post pictures of your progress!

Outer pulllys
Where can I get some new outer pullys for the spindles? What is the part number? Both of them are rusted badly.
