Cub Cadet weedeater

Picked up a non running Cub CC4065 weed eater for $20.00 for the step son. Pull start rope has been pulled out of it. Watched a U-Tube on how it comes apart. Looks like fun. Need to take 1/2 of it apart to replace the rope. This thing is a 4 stroke engine. Of course I can't get a manual from Cub but I think I have enough info to fix it unless the engine is roached. It has oil in it but it looks like chit. We'll see. Later guys. :beerchug:

My old cub weed eater made it 5yrs and then the pull cord broke, turns out the pull cord is non serviceable. I bought a new cub one but this one is fully serviceable so hopefully it lasts a while. I was looking at the 4 stroke model when i bought mine but couldn't get over how heavy it was.

Had a side gig for a long time messing with all lawn equipment and weedeaters built these days as everything else arent made to last, Gave up on weedeater and push mower repair Recently because of the hassle and throw away lifestyle everyone is into ,them expecting ultra cheap labor, and people able to pick them up so cheap these days new from the big boxes not knowing what garbage they bought as well as neglecting them with today's gas on top of it almost make it a losing battle with the cheap stuff. As always you get what you pay for as you know however amd some are worth it, stihl, echo, real Husky, etc.

My neighbor gave me a very new Troy built 4 cycle eater with the "I'm lazy and require an electric start for my stupid weedeater option" that lasted one summer and never ran again. After tearing into it and realizing how awful it was made I realized again why I don't muck with them anymore. All I have to say is good luck Sam, let me know when you or your step son get so aggravated you end beating it on the ground. It might run for a while but beware, it won't next season. But I digress, I am hopeful it will be a good buy and last for you guys. It's only 20 bones so why not.

I have a Redmax that fell off the back of a landscapers trailer, still using it 7 years later.
The pull cord broke last year, good thing I had a spare.

My weed eater/ brush cutter is a 2008 Sthil FS90. I'm tired of letting him borrow it. If I can get this POS Cub made in Mex He Co going for cheap I'll be happy. If not I will toss it in the trash.

mjsoldcub 04-18-2017 09:12 PM

That fs90 you have Sam is that a four stroke?? It should be, of course it still requires modded gas, but if you ever have the plastics off it will have a rocker box to Dr and overhead valves...I have the same power head hanging from my ceiling, (actually a couple) looking for a few straight shafts .....That's a good piece of equipment...I wouldn't want to borrow it out either....

Stihl calls them 4mix engines

Roundup is the best weed eater I have ever used :biggrin2:

Let me say this....I have never had any "redmax" stuff but....Those are Zenoah engines and i have flown a lot of those on model airplanes...Some of the best engines in the hobby ....Jerry

Older red max was Komatsu (good stuff) and new red max is husquvarna. Not sure when the transition happened.

I have the same whacker. That's a too good a machine to be lending away.

Good luck with the Cadet trimmer. Had a friend with one several years back--he was not impressed.

Me, dad, and a friend (who is a Stihl mechanic) tried real hard to resurrect a 2-3 year old Troybilt trimmer. I ordered a whole new carb (same model and brand) trying to get it to run right. Had obviously changed the usual--plug, fuel line, filter etc. We finally decided it had a crank seal going out. Being MTD you can pull up parts books--nothing on the engine was serviceable--just buy another "engine unit" for about $55. For $165 the entire trimmer could be replaced. Finally scrapped it and told the owner to get a new one--they went with battery power and couldn't be happier.

If I had to get a new trimmer, nothing but ECHO for this guy. Got a SRM3000--late 80's model in the garage--what a beast. Just last weekend my son used my FIL's SRM-200BE--its 35 years old an hadn't been cranked in a year. weed trimmers are like lawnmowers--you get what you pay for.

Yep the FS90 is the 4mix. It will take down a 1" tree like it's grass with the brush blade on it.

I'll get into the taco cutter today and see if it's worth my time. I'm not going to put any serious $$$ into it considering how cheap these thing are.

mjsoldcub 04-19-2017 09:03 AM

pardon my terrible spelling in that post.. i meant mixed gas, and overhead valves....yup, nice piece of equipment...mine starts on like a half of yank too....

I am a Echo guy also. Got an 80s 452vl saw still cuts like new one. Don't remember how old my trimmer is but at least 10yr

It lives! Besides the rope it needed a carb kit and an oil change. The gear box looks like it got loose on the tube, PO had put a self taper sheet metal screw in it to keep it on the shaft but the screw hole in the tube had turned into a slot so the head could rotate a bit. His fix was blue painters masking tape, I'm not kidding blue masking tape. Needless to say the gear box came off, got disassembled, cleaned out and refilled with Mobil 1 grease. I drilled a new hole on the opposite side and tapped the tube for a 1/4-28 bolt. Runs decent but it's no Sthil. Local Cub Sthil dealer had the carb kit, rope and fuel line in stock. I'm into it for $40.42 plus my time. :beerchug:

Edit: Forgot to mention, these cheap things don't even have a clutch. :bash2:

Glad you got it going Sam. I'm surprised it doesn't have a clutch, every cub trimmer I've had has had a clutch.

mortten 04-19-2017 04:58 PM

I would have at least used duct tape. The blue stuff comes off too easy. :) Glad its running.

$40.42....? Does that include the Chivas Regal?:ROTF1:

Unfortunately no. Guess I should include that as shop supplies. :biggrin2:

Alvy 04-19-2017 06:24 PM

Sam I believe you mislabeled that on the invoice. It's called "consumables".............literally :biggrin2::beerchug::biggrin2:

Maybe I should double it up, consumables and shop supplies? :beerchug::beerchug:
