Checking rpm

The 1211 seems to big down easy compared to the 1050 which has two less hp, I'm wondering what the best way to check rpm is? I'm not looking to spend a fortune on some fancy tool but I want something accurate.

Photo Tach

Tim,

I bought this thing for checking my RPM. It comes with everything you need and it's very inexpensive. Just $15.

Agreed! Only problem you may have will be using it on the 100. To shiny!:biggrin2:

I ordered a photo tach last night, it should be here next week and then I can start to sort out my issue.

I have an app on my iPhone called Engine RPM. It works decent, by listening to the noise emitted from the engine. I don't know how accurate it is but I think it's close enough for government work. It was only a couple bucks.

What is it called? I will get it and check it here at work to see how close it is,

What if you fart while you're using it? Does it throw off the reading?:biggrin2:

Oops I was looking at this on my phone. Did not see it. Reminds me of a tread on here a few weeks ago.

I don't need an app. I can guess engine RPM within 50 RPM by ear. No, I'm not exaggerating. Used to have bets with my employees all the time and they would lose. Usually I was within 20-30 RPM. They thought it was unreal. That's what happens with experience though.

I still use a tach though (photo or otherwise) to verify. I like to be certain I'm correct.

So instead of downloading the phone app, we can just call you right?:biggrin2:

That's what the other guys always said too. Then they had to buy me a pop. (We always bet soda pop.)

I don't know if I could do it via a video on YouTube or not. I'd almost like to try it. :bigthink:

That's the one. I've only used it a few times and never compared it to a real tach on the same engine. I could try that on my motorcycle I guess. :bigthink:

Got my tach the other day and finally had time to check the 1211, it was only spinning at 3,420 rpm but it's now set to 3,650. The grass will need cut again in a few days and I will get to see how much it helps. If I have time this weekend I will check the rpm on the 100 to see how close Jon was on his guess.

J-Mech 05-17-2017 06:57 PM

Set it to 3800 Tim. They do much better there, and it's perfectly safe. I set all mine at 3800.

I hear you but this thing already sounds like it could fly to the moon at 3650, I will see how it does and go from there.

It's just because your not used to it running that fast. Don't be scared. :biggrin2:

Patiently awaiting if I was right on the 100.......

olds45512 05-21-2017 02:57 PM

I reset the rpm to 3750 no load which give me 3600 when the decks on, I mowed with it yesterday and it never bogged down even in the deeper wet grass in the corner of the yard. Very happy now.
