Future Cub Hauler

I am hoping in the not so distant future to have one of these painted Cub Cadet colors. 1973 Chevy Cheyenne Super 30....no camper

Or one of these....Kaiser era Jeep Gladiator

DieselDoctor 10-07-2017 12:16 AM

I vote for the Chev simply because it will be much easier to do a two tone yellow/white paint scheme on it then on the Gladiator. The Chev is a two tone from the factory. Much more parts available cheaper too. Please keep us posted on the hauler build. I had a 74 GMC 3500 with a 454. No wheelies, but boy would it smoke the tires on a burnout!

R Bedell 10-07-2017 06:07 AM

Nothing against the Jeep, but I too would lean towards the Chevy C-30.

CubDieselFan 10-07-2017 09:26 AM

I like the Chevy as well. My first truck was a 1977 Silverado, 4x4. These trucks were bad about rusting so it my be difficult to find one.

DeltaCub 10-07-2017 09:42 AM

I am leaning toward the Chevy as well. I really like the design and styling of those square bodies. The Jeep has a utilitarian "coolness" about it but parts are harder to obtain.

cubs-n-bxrs 10-07-2017 09:52 AM

Gonna go against the grain. Go with the jeep. Much better looking than a square body Chevy. Easy enough to two tone.

I vote for the Chevy too. They look good with the Cubs. Here's my '73 K10 Custom with '69 125.

mickb72 10-07-2017 10:15 AM

Do the Chevy. My dad had a new 73 small block. The exhaust manifolds cracked. I'll bet that super 30 has a big block. I'd like one of those for a tow vehicle. Mike:biggrin2:

ol'George 10-07-2017 10:22 AM

Chebby fer sho' sista.:Bowdown2::High5:

Riley Henderson 10-07-2017 10:18 PM

Another vote for the chevy my first truck was a 76 chevy scottsdale 30 4x4 single wheel pickup and it to has the 454 with 400 tranny and 203 transfer case oldest truck I ever owned and the truck I had the least trouble with im SO glad i hung onto the whole time but she needs attention when I quit driving it on the highways the floors was about gone out of the cab
Good luck on the new hauler:beerchug:

CadetTommy 10-07-2017 11:40 PM

Chevy. I love squarebodies.

cadzag72 10-08-2017 04:32 AM

You should keep it IH and find a Travelette!

DeltaCub 10-08-2017 10:11 AM

I like old IH trucks! They, like the old Jeep Gladiator have that old school ruggedness about them. However, Both the Jeep and IH are a little harder to obtain body parts. So, the Jeep is eliminated and I am considering a Toyota Tundra. Sam Mac has one and has made many positive comments about it. A while back I think it was Zippy1 who posted a link on YouTube about crash tests. The Toyota Tundra and the Chevy Silverado faring the best and next best respectively. Basically, The Chevy Cheyenne Super 30 is still my first choice but the Tundra is still a contender.

How do you go from wanting a 70's Chevy/Jeep to a aToyota Tundra?

I like the 70's Chevy's. But, I like the early 90's trucks too. I drive a '91 Chevy Silverado now. We ran the 70's trucks growing up. I used to have a 77 C-30 dually. 454, 400 turbo.... GAS HOG!! Traded it for a 1996 Dodge 3500 4x4 dually diesel 5 speed. Now that was a truck!!!

I still want the '73 Chevy dually...but if I cannot find the one I want then I will go for the Tundra. The 70's 454 was a gas sucker...but I don't care...it is not going to be a daily driver! :beerchug:

J-Mech 10-08-2017 01:53 PM

Speaking of gas hog..... my 91 isn't so great. 350 with a 4L80E, 4X4 and 4.10 gears. It gets like 10mpg. But it can pull a good load! I like it, but i miss my diesels.

mortten 10-08-2017 05:14 PM

Don't rember what year the small block 400 came out but I had a 1978 K30 with one in it and it wouldn't get out of its own way. I bought it a year old with 12,000 miles on it.

I like the Jeep. But I’m a jeep guy so...

Growing up, dad always had some Jeep or two. He had CJs, Jeepster Commandos and a J series truck. They were all fun and they worked hard. The neighbor guy had GMCs from the 70s and they were tough and worked hard too. My sister had a blue and white Chevy Cheyenne dually that was very cool and classy. So, there you go. :beerchug:

I thought you already owned the Chevy. Do you really need a dually? I saw a 70 4x4 3/4 ton 4 speed sell on Mechum's auction sell for 11k, looked like new. I thought that was a deal compared to what's on the lots, new or used. Mike:biggrin2:

I like the 400 SBC. If I could afford to put fuel injection on one, I'd replace the 350 in my 91 with a 400. :biggrin2:

Found this yesterday at a house we were roofing.... she might sell it.
Looks like a '53....

Wasn't that 400 put in older big trucks a different a motor? (truck motor) Different bore and stroke, deck height. Most 400 i saw in cars were 2 bbl. I did see a 4bbl on one in a motor home. Mike

You're thinking of the 429BB. Different motor. The 400SB was like a 350, just one block style. They did have a 429BB, and a 429 Tall Block. Two different motors.

The trucks had 4bbl carbs on the 400.

CubDieselFan 10-10-2017 05:26 PM

My first truck was 1 1977 Chevy Silverado short bed 4x4. It had the 400 in it. It was a good engine. I wish I still had the truck. My dad bough it in 78 and I got it in 87 when I turned 16. It sure was a sad day in 93 when he sold it.

I remember the first big block chevy truck motor was a 366 CU. in. and the cam was gear drive so the cam ran opposite direction of the other BB motors, the deck height was different also, don't ever remember a 429" chevy stock.
366,(truck) 396, 402, 427, 454. in the early days.

Jon never heard of a 429 chevy. Cadillac had a 429. Maybe you are referring to a 348/409 or a 427.

348/409 was a wedge motor, we called it a "W" motor.
the Z11 427, was a wedge motor also, basically a stroked 409
Not to be confused a Big block 427 motor.
the 400 SBC was a Siamese cylinder and low hp, Monte Carlo's used them.
they were a red headed step child so to speak.
Guys running circle tracks built them using special bearings and cranks and did ok with the SBC 400

the 402 BB was just a bored 396.
it was roomered in the day, Gm had some bore quality problems so they oversized them and brought out a 402 but badged them "400" on the fender of the trucks/motor homes.

J-Mech 10-10-2017 08:32 PM

427 is what i meant guys.... my bad.

Pontiac had a 400 too IIRC. May have been the Olds motor in a Pontiac though. :bigthink:

Green stripe wide frame 10-10-2017 08:34 PM

I think he ment the 427 that was the base engine from 66 to 90. It came in the brigadier and topkick for gmc, and the bruin and Kodiak for chevrolet.

Green stripe wide frame 10-10-2017 08:35 PM

Yep he figured it out, thought he would.:beer2:

mortten 10-10-2017 11:10 PM

427 came in the conventional cabs also. Had an 84 C70 with one in it at work.
