3D Printed emblem
 

I've been noticing how many of the 82 series are missing their grill emblem, and wondered what kind of replica I could make on my 3D printer. So, took the original off my 782, drew it up in SolidWorks, and printed using ABS plastic. A bit of chrome in a can and what I'm sure are the incorrect shades of red and black out of a rattle can and here's what I've got. It's not nearly as shiny as the original factory chromed piece (on left in picture), but for a utilitarian piece, I thought not bad.

As for the cost...the actual material doesn’t cost much for the finished product, just a buck or two. The real costs add up though, just as with most any other fabrication job, in the setup and trial and error processes involved. The printing of one of these probably took a couple hours of machine time too. It’s one of those things like most hobbies (including Cub Cadets) that the cost often times is more than the worth of the finished product.

I know the 3D printing is big in the RC world. Amazing what can be done.

I also strongly suggest you make more to sell. I'm certain you will make money off them.

Thanks. I appreciate the encouragement, but doubt I’ll go that route unless somebody with knowledge of trademark laws could convince me that selling them won’t bring the wrath of Case-IH down on me. Maybe I could offer them as giveaway incentives, maybe for a certain dollar value donation to OCC?

You would have to sell a lot more than you can make for Case/IH to even notice you. I am thinking way in the thousands.

You did a very nice job! Hey, if you ever decide to make a run of them, put me on the list of "might be interested if the price is right" folks". Wonder if it would be more worth your time to just print them and let the end user take care of trimming and painting? I'm certain that's where the real labor would be.

The cost can be very affordable since there is good 3D printer sold in kit today but the skill need to drew it up with SolidWorks is not something you can get at the store. A good alternative method is using a 3D scanner to duplicate the part you want to print, some printer got one integrated.

I agree with what has been said. Our hobby needs creative people like yourself. Many of us are old school (maybe just old?) and don't have the knowledge of the new technology out there. Please consider making a batch of these. I would like to buy a few.

Very nice!! I could use a few. Would be very happy to make a donation to help with costs... you wouldn't have to worry with Case/IH unless you were making thousands of them and advertising or marketing them on a national level. Just selling or giving them away within the hobby would not be a problem. Amazing what you can do with modern technology and a little know how and want to!!:beerchug::beerchug:

My wife has access to several of those 3D printers and has made all kinds of things for her class and school. I didn’t even know something like that existed. She kept telling me what it was. I said, no that’s a CNC machine, she said no it’s not. :biggrin2:

She made keychains this year that were thin red material Mickey Mouse heads with her name and phone number engraved in them in white and some other multi level 3D piece with her name in it, looked pretty cool

Not sure but I think her machine can do colors so you wouldn’t have to paint them. Not sure how it does it but I’m sire there’s probably different variations of machines. She said the process takes a long time though.

That's really cool. Now, if someone could just 3D print some plastic hood panels.... That'd be a money maker. :biggrin2:

Got mine!!! Hey the work is fabulous. Obviously its not a molded part, But for something made on a 3D printer (I'm guessing a hobbyist version) this thing is great. To be honest it would only have took minor work to make it trailer queen worthy. Thank you so much for making these up! I still have to put the one on the 982. The only thing I had to do was 10 seconds work with the dremel to slightly open the punched hole in the screen--didn't want the screw to snag it and strip the plastic. FYI, this one is on my IH 782--PO wanted it painted yellow and white:HeadScratch:

When you find an original in good shape they bring a lot of money.. so this is definitely a much cheaper alternative and at 10ft nobody can tell the difference!

Good to know you guys like them. Nice picture too, John. I can make more as needed, and will keep the listing going for a while.
Expect to have something else of a similar nature to show off soon, just gotta figure out a few of the finer points before it’s worthy of posting.

If they weren't IH made, they would not. Only the QL tractors, and the 82 series had that particular emblem.

That makes sense now that you mention it. It would be kinda cool to have one with a magnet on it to use a refrigerator magnet or a larger one made out of foam to hang in the garage.:bigthink:

Not to say you couldn't put one on an 1811..... I see nothing wrong with it. But they didn't come with them. Actually, they should have came with a CCC emblem. Most are long gone. I hate the look of the CCC emblem. If my 1811 had one, I'd take it off.

I wondered what they had for emblems . If mine had a CCC emblem I believe I would take it off also. I can't see it as looking as good as the IH one.

They look odd to me with nothing between the headlights... I'm not really a fan of the CCC emblem.. but it looks better than nothing.. The IH emblem definitely looks the best!:beerchug:

For some reason CCC didn't use their emblem long... only seem to see them on the early CCC tractors.. :bigthink:

When I make those IH replica emblems, they’re prepared to be mounted with a pair of #8 sheet metal screws. The original cast pieces had studs formed into the backs that were secured with speed nuts. If you look at the mounting, you’d likely tell the difference pretty easily.

If somebody wanted a CCC one, I could print it up easy enough, but I don’t have any to use as a model, so would require a dimensioned sketch be sent to me to make it from.

Yep, still make them. Every so often I run a batch through and keep an eBay listing opened for them. Didn’t pay any attention to the idea that eBay listings posted here get cleared after a time, so that post went away quite awhile ago. Anyway, here’s a link if interested:
