Cub Cadet 129
 

Hi:

I have the chance to buy an old broke down Cub Cadet 129 on CL. Price is $125, but I’m sure I can get it for less. Says engine turns over but doesn’t start. I really just wanted to use it for some parts, etc. I’m curious though, how I could check the hydrostatic drive without it starting? Or if there’s a way to see if the hydrostatic transmission is working at all. I’ve heard that a lot of times these old broke down cubs get towed which destroys the tranny.

Also is that’s true how is the best way for me to move it without damaging the tranny?

I, personally, wouldn't worry about the hydro being gone. That's very rarely the case with these things. If it is, they are generally available at a reasonable price.

You can move it short distances (to load it or whatever) without hurting it, but if the release valves are stuck you shouldn't tow it for a quarter mile or anything.

At that price, as long as there isn't a giant hole in the block, you can't go wrong.

Thanks! Yea I figured for that price it would be worth it even I all I did was get the 12hp engine running for a repower on another cub someday.

Heck get it running, it might be a good running machine.

That's a fine price. If it turns over without it sounding like a cement mixer from inside, it'll start without huge probs.

Grab it before someone else does. The hydros are pretty indestructible :-)

Right now I only have a Cub 72 but wouldn’t mind a wide frame too. It’s not like I could really use many if any of the parts from the 129 on the 72.

Well, heck if you've only got one, than this is a no brainer. Turn off the computer and go git 'er dun!

A wide frame hydro and a narrow frame gear drive don’t share a ton of parts aside from engine stuff (and a 301 in that tractor is a bit different than the 241 in your 72), but there are some I suppose.

Buy it and get her going again!

Good news the seller still has it. Sounds like I’ll still have to pay the 125 but heck if I can get her running that’d be pretty nice.

Question tho, worst case if the motor seems in good shape and I can salvage just that, would a 12hp fit in a 72? I’m not willing to modify my 72 tho, love that little rig. And the 7hp is nice powerful little motor.

I'd try to get it for less as well. The radiator is gone.

That and the 44a deck looks pretty trashed.

You're basically buying a non-running half-tractor with no usable attachments.

Still worth it in parts, and it probably wouldn't take a ton to get it running and driving, but still...
