Recent cold snap
 

Kind of quiet here lately so I'll ramble about the weather. In my part of NC the temps run from single digits to upper 90's in any given year. It is way more common to get several days in a row of upper 90 to low 100 deg weather, than it is to get several days in a row of weather that does not get above freezing. This recent cold snap broke records here--something like 10-12 consistent days below freezing--got down to right at zero a couple nights. When You get those extreme cold temps for so many consecutive days, all sorts of problems show up. Lots of folks had water lines to freeze. When it did begin to thaw, we found 3 freeze breaks in the air compressor house at work. Neighboring fab shop had one a few days before us. Our compressors have been in that setup for 20 years with never a problem. Here at home, I had stuff freezing up in the farm shop. Building is built into a hillside on 2 sides so it has never had a problem freezing stuff, till this year. Hopefully nothing is damaged. I went to move my 2284 to a different shed on New Years day. Throttle would not move. Couldn't force it, got it to crank at an idle. Went back this past Wed. and it moves fine--darn thing had frozen up. I don't know how you fellows up north tolerate all that cold weather.:bash2:

Don't have to go very far north either John. Temp swings here normally from about -10 to 100, but I've seen hotter, and I've seen colder. Coldest I can recall was -25. That's cold.... I don't care where you are. For at least two weeks it didn't get much above zero here. Nights were down around -15. Then, just like that it warmed up to 56. THAT SUCKS! Now all the cold stuff is sweating. Went out to the garage to get a tool out of the toolbox today. Water literally dripping off the drawers. Cubs were as wet as they would be if they were out in the rain.... but worse because the water was everywhere. Under the hood, on the motor.... everything since it's condensation. Now it's raining. Ground hasn't even thawed yet, so it's soupy and slick on top, but still froze underneath. Tonight temps are supposed to drop, and by tomorrow afternoon, 22 deg and snow. It's said if you don't like Illinois weather, wait five minutes, it will change. No one knows it like those of us who live here. :bash2:

Yeah, stuff sweating like crazy here too. Would you believe we had some spotty black ice Tues. morning and by 2 PM we had the bay door open at work and didn't even bother to cut the heat off--so sunny it didn't come on. Weather was just so nice we went home after 8 hours, plenty more cold and crappy days to come.
I really hate this severe cold, but when we get a summer drought and weeks of high 90's that is worse. Maybe its the emotional drain of watching everything green die.

Now if we could just get about 8 " of WET snow for some good sledding. Funny thing here is we get 8" of snow and 3 days later its all gone! That's why we declare it a holiday and everyone runs to the store to get ingredients for milk sandwiches!

Just about mirrors us in Michigan also.
So Dam humid, @*56 in my shop also, and what hurts is the sweat you see on an engine block outside is what is on the inside also !!
Nothing new about draining a quart of water out of gear housings & engine blocks on those old 2 cylinder John Deer's every spring.
Even the old loader tractor (IH -400) accumulates near a quart of water condensate during the cold season.:angry:
I'll take the cold to this humid stuff any day.

Yep! That is the truth about the condensate on the inside!

I'm with you, George. I'll take the cold over the humidity too! Only "safe" place is on concrete, in an insulated, heated building. :angry:

I got up this morning and wind out of the north at about 40mph.
Colds on its way! Never got as warm as you but we did lose a little snow.

Just stepped out on the back porch for a smoke. Still raining, only now it's below freezing. Everything is covered in about 1/8" of ice. Gonna be a lovely day tomorrow. :bash2::bash2:

Up, then down. Last week we were in the teens for a high. Then a slow "warm up" over the weekend. Early this week into this morning we got up to 40.
Now it's blowing like crazy, and temps are dropping. Talking teens to single digits again, and below 0 wind chills.
We lost a great deal of snow over the last few days. But it's WI, just wait a day, it'll be changing.:biggrin2:
I'm just so not into the cold and snow. Every year I HATE it worst. But born and bred here, and have no desire to move to the warmer climates. They have there not so likeable weather as well. So I guess I'll bitch about the cold until summer, then I'll be happy. Well, until it gets real humid.:biggrin2::bash:

was so cold here, that for the first time ever I could not completely clean the horse stalls........We had two stalls that had developed pissburgs, after 10 straight days below 5° at night we had the horses ducking to go into the stall because the floor was 8 inches deep in frozen bedding.......I was finally able yesterday to clean both stalls because we had 3 days above freezing and sunshine to warm the barn.

It was 60° yesterday and now it's raining and 50°. The rain is supposed to turn to ice later today and then turn into 15-17" of snow.

That’s not good, watch out for white ice too! :biggrin2:

I live about 5 miles from him and yes it was below O* cold, but now 58* and raining.

You guys usually get our weather in a day or two. Snowing like a rock star here now. I'm waiting for the ice to melt on my windshield so I can go to work. This sucks.

Now up to 62° and sunny.

Well guys somewhat but not much better here in NO Ala. It has been in the high 60s most the week, even got in the shop a couple of days and did some work on the 100 :beerchug: This morning it was 62 degrees at 5:30 and raining, it is now 1:30 pm temp is 31 and weather guys calling for snow. Going down to the teens tonight.

Same story here, all the snow turned to water, and with the warm weather yesterday and Wednesday, my tractors are wet, tools too. The shop called us off today. Rained cats and dogs on my way home last night, and continues at this moment. Our road is a white, complete sheet of ice. Guess there is more ice and about 3-5" of snow to come. Already made my 40 hours, so I can live with the day off.

Seems like when I was a kid, the snow came around Thanksgiving, and stayed white on the ground until spring. Could not agree more about rather having cold temps.:biggrin2:

We live with extremely high humidity here all year long. When it’s hot it’s HOT and when it’s cold (for us) it feels really COLD. I have a cold storage customer who runs their lifts in 0 to -10 every day and then charges them on an ambient dock that reaches high nineties most of the summer. People don’t realize that condensation happens internally to everything with a space and being all electric machines I work on, water and electricity together is such a good combination. :BB&YS:

I feel for you guys up north. You can’t really do anything when it gets this cold but stay inside. I think I would go stir crazy without a heated area to tinker in.

Well.... calling for some snow tonight. I don't get too excited about getting the snow equipment ready to go because snow seems to come in spurts from year to year anymore. Don't need it every year. Plus I live in the country and drifting is more of an issue. Anyway.... considering getting the blower and cab mounted to the 1811 and taking it to town to clear. Can't decide if I want to go through all the work or not. :bigthink:

As I mentioned in my other post "Good and Bad" we've had an inch of freezing rain followed by several inches of snow. This morning it was -12. So cold the salt won't even touch the ice on the driveway. It just burns a little hole and sits at the bottom shivering. :bigeyes:

Supposed to get snow tomorrow PM gonna be a bad one, gotta go get milk, bread and eggs. Talking about a whole 1.2" not sure I can deal with it. People are Gonna Die! :biggrin2:

Well I was -6 here this morning. I can remember temps in the past summers during drought being high as 120! But -6 this morning and supposed to be 55 Saturday! That’s crazy!

Here is how a big snow in NC goes. 48 hrs ahead, we have a chance for a trace to 2". 12 hrs ahead its 2-4". Then it starts and is predicted to stop 12 hours later at 6". Well, we are 10 hours in, still snowing and are around 9-10".
About suppertime we'll start packing it down to make some good sled runs.
Its going to be in the teens tonight, and 40 tomorrow.

Not a jamb but ice has been flowing by downtown KC this week.
