New to me 1782
Hi Guys
My FIL just recently gave me his old 1782. It’s a little rough but runs pretty good. The fuel solenoid shutoff is now manual, the exhaust manifold is missing 2 bolts with no gasket, the seat is beat and it starts hard in the cold (glow plugs?). I’ve ordered a new seat, solenoid, manifold and gaskets/hardware, dash label, grille and a block heater. There is also a little leak somewhere in the rear end. Should be pretty nice all fixed up. Has anyone installed a block heater on one of these? Just looking for tips. I’ll get some pics of the rear end when I get it cleaned up. Here it is covered in road crud. Will wash tomorrow. http://i.cubeupload.com/6izQvw.jpeg Thanks in advance Scott |
Looks like a beast.
If that has the same Kubota as the 782D/882 I can recommend doing the glow plug upgrade with 12v relay bypass if applicable. Of all the things I've done to my 882 to help with cold starts, this one had the most impact. |
Looks good to me. Here are a few Cyclops tips for you.:beerchug:

Nice looking smoker!! That should clean up quite nicely. Congrats!!:beerchug:

My model has the D640 engine. Can I just replace the glow plugs on this or does it need the relay and solenoid upgrade? Seen some posts about that. The starter seems good, although I’ve read the new one crank it over better, but might need to do some fabrication on the bottom plate.
Going to have a local shop sandblast the mower deck and snowblower (which has net been used), then prime and paint it myself. Going to get a new HVLP gun this week. I’ll post some pics. Scott |
Got it all cleaned up:
http://i.cubeupload.com/Zt6oQL.jpeg Got everything tore down: solenoid, manifold, plugs, headlamps, seat and battery. Need to remove drivetrain to service cv joint and replace fan belt. Just waiting on parts. Really fun project. |
Nice Smoker! :beerchug:

I was able to remove my driveshaft without moving the engine or transmission.. it was tight but I managed to get it out.. mine needed new boots on the CV joints and i did the belt while i was there!:beer2: |

Only thing I can add was removing the oil filter on the rear end gave more room to get the drive shaft out and back in. Time it right and dump the rearend oil at same time. :beerchug: |
Nice smoker! I think they changed the gp's on the 1782 to take the full 12 vdc by looking at the schematic.
The 1772 and prior built had the resistor in series with the gp's dropping the voltage to the plugs. It still wouldn't be a bad idea to use a solenoid to keep all that current out of the key switch. Just use the orange wire that attaches to your gp's now to energize the solenoid. Don't buy any Kubota parts from Cub Cadet. I get all my Kubota parts from Messicks. http://www.messicks.com/ Get the part number from PartsTree and then take the "KB" off of it and use that number on the Messicks search. Oh ya, we like pictures so keep us posted of your progress.:biggrin2: |
Thanks for all the tips guys. Anyone have a pic of where and what type of solenoid they used on the GP’s?. And does adding that extreme axel support bracket make that big a difference? Just like some opinions.
This is my first smaller GT. I really like it. It’d be an unbelievable tractor with 4x4!! |

The support braces/brackets make a HUGE difference.. before I added them you could feel the chassis twisting in the tunnel area when you went over uneven ground.. My factory brackets were in place and the rear mounts were tight and not broken but it still flexed a lot.. the extreme braces work wonders.. doesn't even feel like the same tractor.. I would highly recommend them..:beerchug::beerchug: |
Got the 1782 running nicely. New exhaust manifold, glow plugs and a full service(tranny fluid looked like tapioca pudding) has it running smooth. I bought a new solenoid, but it will not draw back. It will hold like the old one, but will not pull it back. I got it off eBay. Other than that, it’s been a fun project. Got some new chains and it pulls my wagon really well 1k lbs. I’ll get some new pics up.
