My Son picked up a 782 twin stick
3 Attachment(s)
When it was very cold a few weeks ago, my son snagged a 782 with dual hydraulics and a cast iron rear end. He is very excited!
He only gave $140 for it. Its pretty clean, not all beat up. I would say it has spent most of its life in the garage. They guy said he left it outside this last summer when it wouldn't start. Oh, and he got the manual with it as well. The tractor was frozen to the ground and his friend that helped him get it busted the steering getting it loaded on the trailer. It turned out to be the adjustment bolt, snapped it right in half. I had a parts steering box that we use d to repair it. Next is to get it running. It has the KT 17 series II with about 650 hours if I read the gauge right. I will try to get some pics up, my chromebook has quit letting me post pics on here. Can not figure out why! Randy |

Also, anybody know if I can use an ignition switch from a 2182 in place of the 782 switch? They look identical except the 2182 switch has an extra pole on it.
2182 on the left. Randy |
Can't help with the switch but nice rig. I have an early yellow/white twin stick 782 that I really like. Power angle plow is great in winter.

Randy:
You actually have a 784, just like the one I have. They are kinda rare to find. Quote:
Cub Cadet did not start putting KT-17 Series II until serial number 726,125>. None the less, it is definitely a fixer-upper or complete restoration. :IH Trusted Hand: |
You need the proper switch for it, the 2182 switch wont work.

the engine. looking up the 2182, it says it gotts a ka bow tee 3 cyl gas 'ingin. so it is possibly a non points ignition??? that would require a ground terminal to stop it, thus the extra switch terminal. I would guess that switch is not going to do what you want. Now if your curious you could look up the wiring diagram for both and follow it to see if there is continuity in the various positions that you need, but I doubt it the 782 has off,on with lights, on, and start positions. prolly best to suck it up and buy the correct switch. Now be warned, there a ppl selling switches that they say will cross reference and work but they don't.BTDT buy the right switch by part number. Story time: Some years back I decided I was going to make a switch from multiple switch parts in my junk pile that would kill the mag ignition on a M-18 without using a relay in my 782, and retain the factory positions with lights as I mentioned earlier. Well it took me a day but i did it and it is still working 10 years later. but that is me and my OCD determination. Ha,LOL Go to cub cadet or partstree and look up the correct switch number you need.:beerchug: |
The CORRECT Ignition Switch for the 782 is....725-3021-----> 925-3021

Roland, the serial number is 708103 and the gentleman indicated the tractor had been in the family since new. The motor says series II on it, but i know that doesn't mean anything for sure. I will try and get a pic of the engine tag. We have a 18 mag we can put in it if the motor ends up having issues.
I am not very up on 82 series tractors, so I didn't even know about the 784. I did just google it while writing this and see some info from Myron Bounds about it. I just couldn't read it after saving it. Thanks for the info. Randy |
From your Model Tag...142784399
14 = Garden Tractor 2 = Model year (ie: 1982) 784 =Factory Model 399 = For IH dealers in IH Red Good find. |

Thank you to all who posted, got some great info to use!!
Going to go ahead and order the switch and I will post back when we get it running. I have to post a pic of a PO mod, your gonna laugh! Randy |
Nice to see you have another red one.
Keep us posted on your progress. |

Here is the tag on the motor. It appears to be a series II so I am guess it was replaced at some point, but I think it was early in its life because it looks much like the rest of the tractor.
I know there is somewhere to look up when the motor was made, but I can't find it for the life of me. Randy |

You have the Tri-fecta. (1) Cast Iron rear end, (2) a 784, and (3) a series II engine. :IH Trusted Hand: |

I don’t think IH ever offered one on the 782 (just a sleeve hitch), but I know CCC did. I don’t know if that was just for the aluminum rears or for the cast iron ones they did early in the run as well. At any rate, that’s a fantastic deal for a great tractor. If that’s only it’s second engine, that means the first one (which would have been a series I from the factory) lasted at least 12 years. Which means maintenance must have been relatively good on it, since those series Is were a bit more finicky when it came to that. Also, I can’t imagine that late in the KT17 production run that they weren’t basically building M18s with a different ignition system, so it’s probably about the best case scenario KT17-wise (with the possible exception of actually having the remote oil filter kit installed). |

Cub Cadet DID offer a 3 Pt Cat O hitch....
|
IH never offered the cat 0 hitch. It came out after the MTD buyout. Only on AL rear ends, but will fit a CI one.

Thanks guys!! My son Bryan and I pretty excited about it, best of all he is excited about Cub Cadets! My Grandson, his son who is 2 1/2, is also nuts about tractors. I have missed doing tractor stuff since my Dad passed, so I am looking forward to the future!
I have a new ignition switch ordered and as soon as we get the steering fixed, we will get it to the carwash to clean up and hopefully get it running. Randy |

Randy, It's great that you have three generations involved on this one!:beerchug: I have played with Cub Cadets since the 1970's. I had my step son interested in them until he was about 14. He is now 16 and want's nothing to do with me or the tractors... I guess it's the age.:bash2: So it's back to me and Dad.... I have often wondered if I will still find the joy in these little machines after my Dad is gone?:bigthink: I sure hope so... but I just don't know how much fun Cubbin will be without someone to share it with!:bigthink: You have a great project going here... it's gonna be nice! Keep us posted!!:beerchug::beerchug: |

Its not as much fun for sure, I really haven't done a lot since my Dad passed 9 years ago. But my Son is 19 now and he isn't as hard core as I am, but I am happy to be working on my cubs again! I am 51 and starting to think about what I want to get done be the time I retire and can really do a lot of shows. I have consecutive serial number OCC's and hope to have them both done by the next Red Power thats close enough for me to go. Randy |

Not sure if anyone else has them. I haven't seen them. I bought them 30 miles and 5 years apart. Already paid for it and had it on the trailer before I looked at the numbers. Good thing too, it would have cost me a lot more!! I painted up the first one and when I got the second one mostly painted, the color was way off and I got mad and let it sit for awhile. Then Dad died, (they were his) and it has sit since. I am back in the mood now. :beerchug: Here is the first one. It was painted about 13 or 14 years ago and this pic was from last summer. Randy |
Congrats on the 784, Randy.
