White Build-up in Exhaust

3 Attachment(s)
I took my muffler off my 147 to fix an exhaust leak, and noticed this white build-up inside. Is it normal or anything to worry about?

I could try to get better pictures if these are not good enough.

I probably should have mentioned that I put a new spark plug in about 4 months ago and that one had a build up like that. Here is a picture of the one in it now.

How often are you adding oil to it?

Shrewcub 06-07-2018 08:25 PM

Looks like your DEF nozzle is leaking! :biggrin2:

Seriously, looks like you're burning some oil, and hot! Have you checked the timing? Tuned the carb? Checked the head gasket?

I have to add oil almost every time I use it.

I have not checked any of that stuff, but I'm guessing I should.

That's what I figured. Oil burner.
Might be a tad lean, but it looks more like you just use it and get it hot while working it. Not much you can do short of an overhaul. I'd still make sure the carb it tuned right. Itherwise, put it back together and run it until you can get a new motor.

I build them by the way....

I'll check the carburetor and keep using it. I want to get it rebuilt eventually.

I get a brown build-up on my exhaust! Something I have to take care of every day! (Sorry!)

One more question. I hear something rattling around inside the muffler, I think a chunk of carbon. Could that cause any problems other than making an annoying noise?

It's likely the baffle loose. I really doubt it's a chunk of carbon.
Can it cause issues? It can..... but probably won't. Only real issue is likely just the noise will drive you nuts. From the pics you posted, I'd say it's time for a new muffler anyway. Might just replace it. Probably be a lot quieter too.

It was a different used muffler. Before I put it on, I heard something in it. I got a lot of black dust and a few bigger chunks out, which is what made me think it was a piece of carbon. Do they still make mufflers for these?

J-Mech 06-08-2018 10:56 PM

Might have been an old wasp nest covered in black carbon.

Yes, they still make mufflers for them, lol. You can get one from Cub Cadet, or an aftermarket company like Stens and Prime Line. Look up the part number and look on ebay. Don't buy a super cheap one, they are tin can thin and not quiet at all. But you don't have to get the like $60 one from Cub Cadet that is, unless you want to, they are very good. Middle of the road price. Stens seem to be OK. Nelson are also good and may have been who made them originally. :beerchug:

I'll see what I can find.
