Look What I Picked Up!

3 Attachment(s)
Picked up this unique piece over the weekend. It is a hodgepodge of different parts with a Kubota D950 3 cyl. diesel. The tractor starts and drives flawlessly. Everything works as it should.

Since it will never be an "original" Cub Cadet, what do you guys think of a 982D clone so to speak? Move the battery back under the hood, replace the fuel tank and fenders to match that of a (1572/1772) and find a hood without the gas fill hole. Then some IH red paint and 982D decals (if they exist).

I know anything is possible, but does this sound feasible? Has anyone done this?
:bigthink:

olds45512 08-28-2018 12:46 PM

Sounds like a cool project. I know a good bodyman that can make the hole in that hood disappear.

Terry C 08-28-2018 01:08 PM

Cool!! :beerchug:
Can you take the side shields off and take some pics? A 950 is pretty big, I would like to see how they did it? Thanks

Dstein16 08-28-2018 01:19 PM

When I get home I will take some pics with the side panels off. I do know the air filter housing was modified to fit (not so pretty weld job).

Looks like a Cyclops fender pan. I don't see any brake pedals or power steering. :bigthink:

Good eye. :beerchug:

I wondered why it didn't have those too... the previous owner didn't know either.

J-Mech 08-28-2018 02:27 PM

Finding a hood without a hole will be tough. Like Tim said, having that one closed up can be done. But finding the furl tank for under the seat..... that might take a while. Not like they part a lot of those out, and when they do, that tank sells fast. Besides, the cyvlops fuel tank is bigger. I'd remove the hole in the hood and repaint it as is. But I would make it look like an 88 series IH, or a Magnum.

Rest of it looks kind of cobbled. No pedals. No PS, and what's the box on back? Does it have rear PTO?

You can get most of the parts for the tank off a 1105.
That tank is almost the same, maybe it can be modified.

olds45512 08-28-2018 04:22 PM

If you have a fab shop nearby you could have a custom tank made. That's probably the route I would go if I had a diesel and needed a new tank.

DieselDoctor 08-28-2018 04:25 PM

That's very interesting and opens up a world of questions. Mounts, frame mods etc. I too would like to see some more pictures close up. Neat find!
As for the under seat tank, it wouldn't be too hard to fab up a rectangular tank if you had too.

Diesel hoods & fuel tanks bring an easy $100+ on the bay and they sell quick. It's not correct so I would just put a Cyclops tank under the rear pan. I too wanna see some pics of that diesel shoehorned in there.

Georg made his own tank.

I've seen several 982D's on here over the years.

DX had a nice one.

Turbo Mike (king of the turbo's) built this sweet 982TD with an intercooler IIRC.

I've looked into that. But it depends which rear it has. CI or AL. I don't think it will work, but don't remember why.

I do not know, but it needs two holes in it and a spot for the driveshaft if you have a rear pto.

Definitely "homemade" to say the least. :biggrin2:

Also, it does have the rear PTO.

yettrbomb 08-28-2018 08:54 PM

Some scrap value in copper pipe...:biggrin2:

Dirty Steve 08-28-2018 09:55 PM

Whoa! That is some wild fab work!! I kind of dig it!! Congrats:beerchug:

Diesel Hood

Hood on Ebay right now!

Terry C 08-28-2018 11:43 PM

Thanks for the pics. Does it vibrate, looks to be a pretty solid mount.

Dstein16 08-29-2018 07:36 AM

It's nothing like my 1282 when in terms of vibration. :biggrin2: Surprisingly, no vibration at all. I can put it at any speed and it is very smooth.

J-Mech 08-29-2018 08:50 AM

I would be reworking that air filter. That's not anywhere near large enough a filter to keep that diesel fed. It was barely big enough for the gas engines it was on.

I agree 100% with you on that. There are a few things I want to address sooner rather than later and that is one of them. :beerchug:

He will have to rework no matter what when he installs TURBO ON IT!!! LOL :biggrin2:

fuel tank

I have built a few custom tanks for the diesels, this one had a sleeve for the hydro welded in to the tank.

J-Mech 08-29-2018 12:38 PM

Nice Mike!
How many gallons?

olds45512 08-29-2018 01:01 PM

What gauge is it made from?

MikeMasheris 08-29-2018 02:32 PM

Stainless 12 ga it holds a little over 2 gallons

Dstein16 08-29-2018 02:43 PM

That looks really good Mike, I might have to borrow that idea.

I have a rough 1572 I planned on restoring in pieces right now. I could always use parts off of that but then I only have 1 super diesel and we all know 2 is better than 1. :biggrin2:

dragoncub 09-02-2018 07:59 AM

It’s got cyclops fenders on it. Just use a cyclops tank.
