Cub Cadet 128 starting issues
When I hook up the battery, the s/g starts cranking over, disconnect battery and it stops, also noticed that the amp gauge pegs to discharged side while it's cranking. I have replaced Ign switch, solenoid, and voltage regulator. I'm at a loss.

Sounds like something isn't wired correctly, here's a link to the wiring diagrams. I suggest you start by double checking it's wired correctly.

Also, Are you sure you got the correct ignition switch ? Is it an aftermarket switch? |

Since you say that as soon as you hook the battery up, it starts cranking. That means previously, you had the battery hooked up and it didn't do this. What was the original problem that you set out to fix? More than likely you wired the v-reg incorrectly when you hooked it up. |
What Jmench said.
You may have the newer type of vr that has the gen terminal on the bottom, so let us know what type you have. |
Or you have stuck contacts inside the V/R. All speculation until we have more info:bigthink:

I also will go along with the V/R isn't wired correctly.

I am not sure if it's a new style, will look at it again tonight. When it's cranking I have battery voltage at the yellow wire at the s/g ??? The tractor has not ran since I purchased it this spring, the engine was bad so I replaced it. PO said it used to run but smoked. I have gone over the wiring with an ohm meter and load tested the wiring with a test light, all checked OK. Been a automotive tech for 40 years, the last 26 years at a GMC/ Buick dealership so wiring is not a problem for me. My thoughts are a stuck v/r. Will look into again tonight and triple check wiring diagram.

Are you using OEM Cub Cadet parts or Aftermarket...???
:bigthink: |
I agree with all posters above.
some of the newer regulators while having the same terminal location, are not hooked to the same internal parts. Sooo you have to make sure the terminal on the reg is marked, then that you have connected them to the correct wires. Don't just go by where reg. terminals are located physically. "B" to batt. "G" to Gen or armature "A" terminal(can be stamped either on Starter/Gen.) (G is not ground) "F" to field (Smallest terminal on starter/generator) Well you get the pix, And like working on vehicles, you never know what the last well meaning "mechanic" did or hooked up incorrectly. Assume nothing.:beerchug: Let us know what you find. (It's normal for amp gauge to show heavy discharge while cranking) |
Definitely sounds like voltage regulator not being wired properly, or having a stuck cutout relay in the VR. I think both of those things will cause what you describe.
Also, be aware that some of the off-brand VRs are set for like 14.7 volts from the factory, which to me is a little hot. You can adjust them by changing the spring tension on the field coil in the VR (tighter = higher voltage, less tight = lower voltage). Also, I believe the original VRs regulated on both current and voltage, while the newer ones seem to be just voltage. |

Seems odd to be asked to be taken off of a forum. You cant be forced to log into it |

1. You didnt know what you had. 2. You didnt know where power should be during cranking. 3. You can't test load with a test light. 4. All of the above tells me wiring is an issue for you. Im sorry if you think I was calling you a liar but from the above mentioned statements I doubt you were lying. I think you just didnt understand what was happening. |
It's one thing to be great at what you do but it's another to be great at what you do and feel the need to shove it down everyone's throat that may be less experienced. :beatdeadhorse:

I think Roland should add a time out section and let those sent to it to paint the walls with their eye balls...

Personally I don’t like J and Coop on the same side.
They might turn on us. Best to keep them just against each other. :biggrin2: |

Coop is beginning to sound like J-Mech's understudy.
You guys need to chill and not be so accusatory--regardless of your experience, knowledge or tight underwear binding down there. Unlike some places in society, you are innocent until...well you are always innocent. Unless and until you admit a mistake. Which you are under no obligation to ever do. It is the internet, after all! Wrench, don't go away. Most of us are nice. :beerchug: |

This is entertaining.
Frank...... I'm a little disappointed. |
Thanks for the reset Frank... it's needed.
This place is every bit as much for shade tree weekend mechanics, first time Cub owners, as lifer wrench turners. For Gods sake let's try and welcome people, encourage them, help them (us) learn from mistakes and become part of the forum. |
