New tractor

7 Attachment(s)
I was at my Cub dealer last week, and he asked if I was still buying GT's. I was like, not really looking, why?

He said one of his customers has a 682 with a blowed up engine, and he wanted to sell it.
So this morning, I went and looked at it, as it was only 20 minutes away. We made the deal, and I went back this afternoon and picked it up.

BONUS, it's a local tractor. First one that I found, and bought with the decal still on it. Used to go there a lot when I was young with grandpa. So that was pretty cool.:beerchug: They've been locked up for a long time. Just can't remember what year.
I asked the guy, how he knew it blowed up? He said he was cutting grass, and it just stopped.:bigthink: Okay, works for me...:biggrin2:

So I'll see, check it out, and go from there. So here's some pictures.

CubDieselFan 09-30-2018 10:23 PM

Awesome find. I bet it is not blown. I hope it is something simple.

olds45512 09-30-2018 10:27 PM

I bet that thing is gonna look sweet after a wash and wax. Congrats!:beerchug:

DieselDoctor 09-30-2018 10:57 PM

Congratulations Zip! Nice find. I hope you find a clogged fuel filter or something simple.

john hall 09-30-2018 11:04 PM

pics in the PO's shop? Doesn't look like your place :bigthink:
Very nice looking machine. I bet you have it running in a day or two.
So, if it runs and runs well, what are...….nevermind, shouldn't ask you a question I couldn't answer myself!:biggrin2:

Gompers 09-30-2018 11:11 PM

That is a fantastic looking 682. Congrats!

Hopefully nothing major with the motor. Replacement or does it have the original series 1 in it?

dodge trucker 09-30-2018 11:27 PM

yeah, I got my last tractor (sorry not a cub, it's orange) mainly for its rear PTO and tiller, since it was sold to me as having a "locked up engine"... a slight tug on the hydro driveshaft with a pair of channellocks once home told me different. The starter and its drive was all that was seized.... basically paid for the tiller (and "stole" that) and got the tractor for free....
even though it does have a Series I KT19, for that price I ain't complaining... it runs!
that tractor with a "seized" engine just tilled up a good portion of my yard for reseeding.... between drought and crabgrass I didn't have much choice....

jaynjeep 10-01-2018 12:23 AM

Wow Todd! You got a real gem right there! Appears to be a clean straight ole tractor!:beerchug: The original Gillett decal is super cool also.. I woulda had to buy it just cause of that sticker!!:biggrin2::biggrin2: IH built to boot!! You can't loose on this one! Bet there isn't much wrong with it!?:bigthink:

The red ones NEVER come up for sale around here! We had a huge IH dealer here for years.. they sold a TON of Cub Cadets.. but the tractor pullers have just about gobbled them all up for miles around.. Apparently the local dealer didn't sticker too many of them.. I have only ever seen one.. I have a one owner 1450 and 782 that came from the local guy but no stickers!:bash2:

you'll have fun with this one!! Keep us posted.. We gotta talk soon!:callyou:

Glad to see you still got the fever!!:biggrin2:

Alvy 10-01-2018 04:41 AM

Man that’s nice Todd and will clean up with little effort. Congrats. Seat looks almost perfect too.

Dirty Steve 10-01-2018 05:04 AM

Nice looking tractor! Congrats! Get some dealer sticker copies made and start slapping them on everyone you own or see.:beerchug:

jbrewer 10-01-2018 06:59 AM

Great find Todd.

I don't see any puddles under the tractor. That's a good sign! :-)

darkminion_17 10-01-2018 09:55 AM

That looks like a keeper, a red one too!

John I like this face better... ';'

Terry C 10-01-2018 09:57 AM

Love that dealer sticker Todd! Congrats!:beerchug:

ACecil 10-01-2018 11:53 AM

Congrats on the 682, Todd!

J-Mech 10-01-2018 01:00 PM

Congrats on the red one Todd! Now you have a 6 and 7. Just need a 5 and a 9 and you'll have a set. :biggrin2:

Then he’ll need a 782d and a 582 special and a 482 and a 1282....

582S and the 482 aren't worth owning. 782D and 1282 were CCC tractors, not IH, so I don't really think of them as part of the series. I suppose they are.... but not part of the original line up.

IHCubCadet147 10-01-2018 04:26 PM

Nice tractor! Good luck getting it running, hopefully it's something simple.

mrmiller 10-01-2018 06:03 PM

Congrats on the 682 Todd! I'm looking forward to what you find out is wrong with it.

Cub Cadet 123 10-01-2018 08:43 PM

Nice find Todd!! Amazing what appears when you are "not looking" and ironic what you cannot find when you are looking. Hope it is back in action for you soon. Looks rather well taken care of from your pics.

sawdustdad 10-01-2018 09:01 PM

That's a great find. Congrats!

Hopefully by "blowed up" he meant "ran out of gas." :beerchug:

zippy1 10-01-2018 11:00 PM

Thanks everyone.:beerchug:
Well, it's locked up tight. I can move the crank about 1/2" and that's it. So I pulled the engine today, and took a better look around everything.
It has the usual caked on dirt and crud, so I will remove the fenders, and give it a good bath, and go from there.
Overall, it's in "pretty good" shape.:bigthink:
It's a KT1, so it's prolly used up. Oh, didn't help it any that there wasn't a drop of oil on the stick.:bash2: Going to pull it apart, and see what let go. I can hear a "clunk" inside just by being able to move it that little bit...
I still like it. Gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.:bash::OMG:
(John, it's my shop, what looks different?)

That's to bad, i was really hoping it would be something simple. So, does the paint look as nice in person as it does in pics?

jaynjeep 10-01-2018 11:15 PM

Dang Todd... that thing is one of the nicest original tractors I've seen in a long time... Series I still.. somebody took care of it!:beerchug: Even still got the screen under the bottom?!:beerchug::beerchug:

I'm with Jon... now you need a 482, 582 and 982 for the set!!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Gompers 10-01-2018 11:30 PM

Sucks about the engine. At least it didn’t window the crankcase.

It’s so original. I’d be tempted to rebuild that s1 if possible just to keep it a time capsule.

SS5150 10-01-2018 11:39 PM

Nice tractor.

On another subject, what do you guys salvage off the KT's when they blow? The coil & the carb, anything else?

Oak 10-02-2018 05:36 AM

Wow Todd, that is a nice looking 682 and it looks to be a keeper. You were due for a good project to keep us slackers entertained. I wish I had the time to finish my 3205 that has been apart all summer.:bash2:

The flywheel, stator, tins, muffler, bolts etc. :biggrin2:

I keep pretty much anything that isn't damaged or used up, depending on the series. Series II: Crankshaft (if not too gacked and especially if it's std still, bearings, crankcase, oil pump. Only thing I will usually trash is rods and pistons, but if those are both in good shape and bigger than .010, I might keep them around too for a cheap repair on something just to get it running (they are usually what fails though). On a Series 1, just usually interchangeable Series II parts (mostly external stuff, exhaust, intake, flywheel, PTO etc)

A totally disassembled KT doesn't take up a ton of space. A couple of boxes for the bric-a-brac, and a little room for the crankcase/jugs.

Found an engine for you Todd.
Something you also wanted:biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:

zippy1 10-02-2018 11:13 PM

Well, had to dig into it and see what really crapped out. Didn't take long to find the "issue". Yeah, it's junk.:biggrin2:
Not really disappointed, considering what I paid for it. Yes Tim, the paint is pretty nice. Sure there's scratches, but nothing "real" bad...
I pulled all the good parts off, and rolled the rest out to the junk.
Got the fenders off, so it can have a bath tomorrow. Supposed to be warmer tomorrow, so figured it's a good day to get wet. Poor thing, sure is filthy. Right up there with one of the dirtiest I've had the privilege to work on.:biggrin2:
Now, what to do for an engine.:bigthink:

Thanks Tim, but don't know if I want to crawl down that rabbit hole.:biggrin2:
What did you pull it outa? Why?

jbrewer 10-03-2018 06:36 AM

Sorry about the lunched rod. Bet that made a racket!

The good thing about that oily dirt, is that it protects whatever's underneath it from any rust/damage. It'll clean up really well.

It would be out of the Viking. The plan is to rebuild and paint the tractor and drop in a brand new vanguard. Or, you could sell me the the tractor cause I'd love to have an original red tractor that looks that nice.

darkminion_17 10-03-2018 10:16 AM

You do nice work Master of Zippy, put it in the beef barn and make it another project for anudder day...

Sorry about the thrown rod. Funny that when you run out of oil, the engine breaks.

I'm always a little nervous about Series 1 engines, but there are plenty of them out there still running strong. I got one on a 782 recently, and it is one of the better running KTs I've had. No smoke. Starts right up. Very strong. If it was a SII I'd be thrilled. Instead I'm just rather pleased.

Grab a cheap 2500 series and CH Swap it.

I bet that pump with that much crud will have a way higher op. temperature, at least 40 degrees! Clean her and let the poor thing breathe, I bet it hasn't in a while :biggrin2:.

Edit: Is the camshaft supposed to be angled like that?

Billy-O 10-03-2018 05:40 PM

Too bad for the busted rod! All that crud on the undersides seems to to tell more tales than the hour meter admits. But the tractor looks like a keeper! It's a good project tractor!

I was thinking another Vanguard myself. Really like the one in the 2372.:biggrin2:
I'm not so sure, it's all original paint.:bigthink: Now that I got the first coat of chit off it. Never had one from IH, (in red) seems the fan shouldn't have red on it. Someone who knows, please enlighten me...

I see what you did there.:biggrin2: I'm a here and now kinda guy, cause I'm not positive there is "anudder" day.
Today, I got the tins pressure washed, and the tractor. Jeepers, there was a lot of chit on this poor thing. And I've got to do it again, cause I need to do the underside.
Home alone, so couldn't get the Bota out, to give me a lift. Pulled it in and out of the shop with my scooter. Worked pretty good, just wheeled along, and go back and forth, steer the tractor, steer the scooter...
