1864 Adventures

So i have been on the look out for a 1864 for about a year now and i finally got lucky. Someone scored this as colchester over the weekend and posted it on facebook and i bought it within on 3 minuets of it being posted.

It shows just under 390 hours on its working hour meter, Starts right up with no sign of smoke and looks like it's been sitting awhile. It leeks oil from the front and rear main seals. I just plan to service and fix the oil leaks and use this as is.

I will add pictures later as my photo sharing site is down.

Congrats! A low hour 1864 is a great thing to have.

Gonna have to pull the engine to do the seals, so it's a good time to go through and clean everything as well.

All things considered, the 1864 is probably the best (non-super) GT Cub IH or CCC ever made.

Thanks. I kinda figured but honestly this motor looks cake to pull and service. This compliments my 1512 nicely. I’m hoping to find part numbers for the seals maybe something I can get at Napa and do this week.

It's not bad at all. About the same as an 82 series, but it's lighter. Way easier than a 1512.

I just did the front (rear in the tractor) seal on mine last week. KH-24-032-19-S is the p/n.

KH-25-032-06-S Should be the PTO side seal. I didn't do that one, since it didn't seem to be leaking, and I can do it fairly easily without pulling the engine if need be.

I picked mine up from the local CC dealer, but it's a pretty common engine so I'm sure pretty much anyone can get it for you.

John147 10-07-2018 09:13 PM

Got some pictures hopefully, i have the side panels it does need a grille shell though.

It's very close to the serial number break i should have grabbed a picture, I managed to just snap these after power washing the filth and oil off it.

John147 10-07-2018 09:55 PM

Been busy ordering something i need and picked some stuff up at tractor supply earlier.

At tractor supply i grabbed Kohler oil, oil filter and air filter.

Ive ordered so far a new dash panel overlay for the lights and fuel tank grommets. I need to find a used nose.

Used noses are gonna be in similar condition or headed that way soon. Get you a new one while they are still available.

Hah. 82 series is all younger than me so maybe that’s why I like them.

I only have 2 older than me.

My 2084 is the first one I can remember what I was doing when it was new though

The "KH" numbers are Kohler numbers not dependent on what kind of machine that engine happens to be bolted to....

When you say dash panel overlay for the lights are you refering to the label over the indicator lights on the upper dash? Just curious because half of mine is missing and it looks no longer available unless im not looking in the right spot!

Yes that’s what I mean, They are indeed NLA i managed to grab a unbroken used one off eBay. I ordered the seals through Napa they will be in this morning but I won’t be able to get them till tomorrow.

I want to reseal this thing this week as I have a ventrac to rebuild next week.

John147 10-09-2018 08:16 PM

I got my seals from napa today to my surprise they are genuine kohler seals, I got 10ft of fuel line, spark plugs and hydraulic filter. My rear axle seals, diff cover seal and battery hold down bracket shipped from cub today. And lastly finding the correct cub battery for these cyclops was a bit tricky. i was able to cross reference the cub part number to a group 22f battery so i ordered one.

darkminion_17 10-09-2018 08:42 PM

I got my battery for the 1641 from wally world, fit right in, I have those parts but new cub is better.

John where did you get the 22F battery? I got one for my 1782 from interstate and it didn’t last as long as I expected it to.

I should have know better, I was actually gonna message you and ask but didn't think you'd have that random stuff. I did see that weight bracket you had on ebay and thought about that one for a bit lol.

I've been using Deka batteries since the early 1970's. I get them at the Deka company store about 20 miles away. Last tractor battery was purchased in 2013 and starts strong.

I get my batteries there too. :beerchug:

Don't know if you got any batteries lately but seems the new ones don't last as long as they did years ago. ??

John147 10-12-2018 08:08 PM

I currently have the Engine out The fly wheel side is all cleaned and re sealed mice made a mess inside the housing. Thankfully they only ate the insulation of one wire but not the wire itself so i heat shrinked it and re assembled everything. I need to order exhaust gaskets and studs and i'll do the PTO side at a later date.

As far as finding a nose i ordered a new 759-3773 This is the conversion kit. my tractor is a later unit but missing all the hold down rings and such.

John147 10-14-2018 08:33 PM

Put the motor back in and ran all new fuel lines i need to locate fuel shut off valves. Tractor run alright theirs something wrong with the throttle linkage though i need to figure out how to adjust it.

Your throttle and choke cables aren't mounted proper in the clamps.

Thank you for that picture I appreciate it.

You can disassemble the fuel shut off valves and clean them out with a couple drill bits by hand.

Now would that be an issue with my throttle? Machine seems to run fine just idles a little low. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Idle speed is set with a screw on the side of the carb.

Thank you for the picture, I set the cables correct so i get full sweep of the throttle and choke. The choke is fine but the throttle is weird. It idles fine and if i start to move the lever it barley makes a change till i hit WOT then it seems to be fine. No misses or sputters at WOT this seems to run amazing and happy.

jbrewer 10-16-2018 06:32 AM

Still need to move the throttle clamp up so that there's more travel (earlier) in the throttle cable.

That's not it either though. The cable is physically pulling the lever but the butterfly in the carb isn't moving. I'll pull the air cleaner off and get better pictures tomorrow.

Sounds like the governor is out of adjustment or sticking, It looks like there's a bit of rust in the pics, something may hanging up.
