Cub 86 resto
Thanks for adding me.
When I retired I wanted a project to work on. I love restoring things so I bought an old Model 86 Cub Cadet to restore. We have had Cubs since I was a kid, and I was familiar with them, so where better to start. Right now I am restoring the brakes. I have torn them down and painted all the parts. now I am replacing the pads, which were totally gone. Any tips or tricks are appreciated. :American Flag 1: |

Are you working with the original engine? I just sold one last summer.... The steering was pretty worn out but it mowed!!!

Thanks for the tip. I am new to forums and I am trying to figure this one out.
I am sure I most likely got something out of sequence. I will give it another try tomorrow. I am not sure what format my photos are. I will check that later. Please bear with me while I learn. Your helpfulness is appreciated. Thanks cooperino! |

It's been washed on the surface, but there is a lot of gunk on the engine and frame.
don't know much history on it but it runs good. I had to replace a head gasket and now I am replacing the brake lining. would you know what thickness the original brake pads were? I am using 3/16" but I think they will be too thick. |

More pics if the engine.

I do not know the actual thickness of the material. I think the closest material available is 3/16 which might need to be a bit thinner.. Check out this PDF on relining cub pads.

I used 3/16 but had to sand the pads down on a belt sander to get them to fit.
|
That is a good tutorial. I saw that the other day and have already started on it.
I have the pads made, so now I have to set the drill press up to mill them. It sounds to me like it's kind of a trial and error thing on the thickness. I will send some pictures when I get it done. Thanks for the help! |
