1512 Is Under The Weather

The alternator went out on the 1512 over the week. Got a new one ordered, and hope to have the diesel going again soon! Sure miss riding it! :beerchug:

twoton 05-25-2019 06:01 AM

Sounds like a fun project!:beerchug:

cooperino 05-25-2019 07:02 AM

Allen,
I am sure you will get her up and running again in no time. In the mean time. All the battery is needed for with that engine is the fuel solenoid. Stick an old battery in, jump it, and go for a ride if you really start missing her! Just dont try to run lights or pto

LOL:biggrin2:BINGO!

ACecil 05-25-2019 11:52 AM

I would, Coop. But the bearing was freezing up, causing a heck of a squeal...lol!

MikeMasheris 05-25-2019 01:02 PM

Don't burn the belt you will have to move the motor forward to det the driveshaft off to replace the belt. With the cv joint conversion you can take the driveshaft out without moving the motor.

ACecil 05-25-2019 05:13 PM

Thanks Mike, I shut it off quickly, and pushed it to the shed. I did try to start it, the next day and the starter was too weak to turn it over.

Oak 05-25-2019 10:17 PM

No fuel solenoid on a D600 and she won’t run without the fuel pump. Hope you get the 1512 up and running soon AC.

ACecil 05-26-2019 12:33 PM

Thanks Todd! I sure hope so, too. I need some help with it. Things are so close on the engine, and I can't see it well.

darkminion_17 05-26-2019 12:49 PM

Hope you get your 1512 running again Allen, some things you can't do without!

ACecil 05-27-2019 05:37 PM

Thanks Lew! :beerchug:

The new alternator and regulator came today! Anyone want to come help install them? :biggrin2::beerchug:

FrankF3 05-27-2019 10:06 PM

When the alternator seized up on my 782D I did not get a new one, but simply replaced the bearings in it. It has been running fine for years. If I recall, There where 2 ball bearings used a number KB-15531-74180, (may be superseded by another number) but was only about $ 12.00 each.

ACecil 05-28-2019 11:57 PM

Thanks Frank. Hopefully, after the new alternator is installed, the 1512 will be good for a long time.

looks like that bearing might be a sealed both sides 6201, but not sure.
IIRR the Harley panhead 6v generators of the 50's used that common little bearing but it's been 50+ years since I rebuilt one.
I'd suggest not to pitch that alt. if all it needs is a pair of bearings.:beerchu

ACecil 05-29-2019 07:23 PM

Will be keeping it, George. Will have it rebuilt, and put on the shelf. :beerchug:

FrankF3 05-29-2019 09:49 PM

Yes George, both sides of the bearing is sealed.

Update on the 1512. The water pump is seized. Going to get a new one ordered. :beerchug:

You may as well plan on replacing the belt while your in this far. The joys of owning a diesel. :beerchug:

ACecil 06-02-2019 06:30 PM

So true, Sam. The belt doesn't seem to be in bad shape, but I went on ahead and ordered a new one. :beerchug:

ACecil 06-05-2019 03:16 PM

The new water pump arrived today. Waiting on a couple more parts, and hopefully the 1512 will be a runner again. :beerchug:

Where can I find info on the CV joint conversion?

Hope to have the 1512 going this Saturday. :beerchug:

ACecil 06-16-2019 09:37 PM

No luck in getting the 1512 going over the weekend. Got the new water pump in, and when the bolts are tightened, the pulley freezes up. Will probably take it to the Kubota dealer. Very disappointed at the moment.

twoton 06-17-2019 07:46 PM

Sorry to hear of your struggles.

Alvy 06-17-2019 07:52 PM

Allen maybe post a video of what you’re looking at. If old water pump “seized” and new one is also binding up when tightened, chances are something may have gotten stuck in the impeller housing or something else. Im sure we can figure this out

Mike, the guy helping me with the 1512 did get this pic of where the water pump mounts to the block. I'm not sure, if it helps or not.

Jeff in Pa 06-17-2019 08:58 PM

Make sure both mounting surfaces are flat. Then reassemble and bring the bolts up against. Start tightening in a criss cross pattern.

Keep spinning the water pump as you tighten to see if one bolt makes the water pump stop turning easily.

It is possible the water pump casting is warped and when it gets tightened, it binds it up.

Good luck
Jeff

I wonder if the impeller is not pressed onto the shaft far enough. They have a spec for the pump on the WG600 gas engine used in the 2182. :bigthink:

ol'George 06-18-2019 08:33 AM

looking @ Sam's pix, it might be possible if say a silly-cone sealer was used instead of a gasket, or too thin a gasket, that the clearance would be non existent and cause the bind, :bigthink: worth a check before you wash your hands and send it to a repair facility.
Might be as simple an an additional gasket

ACecil 06-18-2019 09:44 AM

Thanks guys, the guy is on his way now. He made some gaskets, hopefully that will fix it. Keep your fingers crossed. :beerchug:

Allen did you not use a gasket? The Cub parts site shows a gasket, #8 in the pic.

ACecil 06-18-2019 12:57 PM

Sam, we used the gasket that came with the water pump.

ACecil 06-18-2019 01:00 PM

I'm pretty excited, the 1512 is a runner again! Here's a vid of the celebratory lap! Sorry for the quality of the vid. :beerchug:
