Cub cadet 169 advice

Found this Cub Cadet. I heard there great tractors. Well anyways. $200 is it worth it. And what are somethings I should look out for when going to look at it. I'm good with small engines, just never worked on a Cub.

First, welcome to OCC........... :Welcome2:

The 169 is a much sought after model. It was the first 16HP model they introduced. Plus, it is one of the rarest models, with only 4,005 units being made. Some had the infamous Kohler 13 Fin engine block.

$200 ??? In a heartbeat.

The tractor does not have the correct muffler for a 169. In fact if that angled style is on there the elbow was most likely changed as well. That would make me question further if the engine is really a 16hp or a 14hp with 16 tins. That being said if you are not a “ purist” a 14hp hydraulic, hydrostatic, beefy tractor with a 48” deck is still worth the asking price if it’s all there in my opinion.

Slyguysnype 09-11-2019 07:25 AM

Is there a way to tell?

Slyguysnype 09-11-2019 07:29 AM

And thanks for the welcome

cooperino 09-11-2019 07:56 AM

It would be in my truck already for $200. It was not uncommon for exhaust to get changed to something other than factory. My question is why is the engine out of the tractor. Does it spin? Either way.. I would buy it! :beerchug:

Welcome BTW. Where in NY are ya? Downstate here Long Island

I would safely assume, it is the correct Kohler K341-71154 Engine in it.

The muffler is incorrect, in that the original IH-61274-C1 is no longer available from Cub Cadet. One can still find NOS or Aftermarket replacements.

There are about 3 different mufflers that will fit the 169, although not correct but will work. I am guessing this is the case.

The Blower Housing Shrouds are the same for both the 14HP and 16HP engines. The only way to positive to determine whether it is a 14HP or 16HP model, is to pull the head and measure the cylinder bore.

Mufflers are cheap to replace. Great deal!

Correct from what Ive seen. Should be 10 bolt not 9 like the 14's

Billy-O 09-11-2019 09:26 AM

Two hundred is worth it but it could become a money pit....

Seems to me PO has been using this a parts machine..... Does he have another tractor?

I learned something today. The 14HP has 9 while the 16HP has 10.

Looks like a 16hp to me...

Check the serial number on the left side of the frame by the steering tower . The serial # should have 48 in the number.

It is totally worth $200, but beware. These tractors are like rabbits, they tend to multiply. It wont stop at $200. 2 years ago I bought a broken 127 for $30 on ebay. At this point I'm fairly certain I've added roughly 2 zeros and a lot of hours to my original investment, with a total of 4 Cub Cadets and about a dozen various attachments for them. I've turned my entire yard into a giant garden so I have an excuse to use my Cubs, I spend half of every day reading this forum, and that $30 127 isn't any closer to running than it was the day I brought it home.

I'm still glad I bought that 127. Good luck, hope you bring her home.

Cheesedawg is 100000% correct. Tell me where the 169 is and I will buy it thus saving you from a lifetime of misery :biggrin2:

So everyone i went and picked it up. Paid 175 it is correct the 16hp but wrong muffler or after market. Will up date post with more pictures as i dig in. The reason. The motor was pulled was told it smoked a little and was gunna get rings and valves done but never got around to it, so it sat the last ten years.

Outstanding find. Much sought after model. Fix that up and it'll be a standout at the shows or, a rugged worker.
