147 electric lift woos
3 Attachment(s)
Just picked up a 147 with electric lift however I can not get the lift to work. I got it to work intermittently but it wouldn’t lift all the way up and it was slow. The tractor has sat since mid summer since the guy stoped using it cause it was to slow and he got something faster. But when I test the plug I get almost no reading it reads 0.001 I’m hoping there is a bad connection somewhere I got the lift to work previously by jiggling the wires. I really hope the lift isn’t bad. I bought the tractor cause it was at a really good price but was heastent at first because of the lift and now it looks like I was right, especially after seeing these are a common problem and are so expensive to fix.Pictures of the tractor below.

Nice pickup. Heres the good news. There are other ways to lift implements besides the electric lift!
|
Are you measuring resistance? Voltage?
If voltage, where are you measuring the voltage? At the lift? Do you have one lead on the hot lead of the lift and the other to ground? Details, man DETAILS :-) |
I would unplug it at the connection at the e lift motor, and then test it. Put a (-) to the lift body, and then run a (+) one to one lead on the plug.
|
Went out and did what darkminon said I’m getting power to the plug but the lift won’t move. :bash2::beatdeadhorse:
So I’m gonna say the lift is dead, just my luck guess it won’t be staying and will be listed as it’s not worth it to me to fix. I thought I got the tractor at a decent price but I guess not |

Lets just say I’m gonna end up paying more to fix or replace the lift then I paid for the tractor.

I'd look into an aftermarket linear actuator, or swap it for the armstrong lift. It has a spring assist and the 3pt on the back so it's got things going for it. |

Restoring old (anything) costs more than the original purchase price. As has been pointed out, it's a bargain in the long term.
The Armstrong lift is works well, and isn't a bother to use. If the rest of the tractor works well, the fact that the electric lift is doa is a minor issue, really. |
Remove the motor from the lift and test it by itself.
I had the same issue with my 149 and took the motor to a repair guy in Cedar Rapids and had it back in a few days for around $50 IIRC. These things stick right out there in all the elements if left outside and we all know water and electrical stuff don't play well together. |
I don’t really want a aftermarket one I’d like to keep it original as possible. I haven’t had time to really work on it much besides checking power at the plug. I know the headlights aren’t hooked up which I intend to do the light switch still moves so that’s a plus and there is a wire missing from the regulator I believe it’s there in the mess of headlight wires and it always is discharging. I got the lift to work momentarily when I first got it home by jiggling the wires that go into the cylinder but I went out the next day to mess with it more and it wouldn’t move. I’d be ok with finding someone who could rebuild it but idk were to start looking.

I've never had a CC electric lift apart before, but generally 1960's vintage motors aren't that difficult to rebuild. A diy brush and bearing replacement might just get you another 50 years of service. |
When I first got my 127, the lift was very slow and worked intermittently. I took it apart, drained out the water, changed the grease in the worm gear/clutch area, brushed out the rust in the windings, flattened the brushes, cleaned the commutator bar, and gobbed some silicon around where wires go in. That was 5 years ago. It still works great lifting a qa36 snow thrower all winter long with no assistance. I would give cleaning it up yourself a try, what is the worst that can happen if it already doesn't work.

Just pulled the motor out and apart and she is definitely fried even smells like burnt wire.....not very happy right now
|
My 147 electric lift also worked intermittently. Cleaned worked better. Then the switch gave me problems. Needed it now so I bought just a switch locally, works but sometimes doesnt. I'm new to repairs for the lift so I'm just reading and trying. Bought a 149 with hydraulic lift that needs started. Busy with house repairs.

If it's the latter, I'd some something is worn or out of adjustment on your drive line lever. Before I took mine apart for restoration I went on a quick spin around the circle drive and it was scary fast. |
Said the tractor was to slow so he got something newer.
|
Go through the drive lever linkage all the way to the end of the line. Sounds like it's not getting full articulation. Even worn out and tired, my 147 was zipping around like a go-kart before I tore it down.

It’s plenty fast enough for a hydro I’m not sure what he fully meant by it was to slow
