cw-36 snowthrower shear pin
I just got a cw-36 in good shape to mount on my 126. I looked up the shear pins since its serial # is above 111001 and found that IH-102677 is not available. Any thought where i can get some or a suitable substitute? :bash2:

Don't think a coil pin is going to work here. The button head is held in by the metal clip.

do not know it this helps but for a shear pin on my woods mower deck i use a low grade bolt like a grade 2-3 . on my unit it takes a 1/2x3 bolt and i have been using these for 10 years now without a problem, and yes they will shear off if you push them beyond there limits. as a matter of fact if you have the rpms up and engage the pto to fast just the tourque from starting will take out the 1/2 inch bolt.
i just go to TSC and get there cheapie bolts for shear pins. |
:HeadScratch:
Isn't that a rivet? Looks like it to me - not really a shear bolt?? |
You know what it sure does look like a rivet. Wonder if its aluminum too?

I agree...looks like a steel rivet to me...I have a bunch just like that in my fastener bins.

by looking at the manuel it is a rivet you have there as a shear pin |
That's gotta be fun! Have to re-rivet things together in the middle of the night when your freez'n your *&$ off! Nice design, think the bolt would have been a little better???

You don't have to rivet it. It just pushes in.

The manual bsyphrit posted says it takes a 1/4 x 9/16 oval head rivet... McMaster Carr doesn't appear to have one the exact length, but you might be able to go longer if there are no clearance issues.
http://www.mcmaster.com/#rivets/=8ad0kg I have a bunch of 1/4 x 1" oval head rivets. If you think they will work, I'll throw some in the mail for ya... Jeff (teet) |
Teet, thanks for the offer. I just picked up 30 1/4 x1 round rivets that I am going to cut to size. I have a nice old hardware store down the street that had a ton of them NOS from who knows when. :biggrin2.gif:

No problem! They are probably as old as the ones I have :biggrin2.gif:
Let us know how they work out for you. Jeff (teet) |
