102 not starting

102 not starting. I charged the battery and it started as normal. After about 10 seconds it stalled. Could not get it to start again.
I took off the carburetor and there was fuel in the bowl. I proceeded to take apart that carburetor and cleaned it with carb cleaner then blew air thru it with my air compressor.
I changed the spark plug also.
I drained the gas and added fresh gas.
Went to start it and it still would not start. Then I took off the air cleaner and put some fuel into the carb and it started fine. Ran until the fuel I added was gone.

Not sure what to do next.

My carburetor has writing on it Carter model n

Obviously, you have a Fuel Delivery problem. Did you check your "needle and seat" along with your float ??

:bigthink:

woodbuilderbob 03-26-2021 12:16 PM

I changed all the gaskets and the float needle. All the needles are clean and can see day.light thru them. Still not starting.
I have fuel in the fuel line and fuel in the carb bowl.

What should I check next? I’m not a big engine fixer

See if the fuel is turned on, If it is then you have a blockage in the fuel line or filter.

Or the float is sticking in the closed mode and/or not adjusted properly.
Needs to be nearly parallel to the carb body when held upside down.

Yeah, that was my thinking as well. I just happen to have 2 of them out in the dining room, don't ask. :biggrin2: But anyway, not the best pic, but I took off the bowls and what did I see, Yep the one on the right is right, the left one, not so much. When you turn the carb back the way it mounts on the engine, the float on the left doesn't allow fuel to go in the bowl. It remains in the down position, which is up in the pic. The one on the right allows fuel to go into the carb. But remember, the picture I posted of the carbs are inverted so you have to kind of look at them backwards or process what happens in reverse, if that makes sense. HTH

:GoodLuck: :beerchug:

EDIT: No they weren't on the table. They were on top of a big box that I have under the table that holds the fenders for my 70. :buttrock:

Neither one is adjusted properly in the picture, either that or the needle is missing on the right side one.
They should freely move up and down and stop parallel to the body.
The needle and seat will hold it there when adjusted properly.
The float rising in the body puts upward pressure on the needle forcing it into the seat and shutting off the fuel.

I'm going to recommend some "light" reading:

First is "a short how-to for rebuilding Kohler carbs"
https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...ead.php?t=4376

Second is the "Kohler's Carburetor Reference Manual"
https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...ad.php?t=58326

And lastly is the "Kohler K Series Service Manual"
https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...ead.php?t=4646

I can eliminate any issue with the carburetor. I rebuilt the carburetor, changed the fuel line, changed the spark plug and the spark plug wire.
I can see and smell fuel when I try to start it. I tried spraying starting fluid too but that doesn’t start it.
I took out the spark plug and confirmed I have spark there. I looked at the points and sanded them too. I can see a small spark but not sure if it needs to be stronger.
The engine wants to turn over but just won’t start.

R Bedell 05-26-2021 06:10 PM

Are you saying that the Engine won't roll over as normal ??

:bigthink:

woodbuilderbob 05-26-2021 06:24 PM

It won’t roll over. Just keeps cranking over but not starting

I don't know what you mean.

finsruskw 05-26-2021 09:00 PM

Probably got it flooded.
Can't believe you are still dinking around with this issue yet.

woodbuilderbob 05-26-2021 09:03 PM

Sorry...the engine crank keeps turning but won’t start

Billy-O 05-27-2021 08:31 AM

Let go all the way back to when you first posted.....

You wrote: "Then I took off the air cleaner and put some fuel into the carb and it started fine."

Today, If you do that again, will it start? It it does, then you need to concentrate on a fuel delivery problem like Roland pointed out in the second post! Otherwise, you might have made a bigger mess chasing this no-start problem for the last couple months.

ironman 05-27-2021 09:19 AM

Put a friggin' voltmeter or test light on the positive post of the coil.
Do you have voltage when you turn the key to the on position?
Do you have voltage when you turn the key to the start position?
If the answer to either or both questions is no, persue a keyswitch/electrical problem.
If the answer to both questions is yes, persue a fuel problem.
This ain't the Mars Rover we're workin' on!

RustyShackleford 05-28-2021 11:24 PM

If it won’t even try to start on starting fluid, I would imagine it has to be an ignition problem of some kind, assuming you haven’t been inside the engine recently.

finsruskw 05-29-2021 06:50 AM

Pitch the dam starting fluid!!
Do you have compression when cranking?
I'll bet not.

jbrewer 05-29-2021 08:52 AM

You need gas, air, compression and spark for this to run.

Do you get spark if you lay the plug on the head and crank it?
