New heart for the 784

2 Attachment(s)
Finally pulled the trigger on a brand new engine for the 784 (aka The Viking). With any luck I will be able to start the installation on Sunday.

Wow!

That's one hack of an engine. I'll be interested in watching your work.

That is great. Take us along for the ride.

It's a 23hp Vanguard. I got it from small engine warehouse, it came with the engine mounting plate and driveshaft adapter.

The engine is setup to accept the pro from the old engine.

I'm switching the wiring in the 784 to wiring from a tractor with a magneto, this should hopefully eliminate any wiring issues. I have the wiring diagram for the engine and tractor.

Other than more HP, is there any other reason you went with a 23hp instead of the more direct 18hp replacement?

My lawn has some pretty steep hills and the 782 and the 1440 both bog down when mowing up hill, I also bought a NOS fan assisted bagger setup that I want to run which will put even more strain on the engine. I'm hoping 23hp is enough to run the bagger while mowing uphill and not bog down.

I tried to look up the 784 on the TractorData.com.... I'm surprised it doesn't even list it though I hear of 784 several times. I was trying to find out more about this tractor including what engine was supplied.

What engine are you replacing with this new one?

aagitch 03-25-2021 08:28 PM

Try looking up 782. It's the same thing just doesn't have dual hydraulics.

The 784 is a 782 with dual hydraulics. The engine I'm replacing is the original KT17 series 1.

I also have a 784. Love that tractor.

Hairtrigger 03-26-2021 06:37 PM

784 is a RARE 782?

R Bedell 03-26-2021 07:01 PM

YUP, 784's are rare.

Tim, That's a thing of Beauty. Put it on the coffee table and you
would have a fine work of art to look at, and a real conversation
piece when people come over. :beer2:

Can't wait to see it in the 784 :GoodLuck: :beerchug:

CubDieselFan 07-24-2021 09:30 PM

Can you post a picture of the engine driveshaft adapter?

CubDieselFan 11-08-2021 07:13 PM

Did you ever get this installed?
