Wheel weight question

I just got a set of 35 lb weights and have a question. When I went to put them on, I noticed that there is no space for the valve stem on my tires to fit. So when the weight is bolted on, it will be pushing the stem over. Is this normal? Am I missing something? Will it damage the seal on my valve stem? The weights are for 12 inch wheels (and that's what I have).

_DX3_ 12-28-2010 07:16 PM

I would not think that is normal. Do you have a picture of the weights?

Stitch 12-28-2010 07:17 PM

I will in 5 minutes, stay tuned!

I see that there's an extra notch, but it's not far enough out on the wheel. The weights are Sears brand. Has anyone had this problem before? maybe my valve stems stick out further than they should?

_DX3_ 12-28-2010 07:48 PM

Those look like they are designed for the valve stem to be further back in the wheel and not where the cub valves are. Do they press hard against the valve stem? If so you may not be able to use them. I am sure someone in here has dealt with that style before and will chime in..

It doesn't seem to crush completely, but it leans em over pretty good. I don't think it could damage the tire, but I'd rather not constantly be dealing with leaking valve stems.

gcbailey 12-28-2010 07:56 PM

can you turn the wheel around with the valve stem inside? Will that increase the offest too much?

Matt G. 12-28-2010 08:06 PM

Those really look like they are for 10" wheels on account of the attachment bolt spacing.

Cubcrazy 12-28-2010 08:13 PM

What is the distance between the bolt holes?
Should be around 8-1/2 center to center.

MrGitrdone41 12-28-2010 08:53 PM

i cut the notch out so the stem can go on the outside. See my vid on youtube about it.www.youtube.com/mrgitrdone41/

Stitch 12-28-2010 08:55 PM

I didn't measure, but the bolt's DO line up with the ones on my wheels.

The only thing I can think of is like stated before, the stems were placed differently on the sears tractors.

Says file not found, can you post a pic?

cub123 12-28-2010 10:32 PM

I have a a few sears suburbans :banned: and all of them have the stem on the inside of the rim,so they have no need for a cut out.I also have a set of those weights and they work great! The plastic coated weights for the sears did not get cut outs for the stem until the 80's or so when they moved the stem to the outside.

What are they made of? Can I drill them out?

cub123 12-28-2010 10:50 PM

I think that they are made of some kind of cement, some of the plastic on mine has been pulled off in places, but it has not seemed to bother it yet,the only thing i can think it would do is erode the cement after some time.As for cutting it,the only thing i can think of is a cement drill bit.

I'll have to try it. I'm a contractor and I go through masonry bits like nobodys business as it is. I'll try this and post back for anyone interested.

Thanks!

cub123 12-28-2010 11:03 PM

Glad i could help, hope it works!

Sears tractors have the valve stem on the inside of the wheels.

Stitch 12-29-2010 10:54 PM

I know I can drill the hole, my only question is will this cause the weight to come apart and wind up ruined? Plastic has a tendency to tear over time when you cut through it, and concrete has a tendency to break when you drill it.

Has anyone tried this?

I'd just as soon trade them for different weights then mess them up, but if it's as simple as drilling a couple of holes without much risk of damaging them, then that's what I'll do.

Matt G. 12-30-2010 10:37 AM

I have a set of JD plastic-coated concrete weights, and they plastic is coming apart, and there's loose concrete under that. For all you know, the concrete has already broken underneath the plastic and you'll just have a mess.

Sell those, and buy ones that actually fit.

That's what I'd like to do, but it's not as easy as it seems. There is NOWHERE within 50 miles of me that can order the cub ones, and everything on ebay or craigslist is a million miles away so shipping would be ridiculous. I did put up an ad wanting to trade, so maybe I'll get a bite.

MrGitrdone41 12-30-2010 01:46 PM

u can type in my user name which is the same as this site and then go to my channel. The vid of me putting them on is there.

I haven't a clue why you'd want to buy new ones. It has taken me 6 years or so, but I've collected about 8 pairs of used weights of various brands for 12" wheels. I could have had 3x that amount if I wasn't so cheap. Go to auctions...they show up all the time. More than 90% of my Cub stuff has come from public auctions, and not from ebay, craiglist, etc.

This is really true for just about anything...if you have some patience, you can get excellent deals on most anything at an auction. I rarely buy anything new and save a LOT of money by doing so.

Stitch 12-30-2010 06:46 PM

I don't want new ones, I want some that will work, new or old. I have no time for auctions (unfortunately, cause I love them) and the only used ones I find for sale are a long ways off.
