582 special

I just got this early 1981 582 special with 2b tiller.

Im new to the cubs so is there anything I should look for or check other than the usual (oil change, grease, tuneup) stuff? It runs great and everything works and with 310 hours on the clock im sure it has plenty of life left in it.

Im going to buy a battery and a new set of tru power tires for the rear. It has the original 23-10.5-12 turf tires now. It will only be used for tilling so could I go up to the 26-12-12 tru powers or should I stay with the 23-10.5-12's?

Sweet deal. Nothing better than a freebie. With a tiller no less. BOOYAH:IH Trusted Hand:

If you are using it for tilling, I would stick with the tires you currently have on it. There's no need for lug tires...all the tractor is doing is preventing the tractor from being pushed forward by the tiller.

Go buy a lottery ticket, quick. Looks like it will give lots of service.

miller3980 03-16-2011 08:29 AM

I agree but the tires are shot so i need to buy tires anyway and the lug tires look cool

miller3980 03-16-2011 08:33 AM

first that thing needs a bath. Its in much better shape then the pictures show. The paint is pretty worn but its all straight and complete just covered in bird crap and dirt. The plan is when my son gets older we will restore it together as a father / son project.

Matt G. 03-16-2011 08:42 AM

In that case, stick with the current size...the 26" rears will not fit without raising the fenders, and you'll probably lose tilling depth, too.

:Welcome2:

Great looking 582! Great price too! I have no clue why they would have put a 2X6 on the back cover of the tiller. Only thing I can think of is they tried backing up while tilling and it was bending the cover.:bigthink: It's missing the belt pulley cover but that's pretty common.

Thanks for the pics! I enjoyed them.:beerchug:

The board adds just enough weight to do a better job of leveling the tilled soil, and chances are more than good, that the hour meter has rolled over only once, judging from the wear of the paint in the normal areas.
nice find, you will enjoy her.

I thought about that but it was only used for tilling and has not been used for the last couple years because unfortunately the owner past away. It was my neighbors which he bought new. He past away a couple years ago and his wife just past 2 months ago. The kids gave it to me as a thanks for all the things I did to help their parents since they don't live close. So that comes out to about 10 hours per year which actually sounds about right. As far as the paint wear I think it was used for a storage shelf and work bench the remaining 11 months of the year.

Nice find....gotta love that free stuff! Like most have said in other posts about 582 Specials ..... not too many people seem to like the tranny in them? Never seen one or driven one so I can't say really. Other than that, I haven't heard too many bad things about them. Tiller is pretty much the same as 75% of the ones you see anymore....missing belt cover and rusty, but pretty decent! That board on back still boggles my mind, but oh well, likely just my mind anyway. :bash2:

ol'George 03-16-2011 09:54 AM

As far as the trans, the peerless is not that bad, it is used in a boat load of Garden tractors including the good old green ones.
They do sometimes have a shift gate problem, when they get a whole lot of hours on them.
Back when dirt was new, my son worked @ peerless doing lab testing on that trans,
I don't remembering him saying they were junk like the lighter duty throwaways they built with no bearings OR bushings.

Nice freebie miller3980,
Isn't the first gear in those sorta like a creeper gear?
If it only was covered with a old sheet,it wouldn't have so much sheet on it.
Good luck!!!

Good luck!!!

Not sure about creeper but its super low which seems to be perfect for tilling. 1st also has a lockout plate on it.

And you sure are right about the SHEET :biggrin2:

That's a nice story, do good unto others and it'll come back to you!! Can't wait to see it all cleaned up:beerchug: Sweet tractor and tiller!

Oh ya, Welcome to the best forum around!!!

ACecil 03-16-2011 12:31 PM

Awesome score on your 582 Special!

nickvanorman 03-16-2011 12:51 PM

i don't know why anyone wouldn't like a Peerless transmission. they make a darn good tranny! and there are enough of them out there to get parts for one easily.

red56turbo 03-16-2011 01:16 PM

Nice 582!! I'd clean her up and buff the paint. Looks to be a nice original. Glad you were able to get it. Congrats.

juniors1282 03-16-2011 03:13 PM

Congrats on the 582 special. Looks great with the tiller behind it. Can't wait to see it all cleaned up.

Ok, I'll bite...

I turned a 580 (yellow/white 582 special) into a 582 by installing an IH gear drive rear and clutch. The peerless trans is definitely inferior compared to the IH 3-speed rear. It weights a lot less than an IH rear. To replace the axle seals, you must remove the hubs from each axle, which rust on so tight you wouldn't believe. I don't think they are as strong as the IH rear; I put the rear from this tractor up for sale locally, and someone paid me a lot to ship it to Maryland because his tractor's rearend broke and he couldn't find one locally. The parts must not be as easy to find as you think. I've also seen a lot of other people looking for rearends or parts for the rears. Besides, a REAL tractor doesn't have a belt clutch. If the peerless trans is so great, why isn't everybody using them for tractor pulling like they do with the CC rears?

Mountain Heritage 03-16-2011 07:43 PM

And Matt takes the bait, hook, line, and sinker!! :biggrin2: That's it Matt, don't hold back, let it all out! :ROTF2:

ajgross 03-17-2011 03:12 AM

Well all I have to say is "YOU SUCK"! I need one of those for my red x82 collection and they seem to be had to find and sell for a stupid amount on Ebay. I don't know if the collectors are buying them, or if people think that it's better because it's a "Special". But anyway, congrat's on your new tractor.

AJ

Mountain Heritage 03-17-2011 07:08 AM

You make a good point AJ, how is your collection coming along....its starting to grow pretty good...adding fertilizer to it weekly are you?? I certainly do agree with the collection you have going....sweeeeet!

Matt G. 03-17-2011 08:06 AM

AJ-

Which models haven't you found yet?

juniors1282 03-17-2011 08:17 AM

AJ, I missed one last fall that was nicer than my 582 for $350. Missed it by about 10 mins. He sold it to the first guy who looked at it for $275 . Oh well they'll be others.

miller3980 03-17-2011 11:09 AM

how tough would it be to find a snow blower for this?

Tractor2nv 03-17-2011 11:09 AM

I've had 2 Specials and 3 1100's...got to agree with Matt G on his input,"hook, line and sinker"...1 Special and 1 1100 had rear end issues when I got them. BUT, I had one Special with a tiller and was a outstanding combination! Question? Why was this post moved to the CC/MTD section? Tractor is a early 1981. :bigthink:

ajgross 03-17-2011 03:31 PM

I currently have a IH 482, a IH 582, a IH 682, a IH 782, and a CCC 982. I'm still looking for a 582 Special, a 782D and a 1282. I know where there is a 1282, but I'm too cheap to buy it. I guess it has been sitting outside for a while and he wants $600 for it. Maybe I'll get desperate and buy it one of these days.

AJ
