PTO question
 

Hey guys The PTO on the 782 won't stay on. It will turn on but as soon as you let the switch go to the middle it shut's off. The 1806 had the safty switch on it to shut off the PTO when you put it reverse, I just removed the switch and connected the wires together from it. I changed the PTO switch with one I know is good that didn't help. I changed the safty switch under the seat that didn't work. What next do you think it's the PTO, or should I rewire the backup safty switch and see if that helps. When we did the swap I used everything from the 1806 on the 782 so I'm not sure where else to look.

The simplest thing to do is to bypass everything with a jumper cable and see if the PTO stays engaged. I just had to do that with my starter not engaging when the key was turned. It turned out the little 20 amp fuse had crud on one end and was only allowing 6.5 volts to the solenoid. Hook up a jumper wire to a hot 12 volt source, disconnect the connector in the front at the PTO and hook up the jumper to it. Then with the mower running touch and hold the 12 v source and see if it stays on. If it does then you just work back one element in the circuit at a time until you get to the culprit. On my 1811 I have already found two connectors that had corroded terminals in them but looked fine from the out side. Good luck.

What is the Chassis Serial Number of your tractor...???

If your 782's serial number is below 720000, it'll take a different pto switch than the 1806. If that's not the problem, check the air gap for the pto per the manual. I had the identical problem but it was a bad pto relay for mine but not sure if your's has the relay.

I put the entire motor and harness from an 1806 in the 782 the 1806 number is 762360. If you hold it up it will run all day but as soon as you let it go to the run position it shut's off.

bad switch? Im guessing, but seems like other electrical parts are working.

Changed the switch with a ggod one diddn't help :angry:.

I'm having the same problem and was wondering if you ever had any luck fixing it. I have an 1811 Model#148660100 Serial# 768951 MFG date J127G Any help would be appreciated.

I bought this 782 off of Eric and managed to correct this problem. In order to understand well, you probably need to look at the wiring schematics for the tractor you have and understand how the pto relay works.

In essence, the problem with mine was not with the relay, but with the new wiring harness. I bought a new relay for mine, thinking that would fix the problem, but when it didn't, I started poking around.

The new relay recieves a constant 12 volts from the reverse lockout system. When the tractor is not in reverse, it sends 12 volts to the PTO relay. When you shift into reverse, it cuts out the 12 volts and knocks the PTO.

My relay was not recieving that constant 12 volts. The new relay has a post that is for the reverse lockout circuit, so I took a wire and ran it from the hot wire on the PTO switch to the relay. That fixed the problem. Runs fine. I am not sure if the old PTO relay works in the same fashion. It may be something worth looking at.
