PTO belt
 

I have a 782 w/ 50" deck, does anyone know for sure what size the PTO belt is. The belt guide says that it is a 1/2 X 85 1/2, but when I tried to put one that size it wouldn't go on, any suggestions? It will only keep the belt on for a few minutes before it throws it off, the old belt actually measures nearer to 89". My Cub Lo-Boy is at the dealer with a blown engine (wife ran it low on oil), so I really need my 782 to mow this 5 acres.

Also does anyone have a place to buy a new seat?

882 PTO belt
 

I just put a new pto belt on my 882D. This should be the same as yours. New belt was a 5/8" x 88 1/2" MTD/Cub # 954-3071. This is shown in the manuals as a 754-3071, but MTD changed their numbering system. I was shocked at how worn the old belt was, 1/2" max. New belt fits and runs fine.

Just to let everyone know, the belt I tried to install was a 5/8", and the book calls for a 1/2" X 85 1/2, so I went to Glenns Surplus in Shelby Ohio and got the right belt, installed it and mowed all day with no problems whatsoever. I've owned the tractor for about 9 years, but never really tried to use it much, it has actually been in the barn and not moved for about the last 5 years. When my Lo-Boy 184 spun a rod bearing I knew that I would need something to take care of these 5 acres of mowing, so I pulled her out, dusted it off took care of some maintenance issues and got the belt situation figured out and we are going to mow.
There is a 42" snowblower for sale for 300.00 that will fit my 782, is that a good price? I will probably need wheel weights and chains to make this work right for the winter, does anyone know what I need to do to get the wheel weights? What do I look for in the sales?

That's not supposed to be a 1/2" belt...all 82 series tractors use a 5/8" belt. That is a typo in the book. ChrisA has the right size/number.

$300 is pretty steep for anything other than a NOS or restored thrower in my opinion. I've never paid more than $60 for one...

Thank you Sergeant Major, I returned from Iraq April 18th, I'm a CSM for an Army National Guard Sustainment Brigade. We were one of five Sustainment Brigades in Iraq, our HQ was in the Al Anbar province west of Fallujah, Al Asad Airbase. Our AOR was the entire western section of Iraq from Baghdad west to Jordan south to Saudi and all the way north to Syria, I'm glad to be home and being able to see and mow grass.

Matt G is correct, the 82 series Cub Cadets all used 5/8 inch belts!! That 954-3071 is likely the correct one at 5/8 x 88 1/2 inches. That 1/2" may work for a while, but it rides so deep in the pulleys that as soon as it wears some, it'll begin slipping!...and you get to do it all over again ...guaranteed...

Many 782's used a slightly longer belt - IIRC, the 954-3001 belt at 21/32 x 91 11/16 inches. I have one belt book that calls for the 954-3003A belt but it also says it's only 72 inches long so I know something isn't right with that...gotta figure out the actual length of the 954-3003A.

Myron, I have a brand new 954-3003A belt hanging up in the garage still with the packaging. It says 5/8 x 89 1/2 SL. That belt has been hanging there about 3 yrs now. I'm starting to think it'll be another 3 before i'll need it. They sure are worth the extra $$$
