147 hydrostatic

i have a 147 1969-70 hydrostatic it runs great when it starts but very hard to turn over i had the starter checked they keep saying its fine when i adjust the valves it turns over very easy because of lack of compression build up but will not run how does the auto compression work on this is it on the cam thx

There is a small tab that the exhaust valve will lift from when you are first turning the engine over. This tab is connected to a set of cammed weights with a very small spring to keep it popped up to relieve compression. Once the motor starts running the weights overcome the spring and lowers the tab out of the way of the valve. You will have to pull the head off and turn the flywheel by hand. On the compression stroke you should see the exhaust valve lift slightly. If it does not lift either the tab has broken or the spring has slipped or broken. You can see the spring on the cam if you pull the cam cover from the side of the motor.

something to check

Check your ground connection if it looses up a little it don’t get power enough to start, it may be corroded
